Did "I, the Jury" play in any retro theaters this year, the way remastered classic films often do? I would love to see it in 3-D on the big screen.

Kino have announced a new release of The Lady from Shanghai coming January 31st. It has new commentary tracks from Imogen Sara Smith, and Tim Lucas. It also has some extras that I don't believe were found on the releases from Indicator, TCM, or Mill Creek.

Quote:
Coming January 31st!

The Lady from Shanghai (1948)
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Imogen Sara Smith
• NEW Audio Commentary by Novelist and Critic Tim Lucas
• Audio commentary by Filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich
• A Conversation with Peter Bogdanovich: 2000 Interview
• Comments by Film Noir Historian Eddie Muller
- Epic Noir Poem
- Back Story
- It’s Film Noir Distilled
• Theatrical Trailers for THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI, THE STRANGER and TOUCH OF EVIL
• Reversible Art
• Limited Edition O-Card Slipcase
• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc
• Optional English Subtitles

B&W 88 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
Baffling murders, fascinating plot twists and remarkable camera work all contribute to this spellbinding, time-honored film noir written, directed by and starring Orson Welles (Citizen Kane, Touch of Evil). Hired to work on a yacht belonging to the disabled husband of femme fatale Rita Hayworth (Gilda, Separate Tables), Welles plays an innocent man drawn into a dangerous web of intrigue and murder. The subject of great controversy and scandal upon its initial release, The Lady from Shanghai shocked 1948 audiences by presenting Hayworth with her flaming red hair cut short and dyed champagne blonde. Decades later, The Lady from Shanghai is considered vintage Welles, his famous hall of mirrors climax hailed as one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history.

The Indicator release doesn't have the Eddie Muller comments and of course the two new commentaries.

From the Indicator, Kino is missing the Simon Callow video essay, the brief archival interview with Rita Hayworth, the Joe Dante trailer commentary, the image gallery, and from the OOP collector's edition, the 40-page booklet.

I already have the Indicator release of The Lady from Shanghai. Unless Kino has a new master I won't feel the need to buy theirs.

I only have the Mill Creek Rita Hayworth set, so might have to pick this up.

I also feel no need to re-buy The Lady from Shanghai, a noir I don't have a ton of love for.

That said, Welles' monologue about the shark-eating frenzy is a pretty damn cool cinematic moment.

An Imogen Sara Smith commentary is an automatic purchase for me, even though I already have the Indicator.

Have the Indicator now and had the Mill Creek release before that. A 4K would be an instant purchase, but not sure I need to buy it for a third time on Blu.

At this rate, it wouldn’t surprise me if Kino announces The Big Heat. It’s another Sony noir that Indicator released, but that one has no US edition in print since Twilight Time’s editions are long OOP.

They might also announce some of the noirs in Mill Creek’s Noir Archive sets, at least the bigger ones like Crimson Kimono (also a former TT title).

Crimson Kimono is also part of Indicator's Samuel Fuller at Columbia box set. The Indicator edition of The Big Heat is region-free.

Ditto! Tim Lucas is as well so this is a double-automatic double-title for me.

I know; I own it. I was just bringing it up because I have a feeling Kino might do another edition, for what it’s worth.

Not from Kino. it is speculated that Sony will be releasing it themselves in a future Columbia Classics set.

If they could find the missing 60 minutes from Welles original version.. now that would be something

That would be amazing, but this film is evidently not a The Magnificent Ambersons situation, in which the footage might still be out there somewhere. In this case, it's tragically gone for good.

Honestly, I like the film the way it is, but I'm curious to at least know what was cut.

Isn't that what they thought about the missing footage from Metropolis?

One can still hope.

Then I'll wait. I see no reason to buy a high profile film like this that has a 4K remaster on regular BD.

No, because the excised footage from TLFS was never part of the released film and was presumably discarded, like most cut footage was back then. Metropolis's missing footage was in all the original release prints, and a lot of those were destroyed during WW2 or just lost, or cut down to make shortened versions of the film. TLFS missing footage never made it to hundreds or thousands of prints like Metropolis's did.
