Default Overheating in new models?

I know the old PS3 models tended to overheat (some of them, at least), so I'm wondering if the 80GB models with the 65 nm chips tend to overheat too? Or do they run pretty cool?

Almost all my friends have the newer models and they all run very quietly. So i say the chances are slim but you can never say never

I have the newer 80gig PS3 and it does get warm after long period of playtime, but that is normal. Mine is quiet compare to my friends older 80gig version, the one that can play PS2 games.

my 60 is pretty noisy after its been on a bit, tempted to trade for a newer model. I've got good space for it, I guess its all the extra hardware inside.

I have a Japanese launch 60GB with Emotion Engine included model. I would think those are most prone to overheating (with the extra chipset included and all), but I've never had any overheating issues.

Of course, it's important to put the console in a well-ventilated area and prolonged use or when the summer heat is kicking in causes the fan run a bit faster, but even then the console doesn't heat up extremely or doesn't produce loud noise (like my 360 does ).

The only issue I have, from a technical point of view, is that the original models are pretty power hungry. I think this is the console with the biggest power consumption I've had to date.

Otherwise, runs smooth as a kitten.

Should it be kept in open air, or can it be inside an entertainment center?

Logically, trapping any electronic device in a closed space is going to shorten it's life.

You always want your electronics to breathe as easily as possible.

i keep mine in (new 80 gig) an entertainment center, but it has, what I believe to be enough room. The fans will kick in after a while but they cool it down enough and turn back off after a while too.

I agree with all points here. I have launch 60GB never gets too hot, fans get a little loud but never too loud, and never anywhere close to the noise my 360 produces (although I think its more the DVD drive than the fans).

Never heard of the overheating problem and I have a launch PS3 60 GB. It runs noisy from time to time but other than that plays like it has from day 1 (GREAT!). But I mean having everything internally will cause the system to get hot...imagine if the shitbox 360 has the internal power brick.....the system would probably give you the red ring of your house burning down.

Huh, launch and runs pretty cool? That's a good sign, thanks

My 20gb overheated and died recently. It was a launch system though so it's had a good run.
Still...$160 to fix so I don't lose my Rock Band 2 data and PS2 support...

Its best to keep it in open air. The manual recommends at least 4 inches clearance for the side and rear vents. Personally I would go for 6

If you have no choice bu to put it in an entertainment center than you can do something like this:http://www.maximumpc.com/article/how...closed_cabinet

if you are more hardcore:
http://www.koolance.com/water-coolin...product_id=557

pair it with some danger den radiator and a good flow pump and your PS3 will be sitting at ambient temps no matter what.

I have one of the loud, backward compatible 80 GB models, but I manage to keep it pretty quite. It's in my ET stand, but I expanded the opening in the back and put a 4" desktop fan like this in there with it, blowing hot air out. Since I started using the fan, my PS3 has never gone into that jet engine mode that's so loud, even while watching regular DVDs. I can only hear this fan running while everything is turned off.

60GB launch model. Haven't had a problem with overheating. I have it set vertically in a fairly open section of my TV stand: fully open in back, about 3" clearance on top. Whenever I notice the cooling fan coming on more than I'd like, I hit the unit with the vaccuum...seems to work pretty well.
