How do you organize your collection?

I place mine in alphabetical order. Makes it easier to find the title that I am looking to watch.

My collection is organized chronologically based on original theatrical release date, so the oldest film I have (1933's King Kong) is first and the 2013 titles are at the end. Foreign films are arranged by their release date in their own country (i.e. Fistful of Dollars would be under its Italian release date in 1964 and not 1967). The box sets I have are at the very end and act as bookends when the shelf isn't completely full.

When I buy new titles, I keep them aside until I have a good half dozen or so then put them in the correct spots and move everything down accordingly. It does mean reorganizing a lot, but it does give me the chance to check everything out, fondle the cases a bit ( ) and maybe weed out a title or two that I no longer want, etc. When I do this, my wife tells me that I'm spending time with my mistress.

I have an Excel spreadsheet of all my movies with their prices, etc. for insurance purposes so I just use that to keep track of the release dates too.

Might seem asinine, but i like the way it looks. I hate having uneven cases beside each other and I like having spines that match.

I have a lot of titles that don't fit on the shelves right now. But mainly alphabetical, though franchises stay together.

The Criterions have a separate area, alphabetically within Blu and within DVD.

I had a separate foreign language section (excluding Criterions) for DVDs but not sure I'll do that with Blus when I eventually reorganize.

Yep. I tried it once but ran into the same problem. Mine are alphabetized, 007`s are together under B for Bond. All animated films are last and also alphabetized. For some reason, I don't like having animated films mixed in with live action.

Mine have to go in a binder now because my daughter loved to rip them off the shelves.

I keep them in alphabetical order but its a pain to have to rearrange for new purchases.

Grouped by director. Groups sorted by quantity of films. Groups of the same quantity sorted chronologically, by the oldest film in the group. Films within each director group also sorted chronologically. So, for instance, my top shelf starts with my twenty Hitchcock films sorted chronologically (starting with the 1934 'The Man Who Knew Too Much'), then my Keaton collection, then my Lang collection (both 8 films, I think), then my 7 Kurosawa films, and so on.

It sounds complicated and confusing, but it works and it looks cool.

I'm starting to think its a bad idea. can I get a recommendation on whether or not I need to put them together I do not want to damage them

I used to do this until the day i opened a sealed BD and the case was empty. contacted amazon UK and they replaced it without issue but ya never know.

I always open right away too, just to check everything out and make sure it's not damage. It has to be opened anyway in order to watch it.

Main shelves:
Oversized box sets on top.
Movies/TV Movies- Alphabetically
TV Shows & Miniseries- Alphabetically

All BDs & DVDs mixed together

Smaller Shelves:
Doctor Who: Chronologically Seasons 1-26 to Series 1-7, Cushing Movies, then spin-offs.
DVDs, CDs, and BDs, when applicable.

I organize my movies alphabetically. I separate my BD's and my DVD's, because I have my blu-ray player in a different room.

I used to have a substantial movie and video game backlog but either sold them or opened them to enjoy. I felt a bit silly having games or even movies sitting unopened on the shelf that were now dirt cheap to buy new.

I have mine alphabetically, with tv shows first, then movies.
I'm curious, what do some of you guys do when it comes to movies with a different name, but may also be a prequel/spin off, or even a direct sequel?

For example, Avengers and all the tie-ins, like Iron Man/Thor/Captain America?
I've kept these separate myself, but I've thought about a few times actually putting them together, since they're connected.

Or what about something less connected, like Prometheus to the Alien series?
Or along with that, the Predator/Alien series and the AvP movies?

The only exception I have in my collection, is I have Serenity right after Firefly in my TV section.

Though I've been thinking about numerous different series' and movies that may fit better together, but I don't know if I should move them or not.

Or even for some who don't have the Batman trilogy, do you put Batman Begins along with your other two Dark Knight movies?

No one could understand my organization but me, Mine is by genre then actor - then year for instance Eastwood western to Hackman Western to Costner Western etc. then Random westerns by year.

I'm a completist when it comes to certain directors, therefore mine are organized by director and release year.
Example: Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs comes first and Django Unchained is the last. Then you got all the Hitchcock's, all the Godard's and so on.

Movies from directors I don't collect everything from are just organized by genre.

Disney, Criterions and TV shows stand alone as well, except when a Criterion title is by a director of which I collect everything from.
Example: Paths of Glory isn't whith the other Criterions, it's with the Kubrick movies.

And all my film-series stand also by another, unless a series is by a certain director.
Example: LotR is next to Star Wars. Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones are with the Spielberg's.

Sounds more difficult than it is.

First and foremost, DVDs are separated from blu-rays, then TV is separated from film. My TV section combines DVD & blu-ray in alphabetized format. If I own a series or season in both formats, DVD is alphabetized first, then the same titles in blu-ray.

In film, DVD and blu-ray are separately organized and displayed. DVDs are alphabetized regardless of packaging (steelbook, etc.). My blu-rays are alphabetized with the exception of digibooks, which come at the end of my collection in alphabetical format. I have thought about separating my steelbooks and Criterion titles as well, and will probably do so once I get enough of each. I own less than a dozen of each, I don't feel it's worthwhile to switch my display until I get at least twice as many titles of either format.
