Geoff, it’s a good thing though as it brings more *awareness*
![]() I was on a group ride a few weekends ago and I asked about 10-15 guys and gals during the excursion if they knew what ‘4K’ was in terms of video or TV. None did…and these are successful, higher than average income folks, all of whom own their own homes, multiple flat panels, nice cars, etc. The even more disconcerting thing to me was that more than a couple mentioned that they can’t remember the last time their teenage daughter or son watched something on TV….all now doing it on a mobile device (small). |

The other big question is, how far can it miniaturise, before it becomes impractical? Let's not forget that smartwatches are aiming at the mobile crown. (No pun intended). Apple added video playback to their Watch OS yesterday. If these things do, indeed become the next smartphone, that means 1.5-1.8 inch video in the mobile space. Now, before folks start getting all twitchy and readying the 'off topic' channels, this is relevant to 4k. Boy is it relevant! The upcoming generation are watching on mobile phones, tablets, laptops and soon smartwatches. How do you sell 4k to these people? Is 4k worth it on a tablet screen for example. If they are going home and watching on individual tablets with headphones etc.. Where is the sell point for 4k. If big screen TV becomes niche, what chance does 4k have? granted this could take twenty-thirty years to show its true damage but it saddens me that a generation may not have access to big screens and the very finest quality. We have to hope there are enough young folk out there who are still interested in quality. The alternative is simply too devastating to even think of. 4k needs to be shouted about. Twitter, Facebook etc.. Make sure stores sell these things for everything they are worth. Above all, hope that young people can be reached with this stuff. Film is too Important to become the MP3 of its generation. |

It made sense, as not everyone will want to shoot on the more cumbersome 65mm equipment (as mentioned in the other THR piece, they even had to make a custom film mag for Tarantino to use on his famous long takes) and the Alexa 65 seems to be the digital large format camera du jour.

The BBC/NHK have proposed their HDR system with the NHK posting the transfer function and the BBC posting an explanation on how it can be made compatible with current TVs. It is a relative luminance HDR system so the brightness can be changed to match the viewing environment (bright, dim, dark, etc...) and the HDR video signal is acceptable when viewed on a standard TV. The transfer function is a gamma function from 0% to 50% (with 50% being the white reference level) and at over 50% is a logarithmic function which allows for a peak brightness 12 times higher than the white reference level. While I am skeptical about whether it would be 100% backward compatible it does sound like the HDR transfer function would work great in a broadcast system that was designed to use it.

Thursday calls for a *Throwback Thursday* post.
![]() Post from lunchtime on June 4 So, some may wonder, what the hey, power windows ^ for what? Well, when your LUT converts the standard dynamic range P3 color files into Dolby’s Perceptual Quantizer (EOTF) files for the HDR pass to produce the HDR theatrical deliverable (DCP), some things in the frame (e.g. the sun in a cloudless sky, a light in a room of the production design of an interior, etc.) can become disproportionally brighter than you’d like and thereby causing a distraction (not good) by drawing away audience attention from the part of the image that the filmmaker would actually like the audience to focus upon. How to mitigate this? Well, one way is by tweaking the brightness down by using power windows around that dang sun or bright interior light….made too bright (in the context of filmmaker's vision) by the LUT conversion. |

For as a neutral observer at last year’s event, I recall you putting into perspective the grading/voting system, the calculated winner, etc. for those of us unable to be there. It would be good to get your take on things, i.e. no brand fanboy-ism, no preferential display technology fanboy-ism (e.g. OLED vs LCD) and an unbiased analysis of any possible arbitrary methods used in the shootout with regards to calibration, ambient lighting, content feed, etc. Because no shootout is perfect and there are always caveats. Question is how significant are those caveats, as for example, for those seriously looking to purchase a new 4K/UHD around Christmas? ….or maybe next year’s Super Bowl. |

Given Jurassic World’s acquisition - http://motion.kodak.com/motion/Publi...65_mm_Film.htm
It’s a pity the theatrical audiences tonight will only get 2K resolution (2K DCPs). Conversely, in a couple hours on the Fox lot…the NHK invitation reads - Witness Visuals and Sound Beyond Anything You’ve Ever Experienced as Japan’s NHK Televises the Revolutionary 8K Super Hi-Vision in 22.2 Surround Sound. For the first time ever in North America, NHK in association with FOX Sports will air live the unmatched, unrivaled wonder of 8K Super Hi-Vision with 22.2 Surround Sound from the FIFA Women’s World Cup Soccer Tournament in Canada. Thought for the evening: Soccer players (Japan vs. Cameroon) rule over dinosaurs….at least in the theater. |

http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-s...e-460951619836 I can guarantee you that in the marketing to promote 8K TVs in Japan, you won’t be seeing any NHK 8K labels on the grass, like you have previously seen on the real stuff for men. Sports will drive Next-Gen video (and its parameters, e.g. spatial resolution, temporal resolution, wider color gamut, extended dynamic range) compared to motion pictures. So it’s something we should all keep in mind from time to time. |

and here (in 2015) we have a retailer competition to determine the “King of TV” and guess what? All the contenders are 4K/UHD tvs ![]() ![]() P.S. This morning I received a couple PMs inquiring as to how will they (Value Electronics) calibrate the gamma (2.4? BT.1886?) for the TVs in the shootout. You would have to ask Robert for the particulars, but I can remind folks factually how the math works out and its potential implications. |
