Thank you for coming through, Samsung!!

So pumped about this.

My TV will now support HDR10, HDR10+, YouTube HDR, and HLG. Pretty satisfied with that.

That is great news for 2016 owners. I would love to know if other devices can be upgraded to provide HDR10+. The new UBD-M9500 comes to mind and will probably(hopefully) be able to provide it. I am hoping devices like Roku or a new Fire TV can also.

I say this because I mostly use my Roku Ultra for streaming right now because I get better audio than the TV apps and had bad experiences trying to use ARC.

Other devices supporting it won't matter until HDMI 2.1 anyways. For now, it will only be available through streaming, but it's nice to see Amazon jumping on board. Hopefully Netflix follows them.

Time will tell if the industry will adopt it. I hope so, since Dolby is asking me for an arm and a leg to author Dolby Vision content. It would be good for YouTube to support this as well

Amazon is a good start. Hopefully Netflix and YouTube will follow.

I would not get your hopes up. HDR10+ requires HDMI 2.1. So it might be another year before it gets added to external devices. And it is more likely it will only be on new devices with the very slimmest chances of 2017 devices being able to be upgraded.

The marketing on these things is always ridiculous. The reality is that few people could tell the difference between static and dynamic metadata video. We are starting to get diminishing returns.

Hi kid,

got a Sony 65" Z9D and the Oppo 203. Predict the Oppo DV update gets in before the Sony DV. Just a hunch...

HDMI 2.0b - not sure if it happens, or is concurrent with the DV firmware.

Zmarty,

care to guess what "conventional" equals in specific terms? Maybe SDR Rec 709?? Sure doubt that left side is HDR10(only, or 'not plus'). ps: I understand this is Sammy's marketing hpye, not yours.

Not much of a goal to beat if it is just SDR.

I know they said it requires HDMI 2.1 for HDR10+ on discs but if not needed for streaming then shouldn't the M9500 be able to provide it for its streaming apps? Roku is a streaming device and Amazon could use this to market a new Fire TV box without the need for 2.1 no?

No. HDMI 2.1 is required for it to pass from any external device. So if the M9500 had the Amazon app with HDR10+, the only way it could pass it to a TV is via HDMI 2.1. Same goes for any external device be it Roku or Fire. HDMI has nothing to do with discs.

Smart move. By getting out ahead of the start of NAB, (like for example with TVLogic (http://www.panoramaaudiovisual.com/e...oled-monitors/) Samsung can acquire a larger/longer piece of the news cycle bringing awareness to their offering than they normally would by announcing it during NAB when it would be buried among a plethora of other company announcements.

It should encourage more attendees to find the Easter egg and give it a taste.

Believe me, the facility wide 12 month licensing agreement…..

is even costlier.

A post earlier in this thread contained a quote from the Technical Director for HDMI LA said that HDMI 2.1 can be achieved via firmware update as long as the HDMI chipset is upgradeable.

HDMI.org also has this to say:

Quote:
Dynamic HDR

Q: Does this Dynamic HDR require the new 48G Cable?

A: No, but it will be necessary to enable 8K video with HDR

Q: Does the specification support the various HDR solutions?

A: Yes it supports various static and dynamic HDR solutions in the market

Q: Is this accessible via a firmware upgrade?

A: Manufacturers will be implementing this in various ways
http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_2_1/index.aspx

So HDR10+ doesn't need the 48Gbps and it can be achievable via firmware upgrade, depending manufacturer.

I thought I had them shots the wrong way around because the SDR converted HDR shot looks FAR better to me. Does it clip a bit of detail in the darker areas in that shot? Yes, bearing in mind that this is an SDR-converted shot so there's no telling what's been done to bring it back to a fixed SDR output.

But you get more highlight detail (look in the top left) and the colour is so much better on Spidey's suit, the red & blue are far richer and more deeply saturated without looking overblown. You also get a shitload more detail thanks to the 4K finish, just look at Spidey's suit or the perforations on his 'eye'.

No contest: HDR wins.

That comparison matches what I see on my Sony in HDR>SDR. Richer color that doesn't (usually) look garish, darker blacks that crush a little but not (usually) enough to cause concern. There will be random scenes though, like say Snape and Bellatrix marching through the woods at night at the end of Half-Blood Prince, that look too crushed to be okay.
