Heh, that's kind of me in a nutshell. I have degrees in English and Sociology and have taught both. I spend so much time at work (and at home) thinking about serious topics that when I boot up a movie I usually want it to be escapist fare. Though I would say my favorite is largely escapist movies with somewhat subtle political undertones, like say Robocop or Star Trek.

I am not quite as specific. I will give any film a shot that's not a romantic comedy or anime. Now, with that said I will only buy a movie if I intend to watch more repeatedly. I do have soft spots though for good sci-fi thinkers and war films.

Yeah good point. I have definitely watched a ton of more cerebral stuff over the years, I just don't collect them or watch them as often.

found an extra 20 bucks and ordered the Shout version of Audition. Shipped out this morning! Thank goodness for this thread. I was on the fence about this particular title, but there have been dozens that were buried on my amazon wish list that would have been long gone by the time I got around to them if not for the great folks who keep this thread moving & up to date.

It looks like Zombeavers is oop.

I remember it being on shelves for a decent while in BB as a store exclusive title but it's no longer available through them. Not sure if this is a movie that was ever intended for a wider release, though it's still available in a few other countries.

Should've held off and waited to see if Arrow is going to bring their Audition remaster stateside.

The PQ on the Shout Factory disc is rather inferior to Arrow's recent remaster.

I'm not an audiophile, or videophile. I'm sure the shout version will do just fine for me.

Why do you think that people who enjoy "Criterion styled films" are putting on a phony act?

I know you're joking, but I think the difference between DVD & Blu is amazing. Now, getting into different Blu releases of the same movie, not so much. I find it interesting when people put up side by side stills and the like, but I never am that much of a perfectionist that I need to do such a thing at home while watching a movie. I'll only go to 4K if the market forces everyone to do so

I can enjoy a good cerebral movie, what I can't stand is pretentious/pseudo-intellectual trash. Lots of modern independent films try to walk this fine line, and with me they often fail. A failed "cerebral" movie can quickly elevate onto my list of least enjoyable movie watching experiences. In terms of Criterion, I definitely gravitate more towards their "classics" (both foreign and Hollywood) - and less towards their more modern offerings.

Of course I enjoy all types of movies. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a good popcorn flick. But like those that try to be profound or make a statement, I find that some modern "action" directors just push it too far into the absurd. It is just as possible to make an "action" movie that puts you to sleep as it is a failed cerebral movie. I think regardless of whether the movie is cerebral or action driven, modern directors sometimes lack restraint in what they are trying to achieve.

It happens with some folks. For example, there was a recent trending Facebook topic where you answer the top ten albums of your teenage years that left the greatest impression on you at the time. It specifically stated to be honest and not go with a socially acceptable revisionist list. And sure enough, the friends I grew up with and knew their musical tastes inside and out posted a list of "safe" choices that none of us were listening to back then.

But the reason those choices are "socially acceptable revisionism" or whatever is because there are a LOT of people who did enjoy them, even if those specific people didn't, so by that analogy, it still seems like a leap to assume that somebody is only pretending to like Criteriony movies without knowing the specific person's tastes.

Fair enough. I actually think master matters more than format for me, but we all have different eyes and such.

I would never accuse a certain individual of it, but human beings in general definitely get into things sometimes because it makes them feel more accepted, smarter, better, etc. than other people. They can also hate on some things for that same feeling, like Football or Transformers or whatever. If you skim Criterion threads and comment sections around the 'net you'll find plenty of hoity=toity pretentiousness and pink-fingers in the air about it. You'll also find tons of people who genuinely enjoy the bulk of their catalog too. It's a mix.

Just look at the way the Criterion purists sh*t a brick any time the company dares to release a movie more than 10 people have heard of.

If it was financially successful, a certain subset of Criterion fans will think it's the end of the world because Sixteen Candles is taking a spot from the French arthouse version of Gay Cowboys Eating Pudding (without subtitles, of course).

Okay, you're being ridiculous. It might benefit you to, just for a moment, consider the fact that people have different opinions than you.

It would be nice if people could just like what they like without others tripping all over themselves to label them one way or another.
