I noticed Gun Crazy has gone down to €40.99. It was around 60 euro for awhile. Contemplating about buying it since it also has the Eddie Muller book, but in French. It's region-free as well.

That's awesome as that means another movie will be removed from my list. That means only 19 more to go.

This may have already been covered, but I got a notice about Suddenly starring Frank Sinatra getting a release in late October. But I'm not sure if it a new packaging of the Image Entertainment release from 2012.

Quote:
The Film Detective Proudly Presents
Suddenly

Film Noir Thriller Transferred From Original 35mm Film Elements
Shooting Onto Blu-ray Oct. 25th

ROCKPORT, Mass. — Oct. 1, 2016 — For Immediate Release — Frank Sinatra is unforgettable as a psychotic war veteran hell bent on assassinating the president in the 1954 classic Suddenly – digitally restored from 35mm archival film elements, as it’s never been seen before – available on Blu-ray Oct. 25 from The Film Detective (distributed by Allied Vaughn).

It’s not every day the president comes to town … When he makes a stop in sleepy Suddenly, Calif., things liven up after a possible assassination attempt comes to light.

In a house atop a hill overlooking the train station where the president will arrive, three gangsters, led by John Baron (Frank Sinatra, From Here to Eternity, The Manchurian Candidate, On the Town), have taken hostages Pop Benson (James Gleason, The Night of the Hunter, Arsenic and Old Lace, Meet John Doe), his daughter Ellen (Nancy Gates, Some Came Running, World Without End) and her son Peter III, a.k.a. “Pidge” (Kim Charney, The Werewolf, Man From God’s Country).

Local sheriff Tod Shaw (Sterling Hayden, The Godfather, Dr. Strangelove, The Asphalt Jungle) and Secret Service agent Dan Carney (Willis Bouchey, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Big Heat, Pickup on South Street) are pitted against Baron, who’s determined not to let anyone stand in his way.

Baron is good with a gun and has the perfect vantage point, all he has to do is keep a cool head … But can he? This cold-blooded thriller from director Lewis Allen (The Uninvited) feels as savage as it did decades ago when the New York Times called Sinatra’s performance, “a melodramatic tour de force.”

Restored in HD from the original 35mm film elements to showcase the stunning film grain, Suddenly is presented in full screen with the original aspect ratio of 4 x 3 (1:75) and original soundtrack restored in DTS-HD.

People may be interested in Philip Kerr's "Berlin Noir" novels. An LA Times review mentions that the novels' protagonist, Bernie Gunther, has "the spirit of Raymond Chandler's knight-errant, Philip Marlowe."

Thought someone in the Los Angeles area might find this of interest so I figured I would pass it along:

Union Station Will Host Free Screenings Of Film Noir Classics

Metro Art and the Film Noir Foundation are joining forces to present three classic film screenings at Union Station. The hook is that at least a portion of each film was shot inside the building.

October 7, 8 p.m.: Union Station (1950)
November 4, 8 p.m.: Criss Cross (1949)
December 2, 8 p.m.: Too Late For Tears (1949)

The Film Noir at Union Stations screenings take place in the ticketing hall and are free, with seating first-come, first-served.

I've read the "Berlin Noir" trilogy, and found them very much worth reading. Still haven't gotten around to any of Kerr's "post-war" Bernie Gunther novels, though.

Deep Discount are having a 15% off site wide sale right now, and there's plenty of good noir deals to be had.

They have Kino's Dark Side of Cinema Box set (5-films) for just $27.28 after discount. Apply code FALL15

Just reading my copy of that book. I must say it's a very entertaining book in that it focuses on what was said about these films at the time of their release.

What we now consider masterpieces of the genre were not always thought of in glowing terms.

It really gave me a whole new outlook on how these films were perceived by critics, gossip columnists and even theater operators. The photographic reproductions are the best I've ever seen in a book on Noir.

Highly recommended.

As an aside, I started looking up the theaters mentioned in the text. Amazingly some are still operational. Most are closed, but some of the buildings remain. Man, those towns are small.

Kino have announced plans to release The Scar, aka Hollow Triumph (1948). The Film Detective actually put out a release of this last September, but I'm sure this will trump that one.

The Scar (Hollow Triumph) is an exemplary film noir, and I will gladly double-dip.

Watched Dark Passage for the first time as it popped up as free to view with Amazon Prime. Whoa! Really enjoyed it. I'm still very new to "classic" noir but this is an essential purchase on BD - especially as I've heard rumours that a WB Archive Collection sale is imminent.

Funnily enough, I didn't watch it because it is a noir, but because it is set in San Francisco. I've been on a run of films set in that city, the topography and architecture of which of lend themselves to some great scenes and cinematography.

S.F. is definitely one of the best cities for a film's locale. Some really memorable ones off the top of my head include Bulitt, Invasion of the Body Snatchers ('78), Dirty Harry franchise, Vertigo, Point Blank, The Maltese Falcon, and Zodiac.
