Does the NEC EMM3 chip support BD?

Sure, though do have you heard if the Panasonic UniPhier is capable of HD PiP decoding? Also are there different versions of the chip? It is mentioned as being used in the Panasonic DMP-BD30 but I also have read press releases about it being capable of HD video encoding.

Their chip was designed to be a single-chip solution for BD recorders. Their player just happens to also use that chip even though it overkill for the job.

Yes, and personally speaking I think it is very likely it will be updated to BD-Live sometime in 2008.

Any Blu-ray player will play the movie itself but in terms of supporting extra features the Panasonic DMP-BD30 is a good choice. It is capable of PiP decoding and with a SDHC card slot it can support SD cards from 256 MB to 16 GB. The only thing to keep in mind is that it isn't capable of internet extras which would require a BD-Live player.

This brings up a question for myself. I have a sony BDP-S300 that I have been able to do firmware updates via a disc from Sony to enhance BD-Java capabilities but I assume that I would not be able to update the profile aspect of the player??

Its obviously 1.0 so is it not possible to update the profile??

The decoding chip used in the BDP-S300 is not capable of dual video decoding so the player can't be updated to Bonus View.
