If you get a large enough collection you'll eventually do either genre or alphabetical.

How do you arrange yours e.g genre, alphabetical and why did you choose this?
Also if you have some hd-dvds as well do you mix them or seperate?
I have one shelf specifically for "franchise series" like Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, LOTR, etc. The rest are alphabetical. It's just easier for me that way. I tried genre once but that can be stress-inducing with more than a few films that bridge genres or defy being put into a specific box.

And that's the nice thing about arranging by director alphabetically (with plain index cards w/said director's name printed on them separating the sections)...I don't even have to think about it once I've put them in the correct sections. If I'm in the mood for De Palma, or Hitchcock, or Tim Burton, I just follow the alphabet, and there are all of their movies, neatly arranged from oldest to newest. The only thing that foils my by-director system is if a director makes a film that's part of an established series...unless they make EVERY movie in that series (like Sam Raimi with the Evil Dead films, or Spielberg with Indiana Jones), I have to reluctantly put those films into my Movie Series/Franchise section. Same thing with my Original & Remake section...kind of kills me to not put Robocop, Carrie and The Thing in my Verhoeven, De Palma and Carpenter sections, but it just looks cleaner and more organized to keep both versions of a movie next to each other on the shelf. Then I get into REALLY nitpicky stuff, like...where do I put the Evil Dead remake? It's not really part of the established Raimi series of films, and yet I can't put both into the Original & Remake section, because the remake is only remaking the first movie (and not even mentioning Ash vs. Evil Dead ).The Dawn Of The Dead remake? Can't go with the original, and I don't even own that on Blu-Ray yet, and if I did, it'd go with the other Dead films in my George Romero section.
Hadn't thought of this method...pretty cool.

I used to do alphabetical. But I stopped caring some years ago when I had to keep moving things around for various reasons. So I just take them handfuls at a time, and just put them on the shelf.

I have a little over 200 BDs & DVDs & here's how I have it organized.
My top shelf is for box sets, trilogies & special editions.
I have all super hero movies together, live action & animated.
Then I have a sci-fi section followed by a .. I guess miscellaneous section.
After that I have a small Criterion section, small horror section, more miscellaneous, small animated/anime & then TV/documentary.
It's a work in progress . My media rack has three sections in each row. I probably need to leave some spaces for new pick ups but I need something to hold up the BDs in each section.

Right now I got a weird mish-mash of random titles in some places (some with all entries of a series together), the regular 4K/Blu-Ray combos all together, all of the MCU movies all together, the Mondo Vision LEs all together, all of my Shout/Scream Factory titles together, all of my Arrow Videos together, an entire section dedicated to Batman blu-rays and so forth.

Once I get a new bookshelf, I plan on having an entire row of nothing but steelbooks.

And when titles are in their respective genre, how are they organized? Alphabetical in their genre? Or are they randomly tossed about?

Trouble with organising by genre is that many releases fall into 2 categories. I use alphabetical except for sequels which are placed next to the original film. Makes things easy to find. I also have a seperate shelf for my 3 favourite directors: Argento, Leone and Tarantino.

Aphabetical of course unless it is a franchise. For example, in Action/Adventure I have Batman Begins followed by The Dark Knight and the The Dark Rises.

I stuck to the same order as when they were on the shelves though.
A-Z for most
Bond's together and in order
Westerns
Kung-Fu
Animated
Marvel and comic book films
DVDs work fine in a binder. You might want to be careful about Blurays though. They can get little divots from the sleeve lining in most binders over time with pressure.

I personally wouldn't risk it

I recently ran out of room and put almost anything thicker than a normal case on top of my shelves and put a bunch of horror trash in my closet. I could get a fifth media shelf but it wouldn't be able to stand next to the other four, would have to go elsewhere. Debating it.

That sounds like the type of thing someone pro-digital/anti physical media would use to support their argument :/

Default My way.

I arrange my Blu-ray collection in theatrical release year order. Doesn't matter what genre they are. Only difference is if I own any sequels. For instance, The Terminator sequels, Judgment Day (1991) and Rise of the Machines (2003). I place those two titles right after the original Terminator which was released in 1984.
