Hey, uh, has anybody here stopped to consider that now that the war is won, it's time to start focusing on the real battle?

I'm talking about Blu-ray vs. DVD!

(OK, now five or six people need to post that they can't wait to see that, too. Then someone needs to post that the numbers will initially seem overwhelming. Then we can discuss what that means and how it will change for another 5-10 posts. Then a little BD vs. HD DVD discussion, then start over again with a new post about "the real war" vs. DVD. Come on, we should be at 1000 pages in no time!)

After this week, I think we will begin to see some real movement in that statistic. I am betting that the week of March 11th will move it more than one percentage point.

Can anyone imagine what the figures will be like once Warner stock is all gone, and they aren't releasing any more titles? The figures we are seeing now are still including Warner HDDVD sales.

It won't go that long. Toshiba is caving, nobody will be cranking out HD DVDs in any quantity in May.

wow 81:19 with bogos and sales on Amazon. That is way better then I expected. I guess most of the HD DVD buyers already own too many copies of the same movie.

Guys, no fights. The numbers/ratios we get are from HMM. They will decide how long they feel like publishing those numbers and if or when they feel like comparing BD to DVD. None of us have any say. If they want to show BD-HD DVD until HD DVD is regularly below 1% or they decide that they never want BD vs DVD or that they will replace HD DVD by DVD at the beginning of next month, it is 100% up to them. All we can do (as individuals) is decide if we want to discuss the numbers they publish.

There were questions a while back in this thread (above was one post) about HiDef vs DVD sales since inception.

FYI, here's a new article that includes some data about DVD sales for the 1st two years:

High-def discs, introduced in 2006, sold 8.3 million units by the end of 2007. That compares to 16.3 million units for standard-definition in their first two years at retail, according to Adams. No such gap exists in hardware, where high-def DVD players are on about the same sales pace as were standard DVD set-tops. Due to holiday retail price wars, high-def set-tops even spiked well above standard DVD players in the last weeks of 2007.

As a Blu-ray Vs. HD DVD thread then no, not for much longer. Hopefully the numbers will still be reported until HD DVD goes below 1%..

The next big challenge is to take on DVD and we will probably need a new thread to monitor that.

Anecdotal reports suggest that Blu-ray sales are accelerating very well, so it would not be unrealistic to expect HMM to start recording Blu-ray Vs. HD DVD sales in some form (a pie chart would look silly at this stage).

But for now, let's enjoy the moment of victory!

Yeah, but I'd start with the week of March 11, when we have titles that are releases that have been on DVD for years but are first-timers to Blu. That way, we can see how they sell vs their DVD counterparts that same week. (That's if they are releasing DVD and Blu versions of those films like ID4; I, Robot; Gattaca; and Dogma that same week.)

I agree..HD is dead..lets start comparing to DVD. I have a feeling though it will be depressing to look at for a while to come. Adoption will be slow since everyone will need HDTVs with a player.
