Good news, ClassicFlix will be officially reissuing Raw Deal (1948) on July 26th, and it will be a Special Edition again, same as the previous release, and not a barebones edition as CF was considering. The new release is limited to 1,000 copies.

Quote:
NOTE: THIS SPECIAL EDITION IS LIMITED TO 1,000 COPIES.

BONUS FEATURES:
  • Feature length audio commentary by author and film historian Jeremy Arnold
  • Deadly is the Male: The Making of Raw Deal - A Featurette with writer and film historian Julie Kirgo, film historian & director Courtney Joyner and biographer & producer Alan K. Rode
  • Dennis O’Keefe: An Extraordinary Ordinary Guy - A featurette with Jim O’Keefe (son of Dennis O’Keefe) and biographer & producer Alan K. Rode & film historian & director Courtney Joyner
  • An image gallery with rare stills, posters and other promotional material
  • Restoration Comparison
  • Trailers
  • PLUS: A 24 page booklet with an essay by author Max Alvarez (The Crime Films of Anthony Mann) featuring stills, posters and other production material

I hope Raw Deal sells well for them, but I wonder how many were in the same boat I was regarding the Alton releases: couldn't get all of them as individual discs, so I got the Collection instead, and now have no reason to get this re-release.

Also, they're printing 5,000 more copies? Didn't they have troubles selling the 2,000 or so they made in their initial batch? Either way, it's a great film and great disc, so I hope it sells well too

We'll clarify in our post about it soon at CF soon, but we pressed 2,500 units initially in 2018 and will press another 1,000 for this re-release. We may re-press more down the line, but it will never go more than 5,000 units in total.

They made 2,500 of them. Took about 4 years or so to sell out, but eventually it did. I'm sure this reissue will probably never sell out, but at least people don't have to worry, and scramble to buy a copy ASAP. It's possible the 5,000 number is incorrect too as it hasn't been formally announced yet, and CF's blogpost about bringing it back had said they were only planning to bring back 500-1,000 copies.

Will Raw Deal be region free? Can't see any indication regards region coding. I'd import it if I thought I could play it.

No, that release was barebones. This is the same as the individual Special Edition release, which includes several extras.

I've got the John Alton 3 movie collection and I'm fine with that. I don't always get around to 'extras' on most movies anyways (though some would have been nice on The Little Rascals releases ). That being said, this is still good news for people who want Raw Deal and were not able to get it before.

Darn it, well thanks for the confirmation. I do find it frustrating with older, niche releases like this on both sides of the pond, being region-locked when there's never really going to be a local alternative.

Kino will be releasing the 1951 version of NATIVE SON in July, starring its author, Richard Wright.

Which particular volumes of the various film noir box set series (Essential Film Noir, Film Noir: Dark Side of Cinema, Columbia Noir) do you recommend ?

All!

Essential Noir 1, Columbia Noir 1-3 and Four Film Noir Classics (by Arrow) are pretty great There is some overlap however with Essential Noir by Imprint and the first two Columbia Noir sets.

However, pretty much every noir set, be it the Dark Side of Cinema (some of them are barely noir, but most are solid films), The Noir Archive sets, the 2nd Essential and 4th Columbian Noir set, Olive's Film Noir Collection, they're all valuable and worth it if you're digging deeper into noir than simply the huge classics. Out of the Dark Side ones, I like #4 and #5 (I haven't seen six yet, but I've seen the rest).

Just finished watching Pushover. Holy smokes what a great noir! I have all 4 Indicator box sets and this is by far my favorite film of the bunch.

A-list stars with Fred MacMurray and Kim Novak, tight tense script, fantastic location shots with beautiful cars and rain. I love American films from the 1950’s and can’t believe I’ve never heard of this gem before.

I had originally ordered the triple feature for the Alton films last month, but my order was canceled because Amazon was out-of-stock, so I got a copy of He Walked By Night’s solo edition on eBay, and I’ve been waiting on this repress of Raw Deal.

I think it would make a great double feature with Tight Spot starring Ginger Rogers and Edward G. Robinson. Not sure if you got around to that one yet from the sets, but it's one of my favorites (Pushover is top 6 for sure too).
