Great interview. There is a huge Narrow Margin sized hole in the selection of film noir's available on blu ray that needs to be filled. Also as much as I love Gene Hackman I think the never version stinks.
Alan K. Rode knows his stuff! 👍

Month after month, I hope WAC will announce it but… Jacqueline White, who plays a pivotal part in the film, is still with us at 101 years old.

I watched Too Late For Tears for the first time tonight and loved it. It's definitely one of my favorites already. Lizabeth Scott in this film is one of the best femme fetales of the genre

I watched The Murder of Marie Roget the other day. That was a damn good movie. Right up there with the likes of The Midnight Story, Six Bridges to Cross, and Vice Squad.

FILM NOIR: THE DARK SIDE OF CINEMA XXI
• NEW Audio Commentary for CLOAK AND DAGGER by Heath Holland, Host of Cereal at Midnight Podcast with Max Allan Collins, Author of Road to Perdition
• NEW Audio Commentary for SHACK OUT ON 101 by Professor and Film Scholar Jason A. Ney
• NEW Audio Commentary for SHORT CUT TO HELL by Film Historian/Screenwriter Gary Gerani
• SHORT CUT TO HELL Theatrical Trailer
• Optional English Subtitles

CLOAK AND DAGGER (1946) B&W 106 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated

2020 HD Master by Paramount Pictures – From a 4K Scan! The Moment He Fell in Love Was His Moment of Greatest Danger! From legendary director Fritz Lang (Scarlet Street, The Big Heat), one of the grand architects of film noir, comes an engrossing WWII spy thriller years ahead of its time. The great Gary Cooper (High Noon) is an American nuclear physicist, recruited by the Office of Strategic Services and parachuted into war-torn Europe to obtain military secrets. But the deeper he probes, the deadlier his mission becomes…especially when his involvement with a mysterious resistance fighter (Lilli Palmer, Body and Soul) catapults him into an intense maelstrom of danger, betrayal, romance and murder. The fourth and final of Lang’s classic anti-Nazi films, following Man Hunt, Hangmen Also Die! and Ministry of Fear, Cloak and Dagger is the quintessential wartime suspense picture, elevated by Sol Polito’s (Sergeant York) terrific black-and-white cinematography and Max Steiner’s (Gone with the Wind) rousing score.

SHACK OUT ON 101 (1955) B&W 80 Minutes 1.85:1 Not Rated

2021 HD Master by Paramount Pictures – From a 4K Scan! On the Shady Side of the Highway! Check into a hotbed of lethal cloak and dagger with the great Lee Marvin (Prime Cut), Terry Moore (Come Back, Little Sheba) and Frank Lovejoy (The Hitch-Hiker) in Shack Out on 101. An attractive waitress (Moore) at a seaside café gets caught in a web of treacherous intrigue when she discovers that her workplace is a secret station for spies. It seems that the café is close to an experimental lab that harbors national defense secrets, and a ring of sinister spies has come to steal them. Now it’s up to the desperate waitress and a network of undercover FBI men to stop the diabolical scheme. But not before they all stop along the way for a sizzling round of passion and romance! Featuring Keenan Wynn (Point Blank) and Whit Bissell (He Walked by Night), this one-of-a-kind potboiler comes stylishly directed by cult filmmaker Edward Dein (Curse of the Undead) and beautifully shot in glorious black-and-white by Floyd Crosby (High Noon).

SHORT CUT TO HELL (1957) B&W 87 Minutes 1.85:1 Not Rated

2023 HD Master by Paramount Pictures – From a 4K Scan! Professional Killer...with a Gun for Hire! The first and only directorial effort by legendary actor James Cagney (White Heat, Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye), Short Cut to Hell is a steamy, gritty remake of the Alan Ladd starrer This Gun for Hire, based on a novel by the great Graham Greene (The Third Man). Hardboiled hitman Kyle Niles (Robert Ivers, The Delicate Delinquent) is hired to commit two murders, only to be double-crossed by his employer Bahrwell (Jacques Aubuchon, Thunder Road). On the lam and seeking revenge, Kyle kidnaps singer Glory Hamilton (Georgann Johnson, Midnight Cowboy), the girlfriend of the police detective in charge of his pursuit (William Bishop, The Boss). Glory tries to convince him to surrender before it’s too late, but Kyle’s humanity is buried deep, and his thirst for vengeance is unquenchable. Destiny joined them…The Devil took over from there! As Cagney himself states in the film’s opening, Ivers and Johnson are two “fresh, exciting young talents” who anchor this fiery film noir.

Because it's a Fox film owned by Disney, and I guess when they were open to licensing to boutique labels, it wasn't high on anyone's priority list.

Also probably didn't have a HD master available and I believe Fox wasn't allowing any boutique labels to make new masters.

BODY AND SOUL (1947)
• 2021 HD Master by Paramount Pictures – From a 4K Scan

B&W 106 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
The great John Garfield (The Postman Always Rings Twice, He Ran All the Way) gives an Oscar-nominated performance (Best Actor, 1947) in this knockout noir tale of driving ambition. Garfield stars as Charley Davis, a strong-willed young prizefighter whose ruthless quest for a shot at the title forces him to mortgage his humanity to a corrupt boxing syndicate. But when faced with the chance to regain his self-respect, Charley climbs into the ring one last time—in an unforgettable climactic fight scene, breathtakingly shot by legendary cinematographer James Wong Howe (Pursued, The Rose Tattoo). Widely regarded as one of the best boxing pictures ever made, Body and Soul was Academy Award-nominated for its sharp script by Force of Evil’s Abraham Polonsky (Best Writing, Original Screenplay, 1947) and won for its innovative editing by Francis D. Lyon and Robert Parrish (Best Film Editing, 1947). Powerfully directed by Robert Rossen (All the King’s Men, The Hustler) and featuring Lilli Palmer (Cloak and Dagger), Anne Revere (Secret Beyond the Door), Canada Lee (Cry, the Beloved Country) and William Conrad (The Killers).

Film Noir: The Dark Side of Noir XX delayed from August 27th to September 17th. This means, both XX and XXI are coming out on the same day. Also the same day Body and Soul, mentioned above is coming out too.

4K scan, but not a 4K release? That's disapointing. Wonder if I should wait.

Yeah Kino has only put out a handful of B&W movies out on UHD, ie Scarlet Street. I would not expect it except for a few major titles, at least for awhile. (KLI has said the cost of doing UHDs continues to decline though)

Not to mention Paths of Glory, Alphaville, Fear and Desire, and The Killing as well too I think that’s all of them that you mentioned. There might be others too, but I don’t know the names of any of them.

It's probably more accurate to say that Kino hasn't released many nitrate-era black & white (and color) movies.
