To the people who are actually worrying about this week's sales, and specifically Harry Potter 1-4 on BOGO on Amazon, as I posted on HDD....
"Well, if HD DVD couldn't break 40% in a week when their 2nd "biggest" release (and IMO, best) was on a BOGO at the biggest (by far)seller of HDM......all the Red wetdreams about this week's Amazon BOGO and the HP titles will remain just that; a sticky mess ![]() |

Look the bottom line is this, Blu-Players stand alone and PS3 (yes people do know ps3 play blu-rays) out sold hd dvd players by a huge margin over the holidays. Blu software continues to out sell red by at least x2. Picking hd dvd will not give red the victory it will instead divide the studios 50/50. Warners and all the others know that DVD sale will continue to fall and they're next big thing is next generation players. We all know j6p will not buy a player until there is a clear cut winner so I can't believe the decision hasn't already been made. They have probably picked blu already just trying to get some "incentives" from blu before announcement.

Honestly, I don't think the numbers mean a hill of beans @ this point. IMO, the sales numbers have already spoken, I think WB is going to dump HD DVD prior to CES. They pushed "The Invasion" back, which is indicative of something odd going on. The numbers have been pushing 2:1 all year long, and BD still has the massive lead on weeks with high volume.
The disparity in the number of discs sold has to be getting huge now. WB going HD DVD would, in my mind, be the most anti consumer move of a company in a long time. I could be wrong, but I think we got this one in the bag folks. Even if HD DVD pulls a BS win next week, it's not going to mean a damn thing. |

Why not? Most places had pathetically small stock on it - IF AT ALL. Best Buy isn't even carrying the ultimate edition. So people that wanted it, didn't buy it, had to look for it online/elsewhere and even there it's often out of stock during the first week. There simply weren't a lot of copies in the channel.

Dave Vaughn has been kind enough to give us the numbers early and it's been 61:39 for the last two weeks. Identical ratios. |

I agree. I mean they have nearly 18 months of sales data; what's one more month of data going to prove?

IMO, it's a move of desperation. They have to be putting a lot of marketing money behind this, to try to eek one out right before CES. However, as has been stated in this thread, I think its a moot point. BD won the year, and won it in convincing fashion. |

i just want to throw in my 2 cents about the Potter BOGO.
The week that the PS3 took its first price drop, amazon bundled Resident Evil with the PS3. On Amazon, RE climbed to #2 overall on the DVD charts. with all the PS3s sold that week out of Amazon, Resident Evil only managed a #10 on the nielsen charts. so #2 on amazon will get you roughly #10 on the nielsens. whereas open season when bundled with the ps3 at best buy made #2 on the nielsens for the week. as you can see best buy sells significantly more hdm than amazon. now the timing of this sale is a factor on how potter will effect the numbers next week. what do people redeem in Q5 (after xmax). GIFT CARDS! You don't get a gift card to amazon usually, you get them to best buy, circuit city, fry's, target, wal-mart, etc. this time of year internet purchases go down and B&M purchases go up. Therefore, amazon is at its low point of the year, so maybe #1 isn't so special after all, in fact id argue that HP @ #1 right now is selling less than RE @ #2 back last summer. I think we estimated, (id have to look at the numbers again) that RE sold about 10k copies the week it was at #10 on the nielsens. so im estimating that all the potters combined will do about 40k all together at the worst from amazon. Now Id like to point out that the majority of the Potter purchases are most likely from Amazon this week, as you would have to be a fool to buy them anywhere else right now (but some people don't check the internet) so just to be nice we will add another 10k to the amazon total. Lets also say that OOTP and the Box Set combined to another 10k. That puts all the SKUs at a total of 60k. Now lets factor in blu-ray sales for total SKUs and just be really nice to the reds say that they beat us 2:1 with Potter and blu-ray SKUs only did 30k combined. So with all that money put into that BOGO they only managed to sell 30k more at best than us. Now like I said, this time of year B&M sells mucho, while internet sales go down. Also, pointed out earlier was how much more Best Buy sells than Amazon. It has been shown time and time again that blu-ray does better in B&M than on the internet. Also, SAL blu-ray players are moving like mad in B&M right now from everything I SEE and hear. So what is moving a lot more at the bigger, more important retailer? blu-ray is. what is moving a lot better at other big retailers like Circuit City, Fry's, Hastings, Target, Wal-mart (year they aren' in the numbers, but they are important) that could very well take over amazon as the #2 dealer of HDM because of the time of year it is? blu-ray is. what is less likely to sell at these retailers, because of a massive online, desperate BOGO that is offering some terrific prices? HD DVD is. When you put it in perspective this BOGO is not going to tip the numbers for the week in favor of red. maybe slightly skew them, but nothing to worry about. 30k more of potter is not signifcant at all when blu-ray normally outsells hd dvd by at leas 100k a week. yeah, itll eat into it a bit, but blu has lots of padding. 58:42 blu-ray wins this week. a 16% losing gap after all that money UNIVERSAL wasted to save face will make them think twice before opening their yappers again and trying/wasting money to promote hd dvd through BOGOs. its going to be embarrassing too, doing all that and still losing has to make them feel like idiots. |

i also want to throw in the fact that a lot of you doubting blu-ray owners who think hd dvd will win a week and that could influence a WB decision need to realize that the us isn't the only country in the world where blu-ray is sold. Even if HD DVD managed to squeak out a 52:48 win here, globally for the week they probably lost 66:34. WB is not just going to evaluate 1 country when they evaluate their options on whose side to take. Surely they don't want to shut themselves out of Japan, Australia and the majority of Europe.

Yes, in favor of Blu of course. Regarding this week, regardless of the sales for the HD-DUD side, I am not too worried. The only time we had to worry was with Transformers week and they didn't win that either so I am not wasting my time with such nonsense. Blu wrapped this up for the whole year and that is what WB is going to see.
