Interesting interview with Eddie Muller, where he names his 10 favorite "B" noirs. (Of the few I've seen, I can easily recommend The Stranger on the Third Floor, The Seventh Victim, and Decoy.) He says that 2 titles on the list -- High Tide and The Guilty -- will be coming out on Blu-ray.

He also mentions that the Film Noir Foundation's latest restoration is The Argyle Secrets from 1948. No word, however, on when or how it will be released.

FNF annoyingly insists on continuing to work with Flicker Alley, so if this is to be a Flicker Alley release it is no surprise that when or if Argyle Secrets ever sees the light of day is hazy at best. FNF should stick with Arrow, much better availability and pricing.

Severin will be releasing "Franco Noir" on October 26th. This is a two-film featuring Jess Franco's iterations of film noir. From everything I'm reading, Franco did a pretty solid job capturing the aesthetics of noir here, especially with Rififi in the City (Rififí en la ciudad) (1963), which is the film that Orson Welles watched, and then hired Franco as second-unit director for Chimes at Midnight.

Quote:
Following his international breakthrough with THE AWFUL DR. ORLOFF, director Jess Franco next delivered a startling pair of crime-thrillers that pistol-whipped European notions of film noir while lighting the fuse on Uncle Jess' own insane aesthetic. Set in New Orleans and based on a novel by the authors of VERTIGO, DEATH WHISTLES THE BLUES is a hard-boiled tale of betrayal, violence and revenge featuring smoky jazz compositions by Franco himself. Jean Servais of RIFIFI fame stars in RIFIFI IN THE CITY, a nihilistic trip through a pulp underworld of thugs, snitches, nightclub dames and black-gloved giallo-style murders. Both films - which led an impressed Orson Welles to hire Franco as his assistant on CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT - now feature HD scans from the original negatives for the first time ever.

Before going on auto pilot, Franco was an interesting director and did some films that are both kind of cool and unique. For me there is a big drop off around the time of SUCCUBUS and from that point on there's not a lot I've liked. I know he has a cult following and I tried to invest in that some years ago, but I found myself becoming very selective with his work after 1968. Maybe because SUCCUBUS had worldwide notoriety he started getting more robotic in his approach and execution. I don't know, but in any case, these two noir titles fall in the sweet spot of Franco for me so I will definitely pick them up.

Loretta Young (The Stranger, The Farmer’s Daughter) and Robert Cummings (The Bride Wore Boots, Dial M for Murder) star in the film noir classic The Accused, a story about one woman’s successful self-defense during a struggle which leads to the death of her attacker. Psychology professor Wilma Tuttle (Young) allows a male student of hers to drive her home. While en route, he attempts to rape her but is killed when his teacher fights back. After fleeing the scene, Wilma is overcome with feelings of guilt while following the murder investigation by Homicide Lt. Dorgan (Wendell Corey, I Walk Alone, Rear Window) and comforting her love interest Warren Ford (Cummings), who also happens to be her attacker’s guardian. Directed by William Dieterle (I’ll Be Seeing You, Portrait of Jennie) and shot by Milton R. Krasner (All About Eve, Love with the Proper Stranger), this brilliantly acted drama dives into the psyche of a woman torn apart by emotional violence.

Albert Dekker (Dr. Cyclops), Susan Hayward (Back Street), Harry Carey (The Shepherd of the Hills) and Frances Farmer (Come and Get It) star in this gripping cinematic blend of noir thrills and Southern Gothic chills. Paul Raden (Dekker) is a hopeless maniac. Twenty-five years ago, he suffered permanent brain damage trying to defend his mother from his brutal father. Paul’s last memory, before descending into the shadows of insanity, was his mother’s agonized scream. Locked away in secrecy ever since, he escapes from his prison on the night of his father’s funeral and stalks among the living. It’s up to Paul’s identical twin John (also Dekker) to put a stop to his brother’s vicious spree. Stuart Heisler (The Glass Key, Blue Skies) directed this eerie film noir with expressionistic black-and-white photography by Theodor Sparkuhl (Beau Geste, Wake Island) that perfectly complements its dark story of madness and murder.

For one of his last Hollywood assignments, film noir master Robert Siodmak, director of The Suspect, The Spiral Staircase, The Killers, Cry of the City and Criss Cross, ventured to Italy—with legendary cinematographer William H. Daniels (The Naked City) and a script by writer/producer Robert Buckner (Bright Victory)—to film this gangster drama inspired by the deportation of real-life Mafia kingpin Lucky Luciano. Jeff Chandler (Man in the Shadow) plays Vic Smith, an American “undesirable citizen” who is shipped back to his native country of Italy. There, he gets wrapped up in a black-market ring and a romance with a beautiful widow, the virtuous Countess Christine di Lorenzi (Märta Torén, Spy Hunt), who may help put an end to Vic’s immoral ways. This riveting crime story has been one of the hardest to find of Siodmak’s American films—until now! The wonderful supporting cast includes Claude Dauphin (The Quiet American), Marina Berti (Prince of Foxes) and Richard Rober (Jet Pilot).

Initial details of the set

Quote:
Coming December 14th on Blu-ray!
FILM NOIR: THE DARK SIDE OF CINEMA VOLUME 5
This collection features three film noir classics. BECAUSE OF YOU (1952) – Blonde bombshell Christine Carroll (Loretta Young) finds out too late that her fiancé is a gangster—and she’s his unwitting accessory. Emerging from prison with dark hair and an interest in nursing, she becomes a nurse’s aide in a war hospital and soon marries a battle-fatigued patient, Steve Kimberly (Jeff Chandler). Directed by Joseph Pevney (Six Bridges to Cross). OUTSIDE THE LAW (1956) – Ex-con Johnny Salvo (Ray Danton) is given the chance to redeem himself, and revenge the murder of an old Army buddy, by going undercover and helping the authorities break up a ring of international counterfeiters who will stop at nothing, including murder, to protect their operation. Directed by Jack Arnold (Man in the Shadow). THE MIDNIGHT STORY (1957) – When beloved priest Father Tomasino is murdered in a San Francisco alleyway, traffic cop Joe Martini (Tony Curtis) vows to catch the killer. Ordered off the case by homicide detective Kilrain (Ted de Corsia, The Killing), Martini turns in his badge and investigates alone. Directed by Joseph Peveny (Female on the Beach).
Bonus features to be announced soon!

Bumping this a few months later in case anyone missed it.

I watched this last night and thought it was terrific. Understands and appreciates the detective genre enough to effectively satirize and subvert it... but not at the expense of being a damn good detective film on its own.

Certainly one of the best noir-ish films in recent years.

Added a few noir titles to the list that either recently came out in Australia, or are coming soon.

First up, Umbrella Entertainment will be releasing a Bogart double-feature on October 6th which will include Tokyo Joe (1949) and Knock on Any Door(1949). Both were previously released on BD in France.

Also from Umbrella comes a Boxing double-feature that came out September 1st, and includes The Harder They Fall (1956). According to member Davidian, this is a region free release. The film was previously released on BD in France

And finally The Face Behind the Mask (1941) which comes from Imprint (Via Vision).
