I do it the same way but opposite on the sequels. Newer ones followed by older ones. Keeps the newer sequels from being hidden.

I like the idea of chronological but it just seems like it would cause a pain to find anything. Right now for Beverly Hills Cop I know right where to go, but if it was jumbled in with tons of 80's movies I would spend forever looking for it.

You could always divide movies by specific year...1984, say, or '96. For all the movies that don't fit into one of my usual "sections" (animation, alphabetical by director, movie series, original & remake, etc.), I just put them in one big catch-all section, from oldest to newest. Thus, this section begins in the early 40's and runs straight through to 2016. Use index card with each decade and/or year to keep easy track.

I have them by genre- hidden in a steamer trunk coffee table to foil my 2 year-old's designs on them.

Alphabetically, expect for series, which I just put together. So I have one shelf with A-Z single titles; another with Harry Potter, Bond, etc in chronological order along with box sets; and another with comic book titles, separated by marvel and DC, and Disney together at the bottom. No rhyme or reason, whatever looks good and has somewhat of a system.

I've always kept my Blu rays and DVDs in Director/Actor groupings for as long as I can remember in order of original theatrical release as well. Ungrouped stuff gets grouped by genre. Things like film series and TV series are grouped together in respective genres.

Problems arise when you have say Arnie and Cameron movies and where to place T1, T2 and True Lies, usually go with director. But then I have to keep the other Terminator movies with T1 and T2, so it becomes a bit messy.

It all makes sense to me anyway which counts.

I think it comes from my music collection keeping artist's albums together in release order.

First by DVD or Blu-ray, and then by genres.

That way, when I'm in the mood for an animated film or science fiction, I can easily browse all those titles together.

"Genres" include: TV Shows, Scifi, Fantasy, Disney Animated, Non-Disney Animated, Family, Drama, Miyazaki, Shyamalan, Whedon, Superheroes and other smaller subgroupings.

My collection is by no means small but it's certainly not massive - I've never gotten around to cataloging it - so this system works well enough.

Even though it's the most functional for me, I'm getting kind of tired looking at my library in alphabetical order. I was thinking of organizing by studio, since I already have Criterions together, why not do everything by studio (even though that'll break a few franchises up). I'm just looking for something new.

Doing it by genre has always been difficult for me. I'll sit there days on end trying to figure out what genre a title belongs in.

I've done chronological, alphabetically, genre, last year I started with a new system. I keep my favourite directors together, Scorsese, Kubrick, Mann, Lean etc. If I have a lot of BD's from an actor I'll clump them all together. All my Pacino's, Harrison Fords, Tom cruise, Newmans, Redford, Stallones etc. My Criterion, Shout Factory, Kino, Blue Underground, Disney are together. My box sets have their own small bookcase and my TV bluray and DVD collection is separate. I have my "cheesy" movies altogether, 90's action movies like the Rock, Independence Day, etc together and I also have what I call my one offs together, movies like Drive and Nightcrawler. I do have some organized by sub genre like Horror, zombie, Martial arts, comedy, slapstick, SNL and I also have a section for my calibration discs.

I've bought many bookcases, DVD racks in my day I finally settled on the IKEA racks 8 years ago because they fit BD's perfectly, and I can always expand. And I know they will always sell them.

I have shelves for specific genres (horror, superheroes, comedy, franchises, action, sci fi), a shelf for my favorites directors, disney/pixar, anime/ non disney animations and a couple shelves for Criterions.

Criterion have their own shelves because the cases are different, so that mean I don't put them on any of the genres or directors shelves (for example Following is not next to the other Nolan movies, The Game isn't next to Fincher's movies,etc..)

It took me several glances to notice that those two photos are different angles of the room. At first, I thought you had draped a curtain over part of your collection to cleverly disguise it as a window. "Not a bad idea, I should consider some better security for my collection in the event of thieves, too." That thought seriously existed for about twenty seconds.

I organize my collection like I do on this site, by label and then alphabetically, with one alphabetical section for generic studio releases (not a big chunk of my collection, honestly.) Box sets get a little more leeway on where they live but usually by label and on the top shelves.

Lol I never noticed that but it does look like that. I'm pretty anal with my collection. If I lend out movies I have old blank DVD cases I use. My wife was angree because the first time I lent my father in law a movie I did that. But now she doesn't mind because she knows how important they are too me. Although I had anxiety when he borrowed Heat with the slipcover.

It's hard to do it by genre today.
I mean, I was all for it in the old days of the '80's, when video stores and Blockbuster were a thing. "Horror section". "Comedy section". "Drama section"...etc.
Sorting by genre worked because movies back then were only one specific genre (for the most part).

Today, many more movies are mixed genres.

I mean, in my head, that all started with From Dusk till Dawn. I was like, "Where do I store this DVD!? 'Drama'? 'Suspense' (for the 'escape the authorities' first half), or 'Horror' for the vampire second half?"

Even music of the 80's was easy to categorize by genre; Pop. Rock. Metal. Country. Rap...etc
Today, one song has the flavor of two or three of those categories in its four minute span; Pop-hip-hop. Country-rock-pop... etc.

I say alphabetical is still the strongest today.

If you had a record store or video store today, I feel it'd be too challenging for yourself and too confusing to the customers to try to store/find things by genre.

I agree, modern movies or harder to categorize. Get Out, Nighcrawler and Drive are good examples.

I moved away from alphabetical because if I'm deciding what to watch I'll know what type of genre I'm in the mood for. Summertime, I like blockbusters that I saw in the theatre which spans 90's - early 2000's for me. I like this approach because I can pick a movie in minutes. When I had it alphabetically sometimes it would take me so long I didn't feel like watching a movie anymore lol.
