The only problem I have with DAD is the horrible CGI that was used (particularly in the windsurfing sequence)
Agreed. The invisible car didn't bother me. The dreadful CGI did. Oh, and Halle Berry.

It was stunt-joke casting that didn't pay off. If they'd hired a better actress with the same looks it might've worked fine.

I believe that the thinking behind the Christmas Jones character was that she was supposed to be a Lara Croft clone, a sexy scientist in shorts and a crop top who is both beautiful and resourceful.

But, yeah, Denise Richards's performance is just so utterly awful, every line right down to the flirtatious little quips sound so forced that it's painful to watch at times. Even if she had some charisma, she might have been able to overcome her acting limitations.

It doesn't help that she is completely overshadowed by Sophie Marceau in every way possible.

The score for Dr No is terrible. Monty Norman didn't have a clue. His Bond theme would have been rubbish had it not been redone by John Barry. I think on the documentaries somewhere its acknowledged that the music for Dr No is its weakest link.

It did a bit but not quite enough. As the documentary shows, for much of its life on home video those scenes didn't even have the music with them.

The best transfer is YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE.

Now I saw DR. NO from BOND CONNERY vol. and now I saw it again on the current 2016 set . The BOND CONNERY vol. looked better. Are they supposed to be the same transfers with just new packaging?
Watched Thunderball recently and it was fine. None of the films have been redone so Dr No should be the same. Do you have that original set to confirm its not just your memory cheating?

Moore looked embarrassing in A View to a Kill as they couldn't hide his age. The documentary confirms it was an opinion held by Moore himself and the producers although they let him withdraw from the series rather than ask him to leave. The only reason he was still there was because there was nobody to replace him.

I remember watching Dr. No with a girl once and she commented that the music sounded like something from an episode of Gilligan's Island - I think it was at the scene where Quarrel comically takes a double-sip of his rum on Crab Key.

The music just doesn't have the power or energy of John Barry's Bond scores, which I've always thought were much better than his non-Bond ones including those he won Oscars for (I thought Out of Africa's score was dull and repetitive for example).

And for the record, I think Burt Bacharach's music for Casino Royale is wonderful - at least for that movie. It fits the crazy, psychedelic, anarchic vibe of the film perfectly.

It didn't help that AVTAK came out at the same year as the likes of Rambo and Commando starring Stallone and Schwarzenegger - it just accentuated how geriatric Moore looked at the time.

I do have the 1967 Casino Royale but I've not watched it on Bluray and have not seen the film since the 70's.
I expect I'll give it a go during my current Bond viewings. Goldeneye next.

As it's been a while you may not have much recollection of it, but go into CR '67 with an open mind and don't expect anything like an actual Bond film. Just go with the flow though and it's a lot of fun.

Nah, CR '67 is terrible by any standards.

Gotta agree. Casino Royale '67 is just painfully unfunny even by 60s comedy standards. The behind the scenes troubles made it an uneven mess, it doesn't help with the at times incoherent plot.

Oh, I’m not saying it’s a good film, but it’s definitely an entertaining one in that it’s a big silly stupid mess with all sorts of weird, disjointed sequences all set to the jaunty, peppy music of Burt Bacharach. You just have to be in the right frame of mind (possibly drug-addled) to appreciate it.

And speaking of the music... IMO, the Look of Love is one of the best songs ever from a Bond movie, official or unofficial.

MGM has been fairly mum about 4K discs, sure they've done plenty of 4K remasters but no word on discs. If going by past releases, they could probably do 4K physical releases by Bond 25 but since that has been pushed back (supposedly) who knows when we'd get 4K. I know that the Bond films have been released in 4K on iTunes but I don't know how they compare to the old Blus.

I remember Craig saying something about he and Mendes missing the routine of watching dailies everyday and the look of film in general. Craig said something about not seeing the point of shooting digital if you're just trying to make it look like film anyway.

EDIT: I think it was during the Charlie Rose interview the two of them did together -- https://charlierose.com/videos/23168

Ooh nice article, thanks. I knew it wasn't because of Hoytema. He'd already shot Her digitally and I don't remember him bad-mouthing the format (but I didn't like that movie at all so I didn't dig into it too much).
