Most of my remaining DVD's happen to be films or Documentaries which haven't been properly released on Blu-Ray yet, so doing this allows me to 'mix' them in alphabetically amongst my Main Blu-Ray Collection while keeping a 'uniform' look to everything. Here are a few examples of how some of them turned out.

I know that it might seem just a tad extreme, but the side-by-side comparisons usually don't turn out too bad. (Especially when they're 'interspersed' throughout the Collection as a whole.)

Here is a what ARMAGEDDON looks like as a trimmed-down DVD next to it's Blu-Ray counterpart after I upgraded the film.

I sort by slipless blu-rays, blu-rays with slipcovers, TV shows, Disney/Pixar, Box sets/special oversized editions, steelbooks, Plain Archive, then Criterion. Each of those category's blu-rays are organized alphabetically.

I want to make a section for comic book media, but a lot of it is spread out between different kinds of packaging so it would probably look weird.

Now, that is a great idea. And, it looks a lot better than I thought it would. At least using your method would make everything uniform and really help out with having a constant shelf height. I like your method even better because now I have to keep my dvd`s on one side and blu-rays on the other.

I still think that it's a great idea too, but sadly I feel that you and I are probably in the minority.

For anyone who happens to be familiar with the FILM JUNK Podcast, (I freakin' love that show!) they actually discussed the topic quite 'in-depth' on two of their Shows earlier this year during their "Junk Mail" segment (where they respond to listener e-mails).

I'd written in to get their opinion on the subject and...well...let's just say that their response was...'less than favorable'. ;-) (To put it kindly.)

For anyone who's curious, they read & respond to my letter, (and also to my follow-up 'response letter') on Episodes #550 and #551 of the Program. (On Episode #550 they begin discussing it at approximately the 1 hour 50 minute mark.) :-)

I remember listening to that discussion (I knew what their responses would be), but you just encouraged me to listen again.

Yeah, I kind of knew what they were gonna say too, which is what made listening to them so much fun!

Currently my main collection is organised alphabetically including TV shows. I have all my Arrow Video/Academy titles on a separate shelf organised alphabetically also. And all my Marvel superhero films on their own, organised chronologically from Blade to X-Men Apocalypse. I've also got my 88 Italian Collection together, by number order, but they're on the same shelf as the standard blu-rays.

The only problem with alphabetical order is moving all the titles down to make room for new additions, but I leave some space at the end of each shelf so that I don't have to move everything.

I organize mine in three sections currently: Criterions, Eureka [Masters of Cinema] and everything else. Everything includes all my American releases, Arrow, BFI, Artificial Eye, Studio Canal, etc.

Once I buy bigger shelves I think I'll want to separate everything accordingly.

I sort everything by studio and then generally I sort by non-slipcover to slipcover. My gf says it makes things hard to find, but I've been doing this since I've had 20 BDs so it's been easy as I slowly add new titles

Trimming DVD cover for BD-case? Try that with digipacks , steelbooks etc. :P

organizing by genre is impossible for large collections
Looks like 500-600 isnt that large as I've never had any trouble with organizing it by genre. For me it looks infinitely better to have Braveheart next to Kingdom of Heaven and Name of The Rose, than put it between Batman and Casino Royale... And spreading MCU movies alphabetcally through entire collection... Nope.

That's the thing...you don't have to do any type of "trimming or customization" to Digipacks or Steelbooks. They're already the same height as Blu-Rays! Get it? :-)

Which genres did you go with? I recently spent a few days trying to sort my collection by genre... it was harder than I thought it would be due to movies fitting in multiple genres. And now when I look for those movies, I can't remember which section I put them in! First world problems. I still like the idea of sorting by genre (because that's usually what I think about when I pick a movie to watch), but maybe I need to choose different categories. I love reading what other people do!

By format and then alphabetically by title. I'd never find anything otherwise.
