I organize my collection of 3,000-ish Blu-rays and DVDs by format, then alphabetical order. I used to organize them by genre, then alphabetical order but I was finding that a little difficult to find stuff at times (some titles can be classified as science fiction or action or even horror). Not to mention the obvious size differences between a standard DVD case and Blu-ray case just looked odd on my shelves. In the end I found format and alphabetizing is the best form of organization out there for cinema.

Note: Every September I do pull out every horror related title to stack near my TV for my annual 31 Days of Horror marathon. But even then I use IMDb to see what qualifies as horror for a lot of titles (some I personally don't agree with; e.g. Alien (1979) should be Sci-Fi not Horror).

I keep mine alphabetical. I also have the steelbooks/digibooks and 3D films separate from the regular ol' Blus.

I have my collection in alphabetical order starting with Blu-Rays (sort by numbers, films and TV Shows) and then DVDs (again sorted the same way).

These are a few exceptions to the rule:

All titles in a franchise stay together (sorted according to timeline, unless number specifically)
A few examples:

Batman: Batman: The Movie/Batman/Batman Returns/Batman Forever/Batman & Robin/Batman Begins/The Dark Knight/The Dark Knight Rises

Alien: Prometheus/Alien Quadrilogy

X-Men: X-Men - First Class/X-Men Origins: Wolverine/X-Men/X2/X3

Slight exception below:
James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing (docu)/Casino Royale (67)/Never Say Never Again (83)/Official Bond (in release order)

I keep crossovers together
A few examples here:

Freddy vs Jason: A Nightmare on Elm Street, ANoES (remake), Freddy vs Jason, Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th (remake)

Alien vs Predator: Prometheus/Alien Quadrilogy/AvP 1 & 2/Predator/Predator 2/Predators

Avengers: The Avengers/Captain America/Incredible Hulk/Iron Man/Iron Man 2/Iron Man 3/Thor

For the future:
I am seriously considering moving TV shows into their own section and combining Blus and DVDs. I recently purchased the Family Guy: Star Wars boxset and really feel the need to move it over to my Volume sets (which are only available on DVD) to keep the Family Guy collection together.

What do you guys do regarding TV shows that have different formats?

By TV Shows, Steelbooks, Digibooks, boxsets, all other movies. but they're all in ABC order (if it's a movie franchise and one movie starts with a different letter of the alphabet it will NOT be with the others which is a little annoying and why I will buy a boxset if available.) then it's Disney, Disney Nature, and Studio Ghibli all in ABC order.

Default How do you organize your movies?

I couldn't find a thread for this question. If this already been asked...my apologies. The mods can relocate if necessary.

I was curious how you organize movies on your shelves. Alphabetically, by genre, or by collections such as James Bond movies, or other series of movies.

I used to do mine alphabetically, but it was a hassle to keep straight. So, I began grouping them by collections such as all the Trek movies, X-men, Disney, and so on. Much easier to manage.

Default I organize my film library...

Alphabetically (regular, digibook, steelbook, television and films), together and neatly stored (either 'spined', or in some cases 'faced' out) within oak cases custom designed for media (blu-ray/DVD) storage.

I don't separate by genre because too many people (friends and family) would look in the oddest spots for certain films.

I was actually considering going by directors, but then my wife would strangle me ...and being strangled is, most certainly, not conducive to one's overall enjoyable home-theatrical experience.

PS - I also abide by the sequel rule, hence "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" will be located under 'R' (directly following "Raiders of the Lost Ark") - And uh no, that BS retitling scramble to call the film "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" doesn't fly (at least with me).

Alphabetical, does not matter if it is a Digi-Book, DVD, Blu-Ray, Box Set, TV Series, or Criterion... Alphabetical.. 100%.

And yes that means having all those types mixed together, since it's not likely that most if not all older TV shows will ever make the switch to any format other then DVD.

Some of the DVD movies in my collection (or on my wish list) may never see the light of Blu-Ray or future superior format, so the likelihood is I will always have a few strays from older formats.

And the easiest way for me and everyone else in my household to find a movie they want is to mix them all and alphabetize them..... done.

With my DVD collection, it was by genre, but with converting over to Blu-rays as titles came out, I've been keeping things alphabetical. But, I am getting close to going back as I think I'm pushing 550 titles now. My DVD collection is down to about 50 or so titles left and waiting for Blu-ray releases.

lol. It's really part of my collection. Yes many of them are still sealed. Almost all of my Criterions and Twilight Times are sealed and they are in that picture. Plus I reseal most of the ones I watch in these bags.

Sorted by the middle name of the supporting actor/actress like most people.
Actually, alphabetically. If I get a big enough collection, it will be be genre, then alphabetically.

I hate doing genre because every once in a while I'll run into a title that doesn't fit one particular too simply.

Blu's alphabetical, then DVD.
