What studio owns rights to Lost? Is it a BD exclusive due to the given studio or is it also available on HD-DVD?

A wife of one of my colleagues emailed me, and she wanted to know whether she should get her husband the HD DVD version of Planet Earth. She thought it would work on their DVD player. While it's impossible to know how often this happens, it does speak volumes especially when Oprah went out and told all the housewives to go buy planet Earth for the Holidays. I expect there will be a lot of returns early next year on this title.

I explained to her what was going on w/ the format war and to hold off on any version, unless she planned on buying a BD player early in 2008. She responded, "I'm buying Blu-Ray because that's all I hear about. We'll just have to buy a Blu-Ray player soon. BUT NOT A PS3 because my husband works too much and when he's home he needs to spend more time with his little son rather than with the TV." Good new on the BD player and Planet Earth...bad news on the domestic front.

He should just go out and buy his son a PS3 for Christmas

And wouldnt you know it, it plays BD too!!! Thats how I talked my wife into it(not for our son, for myself). If the format dies(which it wont) you still have a killer game system, win win.

Of course we know that some do, but not all people with the PS3 do buy movies. If that were the case, you'd have more titles selling upwards of 500,000 units. But that isn't the case yet
but not every one that has bought an HD DVD player will also buy movies for it. Some where sold to the smarter HD DVD fanboys who realized that a 100$ player with 10 movies is a great price for 10 movies. Others where bought by people buying upgrading DVD players.

how do you know, different stores have different placements for things. Also if someone goes to the store and sees the HD DVD version (even if o a different shelf) do you think it will help them not make a mistake? it might even screw things up even more "oh look, there was none in the normal DVDs but it is here with the other DVDs that are HD, it must be that one.

Not true..it's being kept front and center with them all together at futureshops and BB. Either in standalone displays or still mixed in with new releases/best sellers. It's very popular across the board and is getting front and center promotion because of it. Your just flat out wrong about that in our area.

Don't remember about that particular title but some of the DVD widescreen cases have a similar colour across the top like HD DVD...it's confused me a few times and I actually am aware of it.

People keep saying this but Planet Earth on Blu-Ray outsold HD-DVDs version for basically 6 months running...then Oprah announces it and suddenly Planet Earth takes off to an insane level on HD-DVD.

Frankly I have no doubt that a minimum of 1/3rd of the HD-DVD sales of this title over the last month will be returned, and I think I'm being conservative.

Some people like to claim that if somebody buys an HD DVD player then it means they will buy HD DVDs, but as you basically said, it doesn't mean that. Besides the above, there are those who will just rent (especially Netflix customers). The percentage who will never buy an HD DVD might not be large, but there is definitely that group amongst HD DVD player owners.
