Uhm, the HD DVD camp can hardly blame last weeks sales numbers on BOGOs, since they themselves had one of their first really big BOGOs that week, both on Amazon and BestBuy etc, which even included new titles, so if anything it is very impressive that blu-ray managed a 61:39 week DESPITE huge HD DVD BOGO sales AND their second biggest movie release of the year in Bourne.

I don't recall DV saying that he thought the 190k was correct, but can't swear he didn't since I don't keep up on all his posts.

I need to apologize for a math error though. I said that Sony used a higher multiplier for SM3 than Paramount used for Transformers. Sony's multiplier was actually less. Not a ton less, but less (and quite a bit more than Warner's for 300).

According to Universal, Sony sold 30k Spider-Man 3 discs in the first week - what is the multiplier for that number?

Has WB released official figures for Harry Potter? What's up with Universal asserting anything about Warner-SKU sales figures?!?

Quote:
Universal could only provide data on the Bourne single SKU. But the studio expects the pattern to continue when sales information can be gathered in the next several days for its own HD DVD Bourne trilogy set.

Additionally, notes Universal research, Warner Home Video’s HD DVD release of Order of the Phoenix is edging out the titles’ BD version by a 55-to-45 ratio. Order of the Phoenix also streeted Dec. 11. That claim matches information gathered from Amazon.com sales rankings in recent weeks.
!?!?

What gives? And how does Universal even have the ability to comment on another studio's SKUs???

Spiderman 3 sold 130k in it's first week, including both the single SKU and boxset, Universal chose to only count the single movie SKU, and who knows what timeline they used, i.e. the first couple of days, first week etc.

They also claim Bourne 3 was available as a boxset, so would generate more sales on top of the 60k single movie SKU, which it isn't, so more spin.

Strange Universal chose to compare Bourne 3 with Spiderman 3, which was also available in a boxset with previously unreleased prequals, rather than POTC 3 which sold 160k alone the week before.

I think we should buy it anyway while we want the #'s to be strong for Blu and fix it after the fact so we still see the stronger Blu #'s.
You buy it then. I'm not buying a faulty product and many others won't either. It's naive to assume this had no impact. I think you have no point here at all.

Hmmm.... that article in video business is full of flaws and general rhetoric that we come to expect from HD DVD PRG - the first flaw is with the statement:

"In its first week on sale, starting Dec. 11, the Bourne single-disc HD DVD configuration sold 60,000 units, doubling the 30,000 units Spider-Man 3 sold during its street week in its similar individual Blu-ray SKU."

Now this is inaccurate as the total numbers for Spiderman 3 and the Box Set is 130,000 - which means that the box set sold 100,000 - FUD - the neilsen videoscan numbers say that Spiderman box set sold about 70% of Spiderman 3

The article then goes on to say:

"Counting other configurations, including its BD trilogy, Spider-Man 3 reached higher six-day numbers, according to distributor Sony Pictures Home Entertainment."

Where do these guys get there data from - a dumpster?

Then it goes on to talk about the Bourne Box set - which was only on amazon and not an official box set.

Then they talk about higher amazon rankings.

Then blaming the Blu-ray BOGO offers for sweking the data

Then this:

“I think the fourth quarter is going to be interesting,” said Graffeo. “If you break out the hits, I think we will be even. But the aggressive discounting, with catalog [of buy one, get one free offers], can inflate the numbers.”

Then finally if you haven't thrown up from the spin comes the kicker:

“This is a real testament to the momentum we are gaining with the set-top players,” said Graffeo. “We are beginning to realize the attach rate with movie sales.”

Seems like Graffeo has been surfing the AVS boards for inspiration, all in all it's alarming that video business would publish this crap, but its the same crap we've been hearing for the last year.

When are the official numbers being released? I thought it was supposed to be on Saturday (yesterday) and I'm still waiting to officially confirm Blu's victory. Will it be released today?

Default "Crush" is probably a strong word.

This is a flagship title for both formats, so expect that we sold more Blu, but not by the 65:35 margins we are used to seeing.

Something that has piqued my interest about the Video Business article...

If you read the comments, one was posted yesterday (Dec 22) that states...

"We're believing Universal's numbers for a Warner release?!? Universal has already been found to grossly inflate their numbers; when Neilsen comes out we'll see that the Blu-ray Harry Potter has handily outpaced the HD-DVD version."

The poster uses the ID "Talkstr8t". Is this the same Talkstr8t as our Blu-ray and AVS insider?

His email is posted there. Email him and ask. I'd say it was the same guy that posts here and AVS.

A couple of posts above his someone commented:

"Nielson numbers have already been released for this week. It's 61-39 for Bluray with HP5 selling 1.2:1 better on Blu-ray and the boxset seliing 1.3:1 better. Quite sade to see how HD-DVD are desperately trying to spin any figures they can lay their hands on. As for the comments from HD-DVD owners below, what more needs to be said, rather than reasoned, articulate pro HD-DVD responses, we see childish fanboy rants."

Where is he getting these numbers I wonder?

I have done by bit by ordering Harry potter gift set on BLU from amazon. I hope they don't mix up HD-DVD's into my BLU set.

The firm numbers have not been posted anywhere as far as I can see, most people are saying Wed 26th. I have read some post of "leak" numbers but nothing that points to one title or another. I think we will win the week overall but as far as Potter goes that may be to closer then we like, I hope not.

Did anyone else see in the Video Business story, some of the posts from dealers? They are very pissed off at the headline and story, and there's quite an interesting first post (very long one, was the first one posted) which is awesome reading, by Bob Johnson a video retailer...

I thought Dave Vaughn had said that Sony's SP3 numbers were inflated?

DUD should be very proud of 1.3 to 1 that is likely their best ratio yet.
