My collection just started, and has been focused on sci-fi, Cronenberg, and a selection of titles for my wife.
The sci-fi is chronological from King Kong to Rise of the Planet of the Apes with most of it focused on 1968-1990. Boxed sets get inserted at the date of the first film. This will change as the collection gets larger. Even now Conan and Jaws are mixed in there. |

Strict ABC, but since I get a lot of browsers I have now split into three shelves; one for just kids/animation, one for R films, and one for the PG-13/regular films. I thought it would bother me at first but I enjoy it now since I don't feel bad about having the younger browsers see horror movies on the same shelf as disney movies.

Mine is purely alphabetical at the moment, though with some series filed under their parent name (Bond movies, Batman movies, etc.).
I've been thinking about putting some director catalogs in a row, recently. Stuff like Tarantino and Carpenter seems like it wants to be all lined up. I haven't bit the bullet yet because I assume it will make the movies harder to grab quickly, which seems like a bad idea. I keep thinking about it though. |

I do mine by Genre, in alphabetical order.
Action/Adventure Crime Drama/Thrillers Horror/SciFi Digibooks, Steelbooks, Collectors Packaging, TV Shows are on one shelf or on display. I need to go through the Drama and Thrillers and separate them, for some reason I can't decide on what really goes where with those genres. Action and Adventure seem to all go together and not enough Horror and SciFi to make them separate. |

Disney Animation on one shelf... Everything else is alphabetical. DVD's are separated onto their own shelves. Once I finish my basement I plan on getting more shelving and organizing by genre - > Alphabetically.
My ultimate goal however is to grow my collection into the thousands and eventually devote a spare bedroom into my collection space. I'd like to organize my films in such a way that it resembles a video store from the 90's. |

I try to organize my movie collection mostly by color. I like the dark-colored cases to go together and the whites to go together and the reds and the grays and so on and so forth.
...I find it looks better on the book shelf. Then when possible, depending on the results of the color coordination, I try to put different genres together. I never really cared for alphabetical order or spine numbers or anything like that. |

How would that require you to collect them all? Unless you have OCD, but if you do I doubt organizing them chronological would do anything.
