In the past 3 months, I've gone from being someone who mostly dismissed digital copies (having a few on iTunes and the rest through DMA) to someone that is fairly obsessed with the idea of building my digital collection. I have close to 300 titles on Vudu (by redeeming the codes from all my movies, and buying one that is exclusively digital-only) and I'm contemplating disc-to-digital for several of my Blu-rays/DVDs. It was a quick transformation indeed.

Oh, but digital still doesn't replace Blu-ray in quality. It's more of a supplement to it for now. Eventually it will, though. I'm okay with that thought, as long as I never get that digital content taken away. It beats disc rot at least.

Is Blu ray better than the digital copies (iTunes), where picture and sound quality are concerned?

No. Not at all.

I didn't think so. Are Blu-ray's primarily aimed at collector's nowadays?

I believe your experience will be the norm in the coming years. As for me, it might be time for me to really consider moving away from the idea of movie ownership. I've been collecting movies since the VHS days. The idea of buying a movie over and over is getting old. I've gotten most of my "Holy Grails" on Blu-ray. And while this thread has been surprisingly hot, there really isn't anything new under the sun as far as Bond is concerned except for the digital versions and some new features plopped onto the Amazon exclusive. Yeah. While I'm not quite fading to black yet as far as collecting is concerned, I can see I'm in the third act.

He was being sarcastic. Nothing digital, download or streaming, holds a candle to BD.

It won't always be so, but blu-ray definitely wins in terms of quality now. There's also a pretty big disparity in special features (particularly commentary), streaming pushes limits with bandwidth limits with ISPs, etc.

All that said, digital is certainly the future. I find it much more convenient. I'm watching the Brosnan Bond movies right now. Even though the blu-rays are sitting on my desk, I'm watching on Vudu because 1) I could watch one of them on the plane and 2) I can easily stop and start where I left off, which works well when I don't have a big block of time to watch. Then there's the matter of all that space physical media takes up. I'd much rather be a digital hoarder than deal with shelves and boxes and cases.

Please also tell me, in some of the Bond 50 blurays the special features were upscaled to hd (blurays from 2008) and on the rest, the features are on sd (blurays added on 2012 to complete the Bond 50).

Are now all the special features upscaled to Hd or not?

Since ordering the white box I got a price back for the black one... £72! Would have been tempted, but still happy with what I paid for the other one, especially as the UK one contains the UV codes.

(Not singling you out, just that you brought up some points I wanted to address)

I get the convenience with digital, I really do, but I have only so much time devoted to watching a movie, I never started doing it as a means to pass time. It's a small ritual, watching a movie in one sitting on the big canvas. My player can easily handle remembering where I stopped in case I do have to break the viewing in half. There is no point (for me) watching a movie on a smaller screen than my 46" TV. Since I got the projector all movies have been screened there instead. For shows, digital makes more sense to me, as I watch them both on 117" canvas, 46" and my 24" monitors. Blu-ray stays on the canvas; other sources I do all three.

Physical taking up space? I have a wall shelf for all the Criterion BDs. And a single book case that holds the rest of my BDs and DVDs. I like to see my collection on the shelves. Same with CDs. I have 3 more book case units that can hold more movies, but I doubt I'll ever fill them. I've seen some people with impressive collections, but they made a choice to be collectors, my collection is fairly small.

Has anyone seen the single releases (half-white/half-picture cover) anywhere in stores? Do they come with slips? I have seriously only seen the actor collections at Target and 9 "Spectre" themed single films at Walmart/BB in steelbook.

People who pay to download movies need to be punched in the face.

Why some people doesn't understand that hd digital copies are not only for phones, tablets or pc? With Roku, apple tv, etc, I can watch movies on my projector with near bluray quality. Don't get me wrong, I love bd (I have over 700), but is very cool to visit relatives and be able to watch a movie from my collection in their HD set or home theaters without having to bring them with me.

Yes, it's very convenient. Except I went to a friends house the other day his internet connection was so bad we couldn't even stream SD on Vudu.

No one is saying that it isn't convenient. If I want to watch a movie outside my HC setup, I would mind streaming it. But the best experience and quality is still the physical disc.

The last thing I want do when I visit family and friends is sit down and watch tv at their place, I do plenty of that at home and would rather actually spend time with them doing other things. Besides, my setup is better than that of anyone else I know, so if we do want to watch something together it would be at my place.

I like having my movies being displayed on my selves too. Especially those collectible blu-rays, they stand out among the normal ones and make my friends envy me. But I collect only those I really want to keep. There are many good movies out there that are not in my collection.

A nice surprise: the digital copy of Casino Royale is the uncut version. It has all of the scenes cut from the bathroom and stairwell fights. The blu-ray disc (from the Amazon black box edition) still has the edited US version.

Pretty cool!
