I mean, if we could've had John Barry scores in perpetuity, I'd have opted for that, but in the real world, it's nice to hear what different composers bring to the table. The same could be said for directors, cinematographers, and indeed the Bonds themselves.

One example would be Michael Kamen's score for Licence to Kill. He does his workmanlike best in films like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon; on the evidence of that, I never would have guessed that he'd be capable of writing such a dramatic (and tonally appropriate) piece of music for the gunbarrel sequence, or for some of the film's darker moments. It's not a CD I listen to regularly, granted, but in the movie I think it works like gangbusters.

In the discussion about Bond films that are "helped or hurt by musical score", I think Goldeneye comes out pretty well. It's certainly not hurt like The Spy Who Loved Me, nor is it helped like A View to a Kill or The Man with the Golden Gun. Let's just say that this is definitely not a series in which "quality of score" lines up with "quality of movie".
I'm glad there were a few Bond films here and there that departed from John Barry doing the music. It was refreshing to hear someone's efforts and although some of those are the most dated of the series (LALD, TSWLM) I wouldn't change a thing as they are much a part of the film's identity as anything else. That goes for Goldeneye too, though I'm also not all that crazy about the film itself, though all this discussion in the news about Russian hackers has put the image in my mind of Boris Grishenko toiling away at his computer referring to the Americans as slugheads.

Forgetting the Rolleiflex tape recorder, and Kerim Bey's toy underneath the Soviet embassy.

In Dr No, Bond got a Geiger counter via diplomatic pouch. I know, that's reaching a bit....

Whilst I don't hate it I do think that Serra's score sounds too much like the scores he did for other films around that time.

I keep expecting Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich to appear at any moment.

I really like Serra's score for Leon (which probably got him the Bond assignment.) but Goldeneye is really a hit and miss affair. That post opening credits cue (Ladies First) is just terrible. And what a missed opportunity to not include the title song Goldeneye as an instrumental somewhere in the score.

Yeah the score is very inconsistent. When it sounds Bondesque it's good but when Serra's doing his own thing it's terrible.

I love the score to death but I do agree it lacks the reprise of the main theme that most Bond scores have. That's kind of faded in general in the Brosnan and Craig era though, I don't think that's on Serra. The funny thing is that of course Leon's score ties into the intended end song which got moved to be Goldeneye's end song.

I find when buying something like Bond, Star Wars, Star Trek etc, they are all released so often, all you need to do is buy a version that you like the packaging of, that way it is likely to stay on your shelf longer and you'll be more willing to buy the new films individually to add on to an existing good looking box than worrying about s new set each time it comes out.

I don't have digital copies of the films, but likely that all future releases will have them and you always get someone on ebay selling a uv code so you may be able to get the digital versions that way.

I've had my ebay listings deleted on me for trying to sell uv codes ($2ea w/ free shipping). the excuse was the fine print on uv codes say not for resale. I even tried to give them away free & charge $2 shipping & again deleted. this time threatened with a banned account.

sold some on craigslist for awhile, then that dried up. couldn't even sell them for $1ea

You can sell codes on the Trading Forum on this site without any problems. Ebay is such a farce these days. The restriction is not so much the "not for resale" fine print (they have no problem with you selling DVDs from a combo pack which also have that fine print) but that you are not selling something tangible. Still, even if you put a listing for a piece of paper with a code printed on it and even state you will send the paper in the mail, the employees at Ebay are as dumb as a sack of hammers they'll cancel the listings anyway.

I've the Uncensored/Unedited Criterion LD commentary tracks for DR. NO (50.5MB), From Russia with Love (52.7MB), and GOLDFINGER (50.4MB) I could upload. Then I'd share the links to those interested in PM. All three are MP3 though.
Cause LD is dead.

thanks for the option. my new job affords me to being able to watch vudu on my laptop while @ work when its slow. so I keep the codes now. I'm able watch a couple of movies a week while on the clock during the winter months.

having only seen Goldeneye several times when it was new, then replaced the dvd copy in 2012 for the Bronson bluray set. I'm a noob to when it comes to the Bond films.

I have a slight ocd to when it comes to packaging. I wont buy any so-called complete set unless it is truly complete ie: all episodes/films. I dislike mismatch sets, ito me it hodge podged.

so when it comes to me buying Bond, I will be buying the actor sets of it as those are truly complete & the cases look like a master set when on the shelf. while I understand more movies will come out & the box may changed. it wont look as bad as a box set with extra discs sitting on the outside. I started w/ Connery vol. 1 & 2 2015. then I'll go from there.

I also like the actor sets because they have actual plastic cases w/ individual disc spots. I dislike paper cases or cases that stack discs. (lethal weapon & married w/ children), had to buy replacement cases to fix those problems.

Won't you have to disrupt those sets by including the stand-alone On Her Majesty's Secret Service? Don't know where you stand on the non-Eon productions of Never Say Never Again or the 1967 Casino Royale, I know some fans disregard them.

OHMSS has a release that matches the actor's sets:

Do you know if it's the same master as Hulu 1080p? I'll take a look at 1080p when I get home.

Yeah, the master from Hulu is not DNR'd like the Blu-ray. Comparing the caps-a-holic shots to Hulu W10 App there is more detail in the low bitrate stream than the Blu-ray.

The BD uses a weird older master in some lame attempt to avert a minor issue the DVD had or something. It's been discussed. Goldeneye on BD is very much a fluke which is why it comes up all the time as a highly desired remaster.
