How do you organize your collection?

Yep, except I do not have DVD's.

I start my collection with James Bond, then go numerical, alphabetical (except with series. I do the same thing you do).

I can't decided to organize them all alphabetically or if I should keep some movies with franchises.

Examples:

• The Dark Knight Trilogy are Batman movies, should I just put them with the other Batman movie?
• Should I keep the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe together and just put them in my "M" section for the MCU?
• Is LEGO Star Wars: The Padawan Menace a LEGO or Star Wars movie?

Oh, what a fickle. Suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I currently have my movies organized by production year. Works out great with guests. Rather than searching a for a movie, they go straight to the front and usually with in the first 20 blus it's "oh I wanted to see this, never got a chance."

The way I incorporate multiple movies is, I'll put Furious 7, followed by 6 - 1. Jurassic world, followed by 3 - 1.
When I organized alphabetically. I did the same. Batman under b then the other two movies. Die hard under d then followed the rest.

I'd put lego with lego, even if it is star wars.

I currently have my movies arranged exactly as I have my collection organized in this website. It works great as I can just look at my collection here and decide what I want to watch. Then I know exactly where it is on the shelf.

If you walked around in my downstairs living room, then you would never realize that I'm a big movie fan, save for the 49" 4K television and soundbar.

I'll get some flaming here for this, but big Blu-ray/DVD collections can be pretty unsightly when displayed in the open on a big shelf. I mean, seriously...the sight of hundreds of nondescript blu Amaray cases on shelves can be an eyesore. The movies themselves may look wonderful on Blu-ray, but Blu-ray cases themselves do not look particularly wonderful.

It's no more difficult for me to look through my bins, especially now that I know where the movies are by genre, than it would be for me to find them on a big shelf.

I might buy or build shelves for the walk-in closet someday, or I might buy or build shelves in my extra bedroom someday, but I'd rather bide my time and have something really nice.

The Blu-rays go into the bins depending on what genre they fall into. Whenever I run out of space for a particular genre, I simply buy a new bin from Target (I'm going to need to add a fourth film noir bin soon, because I've only got space for one more movie in my third film noir bin.).

I may or may not put the Blu-rays on shelves someday, but I'm pretty picky about my furniture, and I dislike the cheap fake-wood stuff from chain stores. I also don't like to have clutter in my living room, because I like for guests to feel at ease. I do keep four bins in a wooden chest in the living room, but those are full of movies that guests generally like to watch if they visit (James Bond movies, Star Wars movies, Stand By Me, Indiana Jones movies, Casablanca, etc.).

That's pretty ugly. I'd rather my stuff be out there in the open. It adds to the room. Makes it look better.

Oh, I never claimed that my plastic bins were pretty. Haha. That's why they're in the closet. I like the efficiency of my system, though, because I can simply add movies to my bins by genre without ever having to rearrange the order on a shelf. They're also dry and dust-free all of the time.

I have six primary arrangements:
(1) Criterion Collection - by spine #
(2) Director sets - Alphabetical by Director
(3) Franchise movie sets - Alphabetical by movie series
(4) TV Series/sets - Alphabetical by series title
(5) Children/Animated - Alphabetical by title
(6) All other blu-ray titles - Alphabetical by title

Alphabetical for the movies, although, I've gotten a little lazy and have put several at the end because I've been too lazy to move everything to make room for new titles.

Blu Rays are TV Shows first, then music, followed by wrestling. Then most watched blue rays are next. Then they are broken up into genes, comic book or superhero movies first, then action, next is horror. then comedy, and lastly drama.

The dark knight trilogy should be alphabetized " Batman " and should also be placed after the Burton films.

Marvel should be alphabetized individually. " Iron-Man " in I, "Thor" in T etc.

Lego Star Wars should NOT be alphabetized in with films but rather after with other TV / Music shows.

By genre, and working my way down from there. Historical drama comes before contemporary drama, but depending on which time period it takes place in, it might go somewhere between. However, because I have so few of those along with fantasy and western, I kind of sort them together in the manner that makes most sense to me.

Meanwhile I have loads of sci-fi and horror and I sort them by subgenre; I have a whole shelf just for superheroes and monster films like Superman or Godzilla.

I have an absurd amount of sorting rules really, but alphabetical is not one of them.

I originally had them organized first by genre and then alphabetical. After a while the sight of different style of cases became unsightly to me so I transitioned to arraigning them first by studio and then alphabetically. I've also separated my slipcovered cases from nonslip covered.

I don't like the way it looks in bins at all. But hey, it's your house and whatever works for YOU, that's the way it is.

I think if one has the room and that's the way they prefer it (me), displaying all your blus in all their glory is the way to go. I have an entire room dedicated to all my blus. Once someone lays their eyes upon my displayed collection, they literally freak. They absolutely love it but not as much as I do.

Stick to your guns owl as it's your house and your taste.

One of these days I'll post some pics of my media room. We'll see.

There are some ways I get around this. For one, I print custom cases. Don't want to split up your Marvel movies, but want to keep them in alphabetical order? Ask some of those nice people in the cover art thread for a cover and get a Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase One cover. With Ant Man out today, you can have the Phase Two version now too!

How you organize it after that is up to you. I'm probably going to just put everything MCU(Daredevil, AoS, Agent Carter, Jessica Jones, all the films, and whatever else they come up with in the future) all the way at the front just because there is simply nothing else like it in terms of the variety and amount of content that coexist.

You can do a similar thing with all franchises. Print yourself a Batman trilogy cover and put it right there with everything else Batman.

The Lego example I wouldn't even know. With the amount of Lego films, I'd probably keep everything lego together.

Here are a few examples of my setup that is in order alphabetically with exceptions... I have TV first first, movies second, all blu ray

I put Prometheus(and AvP, but those don't matter) right before all of my Alien movies because they exist in the same universe and it occurs prior.
I have Serenity after Firefly with my tv shows. It is a direct continuation.
The Battlestar Galactica films throughout the show(they happen before and throughout).
Everything Star Trek together. I believe it can all be considered the same universe, right?

I like the idea of dry and dust free. What are the dimensions of the storage boxes you use? Did you try different sizes?
