GO BLU WARNER COME TO THE BLU SIDE.
I talked 2 people into PS3's at Best Buy last night. They were looking at the HD DVDs and Blu-Rays, and discussing which format would prevail. I told them that the PS3 was a Blu-Ray player, too; and no matter what the outcome of the "format war' was, at the very least they would have a high end gaming system that would play whatever Blu-Ray's they purchased (even though I told them that I thought Blu-Ray would win, it was the winning caveat.) So, two more PS3 systems being used as Blu-Ray players! They loaded up on a few of the BOGO titles while I was there, and I told them about the other titles going BOGO this week, and they thanked me and said they'd be back to pick up the others going BOGO. I sure wish Sony would promote the PS3 a bit better, as I think that those people "on the fence" and waiting would purchase the PS3 using the reasoning that if Blu did lose (unlikely) they still have a PS3 to play games on. That was my main reasoning for jumping in.

Also, a side note (and I don't know how much this plays into the ratings); Yes, HD DVD has strong sellers in the Bourne releases and Planet Earth (#13 and #21, respectively on the Amazon Top 100), but their next seller is at #94. Going further down, here is what I came up with:

Top 50 - HDDVD -2 / Blu - 1
Top 100 - HDDVD -3 / Blu - 6
Top 200 - HDDVD - 6 / Blu - 14
Top 300 - HDDVD - 9 / Blu - 28
Top 400 - HDDVD - 13 / Blu - 38

This, coupled with the Best Buy and Circuit City BOGOs (not to mention the great deals at other locations such as Fry's and J & R more recently) may help out with next week's ratings. Fingers crossed, anyway. (I realize that the further down the "Top" chain you go, the less amounts that separate, but it's at least something!

I wouldn't be too afraid of this week. We had MANY new PS3 owners in November and increased the Blu-Ray userbase by more than half a million, so we wont lose this week. Believe :P

55:45 for sure. It will be alot closer than normal that's for sure.

But after that, no real huge universal/paramount titles.

Multiplatform titles have typically been a 2-1 or so in favor of BD in sales.

Past that, Bourne is a combo disc. Even some DUDers hate those things. It's a cool movie and all but I'm not convinced it's going to be that earth shattering.

I'd like to see 60:40 thereabouts, preferably higher.

I'm tired of seeing these close weeks. It just shouldn't be.

If I see 55:45 again or some nonsense like that all I can do is respond to it like this:

Enough already. I'm tired of seeing HD-DVD stay alive by scraps and hang on.

Someone please end it already?

Mods,
Couldn't this thread be merged with the main Nielsen's thread?

I agree I tryuly hope Warner Bros goes Blu otherwise both formats will suffer and never really take off. I will believe it when it happens also. There is too much speculation, and expectations that Warner will go blu, but no solid facts yet.

It depends on if Monday is counted. I have heard in the past both ways. And since Amazon does not ship anything until Monday and does not charge until they ship everything from the weekend goes onto Mondays sales.

I have no idea, but I notice that on Amazon I can't find any warning for the HD DVD version of Planet Earth about it not playing in regular DVD players or even DVD players that output HD (but aren't players for the format by the name "HD DVD"):

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...AJW/ref=nosim/

but for the Blu-ray, it says:

Maybe I just don't see the warning for the HD DVD, but assuming I'm not missing it, it is pretty messed up that the version which shouldn't need the warning as much is the one that has it. The HD DVD is very confusing (since people have been sold on DVD players that output HD and others think if they have an HDTV and a DVD player, they must be able to play HD DVDs), so that one definitely should have a warning. The odds of people getting confused and thinking that they can play Blu-ray version in their DVD player is a whole lot lower.

I really don't think we have anything to worry about. It should be somewhere around 60-40 unless Bourne somehow outsells Transformers(which it won't). Pirates will still have strong sales and Harry Potter will outsell the HD DVD versions.
