I consider World On A Wire by Rainer Werner Fassbinder to be a neo-noir film.

...even though most people classify it as science fiction.

It's definitely worth a look for noir lovers.

Speaking of Glenn Ford, I consider Blake Edwards' EXPERIMENT IN TERROR to be an excellent neo-noir.

Yeah, It's in what I'm calling The Late Period section, which is a transitional time between the classic film noir period, and the neo noir one.

It isn't, of course, and that's a slight to Nicholson.

Here's a great read...

Paste Magazine's 100 Best Film Noirs of All Time

I've been a fan of Paste Magazine for many years now, because of the quality of their articles and music/movie reviews. The above list has a few controversial "Is this really noir?" choices on the list, but I'd say that it hits the mark on the genre more often than not.

I was surprised by the choice for the number one spot. I agree that it's a fantastic film noir, and that it's one of the greats of the genre, but I never would have expected it to take the top spot, especially since a film that the director made the following year usually earns much higher accolades as a noir.

I've never heard of Paste Magazine, but they seem to have a very broad definition of Film Noir....

Movies like Dark City, I've never heard classified as even Neo Noir but they have it rated above Naked City...

I like their top 10 though I'm not sure I'd choose their number one to be in my top 25. I appreciate Woman in the Window but I do not hold it with the same level of regard as the article's author.

Other than that, a strong argument could be made for most of their Top 25.

Dark City is widely accepted as a neo noir (or more specifically a tech-noir like Blade Runner). Some on the list are definitely questionable in my opinion, but the whole open to interpretation thing is part of what makes film noir great to discuss.

Watched Too Late for Tears the other day and LOVED it. Lizabeth Scott was great, as was Dan Duyrea. Will have to say, the ending reminded me of a few other films which escape my mind at the moment, (my wife laughed and said she saw it coming). Overall, a classic in my book and would love to see it on blu-ray with Ed Mueller commenting, please.

Damn where did you see it? I have only ever seen HORRIBLE prints that were almost unwatchable. It is coming to blu-ray though right? Flickr Ally?

Thanks for the read OWL, good stuff and I agree with your points on the #1 choice but man does that need to be released on blu-ray!

I have some of the TCM film noir series titles still on my dvr, decided to just record the ones I haven't seen already and don't have on disc (though I missed a few early on). I've been every few days watching and deleting another one, but this one's a keeper, at least for another visit or two anyway. (Wonder if any of the other dozen I have left to watch will be in the same boat.)

The one I didn't finish, tried to watch it a while back before on TCM, and tried again this time, but just couldn't get past the beginning again was The Tattooed Stranger. Just didn't click, and needed the dvr disk space for more deserving occupants.

[Show spoiler]Woman in the Window
is pretty good, as I recall, but wouldn't be that high on any list I would make. Good thing I don't make lists.

Nice list. They must not of watched the end of The Woman in the Window. It kills the whole movie and is a lazy ending.

This reads as more of a "crime film" list to me, minus the gangster films, sort of. Agree that #1 is an interesting choice. While the end is a bit of a cop out, it's still a highly enjoyable film, but never would I rank it above the likes of Double Indemnity, Out of the Past, etc
