Fox have been talking up the possibility of 4K BD for a good couple of years already, so it makes sense they'd be ready to rumble.

well, I hope we have regular Blurays too of the 4K transfers.
After all, we still (!!!!!!) see dual format editions of Bluray + DVD after all these years!

And that would be the smart thing to do, because that way, they would sell discs to people too who won't rush to upgrade to 4K.
Otherwise, I think the sales will be low..

The studios will release some UBDs out of the gate but I am very pessimistic about its chances overall after that. The real question in my opinion is which disc format the labels and niche releases support in the future. Will UBD be our laserdisc style collector format or will BD remain so?

And yeah, I hope these early UBD releases have BDs with the same transfer on them, because I don't want to buy a first-gen player.

Yeah, I've been hoping they'd do UBD+BD combo packs.

I'm also very pessimistic about the next format, i have the worst feeling about the releases in the new format will fail in a big way.
The sales will not go well and the studios will say that "hard media" is dead.
In the wake of that they will all go on the streaming boat.

This is all but guaranteed for the mainstream. However disc media will survive as a niche product, and the question is which format will be used.

and I don't have any problem with that. In all likelihood it would mean that we see more releases from companies like Olive, Twilight Time, etc. as well as fancy "special edition" releases. Even if we get fewer vanilla catalogue releases of middling older movies.

I should think there'll always be a standard BD alternative to the UHD BD, whether that's an extant disc or a simultaneous UHD BD / BD launch. Yeah, the existing standalone BD may not have the newer transfer, but would you buy a first-gen player just so you could watch the new 4K transfer of, say, Home Alone or Jewel of the Nile downrezzed to 1080p? I wouldn't. Hell, I've got a 4K TV and even I won't be going near UHD BD at launch because my 2014 set isn't compatible with any of the new format's potential benefits aside from the spatial resolution.

This Blu-ray was mentioned before. And now I have the proof.

It's a Sony remaster so 4K was always on the cards, but the piece in the article doesn't reference the movie specifically, it says that Jackson has transferred some of the film's dailies in 4K. I know, I know, why transfer workprint footage at 4K and not the main feature, but that's not explicit confirmation of the latter IMO.

Please add the UK edition of 3 women. According to the review, Criterion might have better PQ (due to the new color scheme?) though.

DVDBeaver has a review up. A lot better than the US disc.

Upcoming in cinemas: "Irrational Man" (Emma Stone) 4K movie according to IMDB. No database link of course nor Blu-ray date. But one to keep an eye on.

Next for the list and screened at Cannes.

For the first time on Blu-ray. In Japan only for now. So I don't see why there should be another master for this Blu-ray?
