HDR ... and OLED ... long lasting happy marriage?
...Or forever after with LED? ...QLED?

Love @ first sight; how good is it in 2018, and beyond?
Or should we stick with Jurassic Park?

Do you use HDR with games? How many hours a day do you leave your TV on?
How good are the 8 Series from the 6 Series (LG OLED)?
Is Sony better than LG?
Why Panasonic OLED is not here in the United States of America, any clue, the true reason?

How long till Extreme HDR (EHDR)?
What is the meaning of ...

Forgive my intruding in this thread but I figured this was the absolute best place to ask this laymen's question. I'm still a novice with this technology. As of right now, I do not have UHD display but I do have a UHD player and a few UHD discs. The display is in the cards for later this year but I really wanted to get to the heart of my confusing with this format...

...is HDR nothing more than artificial boosting?

I ask it that way because I'm thinking about it from the cinema perspective. I know one of the points of HDR or THE point about HDR is about making the colors closer to real life but cinema, or most films, are not trying to replicate real life when it comes to the color palette.

Even with that, my level of confusing comes down to this; a film like BATMAN v SUPERMAN, from what I've read up on, had HDR as part of it's post production workflow so, in essences, the UHD disc of that film is pretty much THE closest approximation of that film. That part I get. But, 2001 is coming to the format this fall and, if I'm wrong, please correct me, HDR was not a piece of technology back then. So, in theory, adding HDR to 2001 for the UHD release is essentially artificially boosting of the colors, yes?

Sorry for the long post but I really hope someone can break this down to laymen's terms for me.

Thanks.

From a raw qualitative perspective think of HDR/10 bit as "simply" increasing the range of available brightness along with the number of steps (or shades of gray) in between.

So say SDR is a range of [0-100], HDR is a range between [0-1,000] or [0-4,000] or even [0-10,000].

Or if you want to use bit depth levels, SDR 8 bit has 256 steps, HDR 10 bit has 1,024 and HDR 12 bit has 4,096 steps. The more shades of gray (or steps) you have for the available brightness the better. The best picture quality has the most shades and the most brightness combined.

So if you think about a TV that has say 1,000 nits of brightness. If Step 0 is 0 nits (black) and the last step is 1,000 nits, if you have SDR 8 bit you only have 256 different steps of brightness in between 0 and 1,000. But if you spread out that few different levels of brightness control over so many nits you end up with an image that looks bizarre. Which is why SDR is typically graded to around 100 nits range so you can have those 256 steps more close together.

If you have HDR 10, then you've got 1,024 steps within that available 1,000 nits. Meaning, you can control 1,024 different levels of brightness within that range.

It's essentially giving the content creator a much bigger canvas with more precise tools to paint the picture on your screen. But just because you have a larger canvas with more tools doesn't mean you need to use all of them. But it's not just about brightness, it's really about EVERYTHING in between.

in a selfish sort of way, I’m partial to my possible scenario for the future, as I can bookmark that above ^ HDR grading post and years from now, then remind folks I told them so – like here…… https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...d#post15227179

Looking forward next to six letters HDR+ HFR

P.S. since the time of that HFR hyperlinked (underlined) post ^, the UHD HFR demo has been taken down, but I’ve renewed the tech specs of the original live stream.

I didn’t realize Bob was still active on the forums, that said, it appears he has rather strong opinions on the subject, e.g. from AVForums – https://www.avforums.com/article/for...releases.13707 , quotes -

“It has no relevance to production photography.

It should not be included as a function for classic films, unless the filmmakers have a desire to re-visit, and create a new version, a re-imagining.

It will not work well with most classic films, and can be problematic to those that have needed restoration based upon fade.

Want to see 2001, or Lawrence, Ben-Hur, The Godfather, The Magnificent Seven, or Elvira Madigan in 4K?

No problem.

We're ready for it, and there's no reason why those films can't be released, except those which don't fit on the current sized discs.

And NONE of them should be released with HDR.”

Quite ^ expressive with all the caps.

I was thinking about you last evening after I saw this image of the pretty colored bottles on a Samsung Q9FN -

at their Summit and then again later that night after getting my World Cup soccer fix and then watching Yellowstone at home - https://variety.com/2018/tv/news/yel...ng-1202856869/

so, what’s the progress on the cali disc? Anybody here been in contact with Stacey about this recently? Kris? Darin?
