The issue with Cops is that it was reality TV: it showed real arrests, and sometimes the officers used questionable tactics to subdue black arrestees, who might or might not have been guilty (the show never followed up on which arrests led to convictions). There have been thousands of cop movies and hundreds of cop shows, some still on the air. If TCM pulled New Centurions, they were being ridiculously hypersensitive -- it was a bad call. TCM has a niche audience who are more likely to have heard of Joseph Wambaugh, but how many of consumers of the big streaming services and channels have even heard of him? 5%? Less? Even if TCM did pull it, it'll be back on other platforms if Sony wants them to license it. There are movies on TCM on Demand right now that depict Native Americans as inhuman monsters.

NYPD Blue's on Hulu now, and it stars a racist cop and was controversial at times during its run.

If Peacock wasn't launching soon and the The Office and 30 Rock being two of the big franchises for it, they probably wouldn't have been pulling them.
Agree with all this. With the exception of GWTW and "Cops," the movies and shows we've discussed are comedies using satire and humor in general to criticize racism and blackface in particular. Tina Fey's point -- which hadn't occurred to me -- is that she and other white writers, while making fun of blackface, may have used it more casually for laughs than they should've, that they didn't take the full gravity of its history when using it in a sitcom. 30 Rock ain't no Blazing Saddles when it comes to incisive satire. Great point about the Peacock service, which gives me a little more hope that other non-NBC series won't get the exact same treatment.

I've just been paying attention to what's being pulled as they pull them. It may be racism aimed at the black community for now, but racism isn't just toward the one group so I'd be surprised if the intense scrutiny doesn't expand to other groups as well, which brings me back to the point of my two previous posts: nothing is "safe" because people are offended by different things.
I have reasons to believe this won't be the case, but don't feel like I have the freedom on here to thoroughly explain why. The engine driving this movement is police killings and abuse toward African-Americans. Poor Latino people are similarly vulnerable to this. But I don't see the entertainment industry expanding these actions to Jews, Asians, white gay people or white women much more than they have already, not for some years, anyway. Also there's a pandemic that's getting worse and a huge election in 4 months.

Quote:
the point of my two previous posts: nothing is "safe" because people are offended by different things.
Doesn't matter if everyone's offended by something, it's what the studios think their consumers are offended by that matters. The only way that every movie ever made could be offensive to someone is if you include racists, homophobes, misogynists and other extremely intolerant groups. Big corporations don't care what those people think -- they care about their LGBTQ and African American consumer base, and care about their consumer base that cares about the LGBTQ community and African Americans.

To combine your two previous posts and take them to their logical extreme, every movie and TV show made before mid-2020 will eventually be erased from our culture -- Citizen Kane, The Godfather, films made by women, African-Americans, gay directors; films from Africa, Mexico, Iran etc. etc.

As someone with incredibly hard left political beliefs, the sad thing is is that none of my politically like-minded friends or any of the activists I know could give two shits about Blazing Saddles or "blackface" in Community. We just want the police to stop targeting and killing black people. I understand the concern people have regarding the censorship of art, but I promise you, the people on the ground fighting for social justice really don't care all that much. Sure, you can easily find examples from a few wackos here and there but it's just a distraction - a cherry picked conservative boogeyman designed to discredit the entire ideology by making you afraid that the SJWs are coming to destroy / ruin your entertainment.

Yeah, and it's usually uniformed people completely outside of the minority groups they're trying to "protect", looking for social clout.

Does anyone know if Jack's Back from Scream Factory is OOP? I heard from a friend that it was, and it's been taken off Amazon. It's still for sale on Shout's website though.

Is there any updated info about the status, generally speaking, of Fox catalog titles? I'm seeing a ton on Amazon that are sold only by third party sellers, which is usually a flag that something isn't readily available anymore or is down to stock on hand. Trying to figure out how widely to scoop up Fox titles in anticipation of mass unavailability.

Disney took down the FoxConnect website, where Fox sold their discs directly, the equivalent of Warners' wbshop.com. Without that official company website, it's not easy to tell what is stilll available and what's OOP, but I'm of the opinion that it's safe to assume pretty much all Fox titles are OOP at this point. Some may come back from Disney at some point in the future, but who knows when and how many.

I bought up about thirty old Fox catalog titles as a result over the last year or so. There are some who considered me alarmist for doing this, but many of those titles are going for extortionate rates now, or dried up entirely, so I tend to think I was right.

But if you're asking if there's a way to be 1000% sure, then no, I don't think there is one.

Thanks--I appreciate it. I'm making the same assumption and scooping things up. I regret not pulling the trigger on some Studio Classics titles and I'm trying not to break the bank to avoid the same mistake now. Luckily, tons of titles can still be gotten cheap. Worst comes to worst I can sell them down the road for about what I paid.

Lots of titles will be made available again through Disney. In fact, many are available again in France since a few days, after being pulled down for about 1 month or 2. Only the logo/name of the studio changed. But NOT all titles. Some are still OOP. So there's no way to be 100% sure. It's just a guess.
I would suggest to buy the more obscure/less-known/less appreciated/little titles as those are the most possible ones to end up not being re-pressed for quite some time.
It's what I did, anyway.

Which old Fox titles has Disney reissued in France? I don't think I've seen them reissue any in the US yet.

In the US, a re-release of Rocky Horror Picture Show and a new 4K UHD of Home Alone have been solicited so far.

I'm expecting that most of the Studio Classics will stay OOP, plus most run-of-the-mill catalog titles. I snagged things like The Edge, Never Let Me Go, King of Comedy, The Negotiator, That Thing You Do, Sleeping with the Enemy, etc. (in addition to the Studio Classics). I think if it wasn't a smash, chances that Disney bothers to repress go way down. Not everything is Home Alone or Rocky Horror.

Die Hard 4, Exodus, The day the earth stood still comes to mind as they were OOP last time I checked. And they were made available again a few days ago for 15€ MSRP. There are more.

And a few pre-orders have just been made available for some re-releases in October, as boxsets for: Planet of the apes, Maze runner, Avatar, Titanic, Alien, Sunshine (some of those were OOP for quite some time from Fox).

But then again, those aren't obscure/less-known/less-appreciated titles, so...

Sunshine, that's a good sign to me. That's relatively low profile (not Studio Classics low profile, but compared to their big properties...).
