Per KL's website, a re-release of 99 River Street (1953) is due August 13:

Quote:
In this classic film noir, a down-on-his-luck former boxing contender (John Payne, Larceny, The Boss), turned cab driver has to hide from the police when he’s accused of murdering his badgering wife when her lifeless body turns up in the back of his cab. On the run and out of time, he needs to bring the real killer to justice before the cops and the thugs responsible for the set-up get their hands on him. Top-notch direction by the great Phil Karlson (Kansas City Confidential, The Phoenix City Story) and featuring a great cast that includes Evelyn Keyes (Iron Man), Brad Dexter (Run Silent, Run Deep), Frank Faylen (The Looters), Peggie Castle (Back from the Dead) and Jay Adler (The Killing).

2016 HD Master by Kino Lorber – From a 2K Scan of the 35mm Fine Grain
Audio Commentary by Film Historian and Host of TCM's Noir Alley Eddie Muller
Theatrical Trailer
Optional English Subtitles

Easily one of the best detective movie i've seen and highly recommended. I haven't been a huge fan of Fritz Lang's Hollywood years so far (I love his German movies) but this is up there with his best movies, no doubt about it.

My favorite Glenn Ford noir (or neo noir to some) is EXPERIMENT IN TERROR (1962).

Don't see how Experiment in Terror qualifies as "noir"...it's a straight-up thriller (one that could have used some trimming, but good all the same.)

Lee Marvin makes your skin crawl in that film.

My favourite Ford noir is

From the Imprint Essential Film Noir Volume 2 box.

I wish someone would rescue the Christmas noir(ish) Mr. Soft Touch from the Columbia vaults, and the Western noir(ish) The Secret of Convict Lake from the Fox (ugh) vaults.

^PLUNDER OF THE SUN is fun, have been waiting on a Kino release (should the Batjak licensing issues ever clear up.) Would make for a good double bill with their release of SECRET OF THE INCAS.

And yeah, been waiting on THE SECRET OF CONVICT LAKE for a while myself.

FRAMED is a really fine Ford noir, and HUMAN DESIRE was adequate.

Don't remember if I mentioned watching these:

Girl in the Kremlin - Um okay... this movie has nothing to do with a girl in the Kremlin. Still, it was actually pretty good, paced fairly well, and had a couple of really good moments.

Man Afraid - I was actually afraid of this one given how dreadful The Female Animal was, but this turned out to be as good as Girl in the Kremlin. I don't understand why the dad was blaming the preacher for killing his son when it was his son who broke into his house and got what he deserved, but the movie was very enjoyable.

Chicago Deadline - This was the best of the three I just watched. I really liked how the male lead never actually met the female lead because she was already dead at the start of the film. The twist around her death was also unexpected and seeing how far the rabbit hole went for this journalist was pretty interesting.

Anyone looking to trick their significant other into watching a noir-adjacent movie masquerading as a rom com should check out Hit Man on Netflix (directed by Richard Linklater). Maybe too lighthearted to be considered a neo-noir, but it has enough elements to keep noir fans interested. At the core of the movie is a very good example of a femme fatale, and one who we immediately recognize as trouble when she's introduced. Small mistakes spiral into larger crimes, and the whole situation is rather messy by the end as the characters try to weasel their way out of trouble. Has some rather steamy (mostly non-nude) romance scenes between Glen Powel and Adria Arjona to, and some classic Linklater dialogue to drive some of the themes of the movie.

Again, most would probably say this isn't noir but there's definitely some strong noir elements at play here. Blu-ray release is probably unlikely, but who knows. The Linklater name does carry a lot of weight.

FILM NOIR: THE DARK SIDE OF CINEMA XX (1950-1954)
• 2020-2022 HD Masters by Paramount Pictures – From 4K Scans
• NEW Audio Commentary for CAPTAIN CAREY, U.S.A. by Film Historian/Screenwriter Gary Gerani
• NEW Audio Commentary for APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH by Heath Holland, Host of Cereal at Midnight Podcast with Max Allan Collins, the Author of Road to Perdition
• NEW Audio Commentary for MAKE HASTE TO LIVE by Film Historian Samm Deighan
• Theatrical Trailers
• Optional English Subtitles

This collection features three film noir classics. CAPTAIN CAREY, U.S.A. (1950) – Screen legend Alan Ladd (Lucky Jordan) plays the title role in this outstanding noir tale of a former OSS operative who returns to Italy after the war to avenge the death of resistance worker Giulia (Wanda Hendrix, Sierra)—only to find out that his “deceased” lover is not only still alive, but also now the wife of a powerful Italian baron (Francis Lederer, Midnight). Carey decides to stick around, hoping to flush out the traitor who had caused the wartime deaths of several of his OSS colleagues and resistance fighters. Enhanced by the musical number “Mona Lisa,” which won an Academy Award (Best Original Song, 1950) and later became an all-time classic. Directed by Hollywood great Mitchell Leisen (No Man of Her Own). APPOINTMENT WITH DANGER (1951) – Ladd is back as the U.S. Mail’s Ace Agent Smashes the Biggest Mail Robbery Plan in History! Screen legend Alan Ladd (Chicago Deadline) is Postal Inspector Al Goddard, assigned to investigate the murder of a fellow officer. The only witness to the crime is Sister Augustine (Phyllis Calvert, Time Out of Mind), who identifies the photograph of one of the assailants. This leads Goddard to a seedy hotel where he learns that the assailant is a member of a gang headed by Earl Boettiger (Paul Stewart, Kiss Me Deadly), and he soon discovers that the gang is planning a million-dollar mail robbery. This taut and thrilling film noir also features Jan Sterling (Female on the Beach) and future Dragnet stars, Jack Webb and Harry Morgan, as Stewart’s henchmen. Directed by noir master Lewis Allen (So Evil My Love). MAKE HASTE TO LIVE (1954) – Only a Gangster Killer Knew the Secret of Her Past! In this taut noir melodrama, Crystal (Dorothy McGuire, The Spiral Staircase) has unknowingly married a murderer. She knew Steve (Stephen McNally, The Raging Tide) was handsome and charming. But by the time she discovered he was a cold-blooded killer, it was too late: he had already become her husband. So she ran like never before, and built herself a new life together with her daughter. And years later, when she learns that Steve had been jailed for murder, Crystal thought she was safe. But when Steve is released from prison, he has a deadly reunion in mind. With Mary Murphy (The Wild One) and Edgar Buchanan (Human Desire), Make Haste to Live was the final feature film by veteran director William A. Seiter (Hot Saturday).

Kino seems to be re-releasing all the old Olive Films releases, in most cases with new scans. Hope they do that for Cry Vengeance, which in my opinion is a nice little noir hidden gem. It's a much better movie than one might expect, and the location shooting in Alaska makes it unique.

Also, if anyone hasn't purchased WA's new Act of Violence release, it's excellent. It's truly one of the darkest, most grim films from the classic film noir era. It really "goes there". Script, acting, direction - top notch across the board. May be a top 10 film noir, for me. The picture and sound is excellent, as is typical for Warner Archive. Highly recommend. It's worth supporting this release so that we'll get more film noirs.

Two notable film noir releases coming from Kino in September. First, as part of their Dark Side of Cinema Volume XXI (21) set, they'll be releasing Cloak and Dagger, Shack Out on 101, ad Short Cut to Hell (new to BD). There will also be a new individual release of Body and Soul, sourced from a 4K scan.

Great interview. There is a huge Narrow Margin sized hole in the selection of film noir's available on blu ray that needs to be filled. Also as much as I love Gene Hackman I think the never version stinks.

The original is much better, but the remake is decent enough as a throwaway action/suspense film—Peter Hyams is a good filmmaker who did a respectable job on it. But it lacks the punch and coolness of the 1952 one, definitely.
