It's been a busy week for film noir fans! Cohen Media Group (via Kino distribution) will be releasing a double-feature of British Noir titles on April 27th.

Double feature of two fully-restored film noir classics!

Cast a Dark Shadow (1955) and Wanted for Murder (1946)

Cast a Dark Shadow
Directed by Lewis Gilbert
Screenplay by John Cresswell
Starring Dirk Bogarde, Margaret Lockwood, and Kay Walsh
----
Wanted for Murder
Directed by Lawrence Huntington
Screenplay by Emeric Pressburger, Rodney Ackland, Maurice Cowan
Starring Eric Portman, Dulcie Gray, Derek Farr

Death and seduction are the themes of these newly-restored thrillers from the golden age of British noir. In Cast a Dark Shadow, Dirk Bogarde (The Servant, The Damned) stars as “Teddy” Bare, a smooth-talking cad who maintains a life of leisure by preying on a series of lonely, wealthy women. But the headstrong sister (Kay Walsh) of one of his late wives is determined to bring Teddy’s killing streak to an end. In Wanted for Murder, the polished exterior of a refined gentleman (Eric Portman) conceals the heart of a strangler. A young record shop clerk (Dulcie Gray) holds the key to his capture, which puts her at the head of the queue to become his next victim.

Special features:
*Optional English SDH subtitles
*Trailers

How are the films in this new set?
I have the firts set and enjoyed it.
The second set just shipped.
I fear they may start scrapping the barrel soon.

I've seen Johnny O'Clock, The Dark Past, and The Sniper. The Sniper is definitely above average. The Dark Past, I'm slightly prejudiced against the outdated psychological angle, but it's good otherwise, and that's more of a personal prejudice. I didn't care much for Johnny O'Clock, but think I might appreciate it more on a rewatch.

I pretty much agree with your views on these 3. However, I’m looking forward to revisiting Johnny O’Clock— perhaps on a second viewing I will appreciate it more. I thought it was solid but until now hadn’t had the itch to take another look at it.

I’ve also seen City of Fear and it’s pretty decent. I believe it features a very early Jerry Goldsmith score, which may be a highlight. Also looking forward to revisiting.

The other two I haven’t seen but look forward to.

Big news just dropped in the Kino thread. We're getting our first classic film noir in 4K. Touch of Evil (1958) is getting a UHD release soon.

Same here. It's cool that it's coming out but I can't upgrade every title I get and like, especially when I got them so recently on prices that weren't cheap at all. Also, the key point for me is that I "liked" this movie NOT loved. So, I'll hold onto the Eureka copy.

I noticed this. Also, the three Shout Select releases starring Veronica Lake are eligible.

I'm delving more into noir, but I'm all geared up for the next Criterion Flash Sale, and hoping for WAC and KL events, too - which means a reluctant pass on these offers this time around. But definitely great deals that I hope Amazon will have again.

Columbia University's Kit Noir Film Festival will be virtual this year (albeit truncated), and completely free of charge to stream. The theme this year is called "Border Incidents: The US-Mexico Border in Film Noir"

Quote:
MARCH 11–21, 2021

The Dr. Saul and Dorothy Kit Film Noir Festival

Border Incidents: The US-Mexico Border in Film Noir
Programmed by Rob King, Film & Media Studies
Managed by Soheil Rezayazdi, Columbia Film

The abridged, virtual 2021 Dr. Saul and Dorothy Kit Film Noir Festival presents three films set at the US-Mexico border: Anthony Mann’s Border Incident (1949), John Farrow’s Where Danger Lives (1950), and Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil (1958). All films will stream free of charge between March 11-21, 2021.

The border has long been both a third rail in American politics and a recurrent setting in crime fiction. It is a place where goods entering the US can become “contraband” and the citizens of neighboring states “undocumented immigrants.” Yet the border is also a zone where domestic crime seeks its own escape, evading the arm of US law to find safe haven. The border has in this way functioned in American popular culture as a shadow zone where categories of legality and illegality are constructed and reconstructed; a place, one might imagine, ripe for noir.

This virtual festival will culminate with a roundtable discussion with scholars and activists, including Jonathan Ryan (RAICES), Jonathan Auerbach (University of Maryland), Margarita de Orellana (Artes de México), and Homi Bhabha (Harvard University). Click here to read our in-depth festival introduction.

This festival is funded by a generous gift from alumnus Gordon Kit ’76 (Columbia College), in honor of his parents.

What a year for noir on Blu-ray with Nightmare Alley, Indicator's Columbia Noir sets, WAC doing Crossfire, Kino with The Suspect, So Evil My Love and The Web, let alone Kino's 4KUHD of Touch Of Evil!
