To elaborate on my earlier post, I store and organize my Blu-rays these plastic bins from Target that I keep in a walk-in closet.
The Blu-rays go into the bins depending on what genre they fall into. I have seven horror bins, three film noir bins, two neo-noir bins, two western bins, three science fiction/fantasy bins, two 1980s comedy bins, one war bin, one classic comedy bin, two "guy movie" action bins, five Criterion bins, four classic drama/romance/adventure bins, a contemporary drama/romance/adventure bin, an exploitation/grindhouse bin, two digibook bins, and, finally, a James Bond bin. The great thing about these bins is that my Blu-rays gather no dust. They are also easy to sift through, since I can see through the clear lids. Finally, these bins provide an easy way to add new Blu-rays to my collection, since I can simply put new purchases into their respective bins according to their movie genres instead of shifting my entire collection around on a frequent basis if the movies were stored alphabetically. Whenever I run out of space for a particular genre, I simply buy a new bin from Target (I'm going to need to add a fourth film noir bin soon, because I've only got space for one more movie in my third film noir bin.). I may or may not put the Blu-rays on shelves someday, but I'm pretty picky about my furniture, and I dislike the cheap fake-wood stuff from chain stores. I also don't like to have clutter in my living room, because I like for guests to feel at ease. I do keep four bins in a wooden chest in the living room, but those are full of movies that guests generally like to watch if they visit (James Bond movies, Star Wars movies, Stand By Me, Indiana Jones movies, Casablanca, etc.). ![]() Last edited by The Great Owl; 12-07-2015 at 01:22 AM. |

Alphabetically, but then I have "series" separate and those are chronological. So for example I have all Marvel movies on a separate shelf chronologically, Disney classics by year of release, etc. And then there are series of just a few movies you HAVE to put together chronologically together on their own or to wouldn't make sense. Example: Not just Bond and DC animated films, but like the Hannibal trilogy (Red Dragon-Silence-Hannibal) and Dawn/Rise of Planet of the Apes. I'll post pictures sometime, it makes more sense when you see my layout but I'm sure everyone else is the same way.

BDs then DVDs all in alphabetical order, with series in chronological order. I keep movies and TV show seperate.
I also group all the movies from Hammer Films, Amicus Productions, and the movies based on Marvel characters together seprately on the shelves. Mainly because those three are all in custom covers with (somewhat) uniform spines and I like the look. |

![]() I do not have a specific link at Target online, since I usually just buy these in the store, but here is the product information so that any of you who want them can look around online... ![]() |

I've pretty much resorted to this as well. I don't really like to store movies right out in the open in normal condition living spaces (living room, bedroom, etc). Right now I have movies in both drawers and plastic bins, but ideally I'd like to eventually build some shelving to store them in a spare room that will become more of a dedicated media room.

![]() I am running out of space actually but I really do have the vast majority that I actually want to keep already. No, really! ![]() The thought of lots of blu-rays hiding in big ugly plastic boxes....just no. What would happen in that case is that none of them would ever get watched again. Out of sight - out of mind. |

I like to have a spacious open area in my downstairs living room, though, instead of having it cluttered up with big shelves and hundreds of Blu-rays. If you walked around in my downstairs living room, then you would never realize that I'm a big movie fan, save for the 49" 4K television and soundbar. I'll get some flaming here for this, but big Blu-ray/DVD collections can be pretty unsightly when displayed in the open on a big shelf. I mean, seriously...the sight of hundreds of nondescript blu Amaray cases on shelves can be an eyesore. The movies themselves may look wonderful on Blu-ray, but Blu-ray cases themselves do not look particularly wonderful. It's no more difficult for me to look through my bins, especially now that I know where the movies are by genre, than it would be for me to find them on a big shelf. I might buy or build shelves for the walk-in closet someday, or I might buy or build shelves in my extra bedroom someday, but I'd rather bide my time and have something really nice.
