Organized stuff goes on shelves... everything else sits in stacks until I have time to get to them.

I used to have it all alphabetical first movies then TV including documentaries. The exceptions were:
  • Concert/music titles which had their own shelf
  • multipacks that had no title continuity such as a Sci-fi 3pack
  • editions which did not fit into existing shelving due to height like DVD sized packaging or digibooks due to my shelves being BD height

Now that I've gone over 1,500 titles I need a slightly altered layout since it's hard for guests to find anything amoung my 3 shelves. So in addition to the above I've got:
  • A new release section with unwatched movies
  • A childrens section for the neice and nephew
  • 3D Documentaries followed by 2D documentaries
  • Now I am piloting movie collections by action star. So far I've created a Chuck Norris section but will continue with Van Damme, Steven Segal & probably Stallone. I feel bad for relegating Stallone to this status. This section was created due to me not being able to remember the title of a Chuck Norris movie that I was wanted to watch solely for him.

I do like the idea of classics and may do that as well. Most people aren't usually in the mood to watch Casablanca unless it's on their mind.

Go first listed, name on the left.
Of course it would be name on the right if in Japan.

Many people are so creative and ingeniously on how they organize their movies.

I'm not and I'm lazy.... I have 3 shelves.
1 for the slipcovers, 1 without the slipcover, and 1 steelbooks/digibooks. Boxsets are at the very top and bottom of the shelves LOL
They sort of uniformed....

I would never do studio or label because that's not why I watch films. I've been tempted to sort by directors or genre, but I have too many films by just one director and many films are a combination of genres. So alphabetical it stays.

I organize alphabetically. It is easier to find movies that way. I can browse by genre on my iPad app. First post by the way. Lurking on this forum has cost me much money over the years.

I use My Movies Pro. It works well enough, does what I need it to do, and can be used between my phone and tablet.

I use My Movies as well and I put the movie trailers in there since I have a pretty big collection and it's a pain to look through when guests want to watch something. I can show them the trailer if they're unsure as well.

Default Better Organization of Movies

Greetings All,
I have lots of movies sorted by horror, action, etc.., but when I get a new movie or double-dip on a movie, I don't know where to put it since my shelves (let’s say horror) is full already of movies. It is that I have about 3 different Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies (the 1st one) and when a new one comes out (like an Anniversary Edition) I buy it. BUT my row with those movies are on is already full and just don't know where to put it because it is my 1st row that is full and all of my other rows below are full already.

Just don't know where to put this or how to organize it better. I would like to put all my movies together. Can anyone give any ideas or thoughts on what I can do?

Thanks, greatly appreciate it!

How do you put your blu-ray.com collection into categories? Mine are all just alphabetical, and I would like to organize my database by genre. Can anyone more knowledgeable talk me through it?

when you pull up your collection at the top there will be text that reads "| Manage categories |". Through there you will be able to make what ever categories you'd like to organize by. Then it's just a matter of going through and reassigning your movies into their desired category. It takes a little to set up at first but well worth it. Let me know if that doesn't make sense and I'll try to be a little more specific.

400 BD-Rs? I hope that doesn't mean what I think it means.

It's actually quite easy thanks to your help. Thank you very much.

Now, is Jurassic Park Action or Science Fiction? Hmmmm...

Oh, the way I organize my collection is AMAZING.

You see, except for a few cool collector's cases, I toss the cases and put my discs into a binder. There is no real rhyme or reason to how they are sorted, but I try to put a similar theme on a page of sleeves.

Finally, discs I haven't watched yet I keep in a pile, or several piles, somewhere in the room.

Your welcome for this insight into collection organization.

Recently reorganized the films in my collection to be by studio and by descending amount (Universal/DreamWorks Animation has 50+ altogether, Disney has 37, Warner has 32, etc.)
The TV shows and specials are, for the most part, organized by what company produced them or what channel they aired on. I didn't reorganize them though.
