Very happy with the 1080p picture that I get with my PS3, PS4 or U.S. BD Sony BR player running. My Sony is a 710 model, and although 3-4 years old, it looks as good as the new 800 series.

In short, 1080p & Blu-Ray will do me.
Have you seen 4k? Or are you just assuming the difference is negligible?
It is very possible that all TV sets will be 4K by the time you need a new tv. Why deprive yourself of the advantages?

Oh, last night after viewing a post match EPL highlights show, now I understand what you meant. From your original post I had actually thought your guys lost the match since I had no knowledge of the Sunderland v. Man City particulars.

Bummer for you guys as I guess you could have won....and I guess that is some sort of testament to your season.

Anyway, the most impressive thing I noticed during the entire match was actually from the West Ham side of things…in particular Jarvis’s ‘soccer sportsmanship’ rather than ‘soccer professionalism’ in that he didn’t choose to dive in the penalty box at the 15’ mark when he easily could have succumbed to that temptation like so many other professionals do throughout the world on a weekly basis.

Tip of the hat to ethical play.

P.S.
I also noticed a lot of empty seats in the stadium. Holiday approaching or discontent/disinterest in the Club itself?

Until then, I’ll relate to you what the colorists who’ve played with the plug-in think…as well as a couple color scientists in Hollywood who’ve seen demos (in L.A., at HPA, etc.) think…they think that Dolby Vision HDR mastering in P3 has the potential for superior picture quality than simply widening the color gamut of traditional dynamic range captured imagery to B.T. 2020 colorimetry. Of course, Dolby Vision (or a comparably efficient and effective HDR solution) with even wider color gamut than P3 (B.T. 2020) would be PQ nirvana.

The Dolby Vision color grading plug-in is rather nifty . It does about 90% of the HDR grade automatically and the colorist then manually tweaks from there to produce the final grade. For home deliverables, one just does a trim pass as you would for DCI P3 -> Rec. 709 home deliverables…. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...p3#post8524797

As an update, the ITU is not only considering Dolby Vision as an HDR solution; but also, proposals from Technicolor, Philips and the BBC.
Addendum ^

Today I was reminded via P.M. that Microsoft is another OTT streaming partner and TCL being an additional display manufacturer planning to offer Dolby Vision.

When you think about it, it's quite an impressive early list of partners that Dolby has signed on compared to the failed effort of RED with Redray and Odemax.

I have seen 4K and its great if you're sitting up close, like 3-4 feet from a 65 inch. However, if you're sitting at a normal distance (say 9 feet from a 65), 4K is superfluous.

If you must get a 4K, get an 85 inch set and sit 9 feet from it, otherwise its a waste.

BTW, those 4K edge lit LED set you see in the stores and extremely bright and colors pop, the picture is really sharp, however we know that they're being feed a pure and pristine 4K signal for the most part and not stuff that we're used to getting off of cable and streaming.

I don't buy into that. People were saying the same about dvd compared to bluray but I noticed an instant difference from around 7 feet away.

Peter, you may be able to fool our other membership but Steed and I both know your true sentiments….on Tuesday, you were one of those fans busy requesting tickets to the greatest sporting event there is for your trip down to Brazil this summer - http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/y=...e-2319535.html

Plus, we know you’re just drooling, waiting for this soccer doc to debut….

Well, I’ve had my disagreements with Wally in the past over his, shall we say *cavalier* comments about 3D and ultimatums regarding the digital intermediate process but I really wish him eventual success in making the transition from cinematographer to Director if that’s what he has his heart set on because for one thing, he had the balls to pursue it.

I think the fact that many more writers (compared to D.P.s) have made successful moves to directing emphasizes the notion of the overwhelming importance of a good script.

Since there are still 720p sets for sale, I think it's going to be a very long time (if ever) before ALL sets are 4K. There's always going to be a need for less expensive low-end sets.

Sony announced their 2014 4K pricing today and they are quite expensive:
XBR-nnX950B (LED Local dimming): 65" $8000, 85" $25,000
XBR-nnX900B: (Edge dimming): 55" $4000, 65" $5000, 79" $9000
XBR-nnX850B: (Triilluminous): 49" $2100, 55" $3000, 65" $4000, 70" $5400.

Initial prices will probably drop quickly, but those will be $500 drops....still expensive and priced primarily for people who don't have to care about price.

Following the money, doesn’t look good so far….it needs *the Chinese factor*. On the other hand, Heaven Is for Real only cost $12 million to produce and has reportedly taken in $7 million over only a two-day period…
http://variety.com/2014/film/news/jo...ce-1201159719/

b.t.w. ‘officially’ Heaven Is for Real has a 4K DCP Movie Release, as currently indicated on the official website for such things here - http://www.sony.co.uk/pro/products/d...movie-releases.

Factually, it was shot with an HD digital camera and went through a 2K digital intermediate to produce a 2K DCP Movie Release, specs as follows….

Image Format: 2048x858 (Scope)
Audio Format: 5.1
Total File Size: 121 GB

It will require changing the entire content preparation workflow. It must be supported from image acquisition…then through editing and color grading post houses including support in other brand monitors (not just the prototype 30” Sony OLED announcement that Richard previously linked but, other brands as well).
Which is a problem for the major studios because they have so much invested in DCI P3 (and forced the movie theaters to switch to it over the last decade). The broadcasters on the other hand have more freedom to choose what to use for UHDTV and they were the ones that decided on the Rec. 2020 color space.

Gamut mapping doesn't have to be expensive and there are reasonable cost methods for doing it. For example Technicolor is promoting the idea of using a combination of metadata and three 1D LUTs.

Maybe you guys should play the likes of Man City and Chelsea every weekend and then you wouldn’t be facing relegation.
