BTW I was gonna separate music and documentaries as well but I decided to just go ahead and alphabetize em all. It just happened to work out that all my TV shows fits on top of my case. If it was not like this id likely have alphabetized everything.

Mine pretty much looks like yours, all together on a black oak shelving system (I think we got at Best Buy -- the huge one that Middle Atlantic makes)...I also do alphabetical, no separating genres, studios, box sets, TV shows, etc. It's all together.

What do you do with your "numerical titles"? Do you keep them at the beginning of your collection, or mixed in as they're "spelled out" (for example, "30 Days of Night" would go under "T" for "Thirty")?

I organize mine the same way I do my CD's, DVD's, XBOX games alphabetically but put trilogies and such together (i.e. - Batman titles all go under B, all Planet of the Apes titles go under P)

What I'm asking is, say it's "1408" -- would you put that under "F" for "FOURTEEN" or in the beginning BEFORE the alphabetic titles begin (with "A")?

Do you have any numerical titles?

My bad, I'm totally not thinking today after a long day at work.

I keep the ones beginning with numbers at the start of my collection. I got alot more on dvd, then i do blu ray.

How do you organize your numerical titles at the beginning of the collection(s) -- in other words, do you go by "size" order, or literal ascending numerical order?

Yep, I always try and leave as much space as possible when I rearrange the shelves. It fills up in no time though lol.

If I get 12 new titles in from Amazon and I'm doing ABC order I might have to move dozens if not hundred of titles to place one or two of them. I might even have to do it over one or two more times by the time I place the last new title. It's just too time consuming.

I find it easier, not to mention more aesthetically pleasing, to give each studio it's own shelf. When it gets filled up I just pick my shelves up, move them one spot over and drop a new shelf in next to the same studio I'm placing. Works for me.

I just put them in order as they go.

Say (500) days of summer would go ahead of 30 days of night.

There are several accepted methods of alphabtization (for English). The one that is aceppted the most places numerical titles up front and goes character by character.

So for example "2001: A Space Oddesy" is before "The 6th Day"

However a title like "(500) Days of Summer" is before 2001 since the initial character is the "(".

Also ignoring articles and apostrophies. Articles ignored even if they are forign. So for example "Das Boot" goes under "B" and "Das" is ignored since it is a german article.

However in the end the rules do not matter. Even most of those state that changes in them can be made based on regional preferences.

So basically choose what works best for you and your ability to find things..

Agreed,

Go with what seems natural for YOU. For instance I group numerical titles in numerical order. I just think it's way easier to find them that way. So 9 comes first, then 12 Monkeys, 28 Days Later, 30 Days of Night, 300, 400 Blows, 500 Days of Summer, 2001 A Space Odyssey, etc. By far the easiest way to find numbered titles.

My DVDs I had to go by genre. It just got too dang big to keep moving everything with each new title, (have over 2,000 DVD titles). The Blu-rays I have alphabetically since the collection started out so small. As you can see it hasn't remained that way. Still have those alphabetically organized for now.

Am debating giving the Criterion collection it's own area but not sure yet.

What about with really "large" numerals -- like, say, the aforementioned "1408" or "2012"...would you put "2012" towards the END of a numerical catalog because it's "Two Thousand Twelve" and such a large number, or would you recognize the "2" in the title, and still put it before, say, "40 Year Old Virgin," "30 Days of Night" etc?

Alphabetically/numerical order. Although I will forsake that depending on the series (example: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade will come before Kingdom of the Crystal Skull even though alphabetically it should be the other way around).
