With just a few minutes to spare this evening, I discovered that the show On Story on (PBS) World was showing an episode titled "The Neo Noir". I set it to record, but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

I'm sure it'll be a rather superficial affair (it's only a half-hour program) but I thought I'd mention it so that if anyone else here wanted to look for a repeat airing on their cable/sat system...

What a great deal for 5 Blus. I locked it in and in the meantime will continue to monitor the U.S. listing as well to see if it goes any lower. I only have one of these films, WITNESS TO MURDER, which I'm sure I can easily sell to help cover the cost of the set. Thanks MifuneFan, for the price alert. With all the fantastic recent deals at Amazon.ca on complete TV series DVD sets and now SORCERER on Blu, the great white north has really been bringing it so far this year!

What do y'all think about the possible inclusion of Alfred Hitchcock's I Confess to the film noir queue here?

I revisited I Confess last night, by way of the new Warner Archive Blu-ray, and found it to be one of Hitchcock's most noir, or at least "noir-stained", works.

I definitely believe it's a Noir film,B&W cinematography, a murder, an innocent man accused, etc. In fact, it's mentioned in the Film Noir Encyclopedia as a "devout noir".

I usually don't get into the subjective discussion of what constitutes noir, but I can't resist commenting this time.

Not pointing at you in particular, Phil, but I don't understand why "B&W" is considered a criterion. Sure, most noirs are B&W, but most films during the entire classic noir period are B&W. Color films were rare. Some noirs are in color (e.g. Leave Her to Heaven), and most non-noirs are B&W (e.g. Arsenic and Old Lace).

I do agree that I Confess is a noir, as well as many other Hitchcock films...

Color Noirs, especially in the 40s and 50s are the exception, not the rule.

Leave Her to Heaven and Niagara are the only ones prior to 1960 which readily come to mind...

As a drama, it's good stuff, and the German release looks great, so if you're interested in it, I recommend picking it up.
Looks like Kino are releasing Deadline U.S.A. later this year

Inferno, Black Widow, and The Trap would qualify as well.

Yeah, B&W Noirs are a personal preference for me. I just love the way B&W cinematography creates the atmosphere/mood for these films. I do have Leave Her To Heaven and I love it, but I'm less inclined to purchase Violent Saturday or House of Bamboo at the moment.

Another color noir pre-1960: SLIGHTLY SCARLET.

Back to B&W: it looks possible that M (1951) will be released in BD by a US label later this year.

There is no Canadian "version" for any Kino film.

These are the exact same product as sold in the U.S..
