![]() ![]() Blu-ray still has 3 updates (profiles) due out before Blu-ray even completes its format specs. The next update (profile 1.1) is due out in November but the one after that (profile 2.0) has no date yet and will mandate hardware changes such as network connectivity and hardware storage differences. Currently no manufacturer will claim that any player (including the PS3) will be compatible with profile 2.0 once it is released. I would suggest either waiting till a manufactuerer at least officially makes this gurantee or purchase with the understanding that the player may not be fully functional a year from now. I'd speculate and guess the PS3 has the best chance of being compatible but I'm surprised Sony isnt claiming and guranteeing this now if it was true. How big of an issue is this later in the future?? How acurate is this...I like to see it explain from someone here, Im always hearing how big AVS favors HD-DVD..Thx http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=868226 |

I know it will be 1.1 compatible. And the mandate for that is October, not November for all players. That will include the PiP function. Which I will probably rarely/never use.
The PS3 should be 2.0 capable, since it has 60GB hard drive and network capabilities, but I'm not sure about the rest of the specs it includes. There are threads on here about BD2.0 Do a search you'll come up with all kinds of good stuff. Yes, AVS is a little HD-DVD biased, but its okay...we all know who's winning!!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc A little straight-forward info on the profiles for ya!!! profile 2.0 or bd live is OPITIONAL and it says that any [player with a ethernet port must have a gig of local storage and can donwload stuff the next profile is called bd-a (audio) that for players that only play audio |

there are 4 profiles for BD
BD-audio BD-video 1.0 BD-video 1.1 BD-live these are different types of machines with different feature sets. They are not updates but choices to consumers. Why would someone that wants a device to connect to their central audio system buy a BD-live player that can decode video and connect to the internet and play internet games when all he wants is the audio from a disk. BD-audio is an audio only player, the BD disk could have videos with the music, but the player will only output the audio BD-video 1.0 is the only profile that has an expiration date, it was created to allow manufacturers to release players when the technology was not there to support BD-video 1.1 BD-video 1.1 is the same as 1.0 but the player must be able to decode two video streams where the sum of both<=40mbps BD-live adds a network connection and other stuff that are meant for on line interactivity. |

![]() Actually, speaking of winning, it would be interesting to see a breakdown of revenue by each of the studios. Seems Universal being only 1 of 3 supporting HD DVD might bring in as much revenue as many of those supporting Blu-ray. While blu-ray has more sales, there are more studios competing for those sales with roughly the same number of titles.. And I know I will be very upset if there are ever any blu-ray titles my PS3 can't play. |

Don't worry! All of today's Blu-ray player will be able to play all future Blu-ray titles. However, future titles that includes PiP would require a profile 1.1 or 2.0 player for the PiP feature to work. Preferable (IMO), a profile 1.0 player will not even show to the user that the title contains a PiP feature. And same for internet connectivity, will only work for profile 2.0 players, and should preferable not be visible for profile 1.0 and 1.1 players.

Grip24:
It is fact not opinion that Blu-rays specs are incomplete and are scheduled to change in the future, including mandatory hardware changes! Please dont base your answer on anyones comments but use the information given as a starting point to do your own research. Below is copied from Wikipedia with a link Blu-Ray Profiles - Wikipedia LINK Profiles The BD-ROM specification defines four profiles of Blu-ray players. All video-based profiles are required to have a full implementation of BD-J. Profile 1.0 This is the basic profile that all current Blu-ray players (as of April 2007) are based on. (What about all the $1,000 players sold between June 2006 and April 2007?) Players based on this profile are only required to have 64 KB of application data area storage, which is typically used for bookmarks and other preference storage. Most (not all) players have more than the minimum required 64 KB.[citation needed] After October 31, 2007, this profile will be superseded by profile 1.1 as the new minimum profile. Profile 1.1 (mandatory November 2007) What is typically referred to as "Profile 1.1" (but is more formally known as "Final Standard Profile") adds a secondary video decoder (typically used for picture in picture), secondary audio (typically used for interactive audio and commentary) and capability of supporting a minimum of 256 MB of local storage (for storing audio/video and title updates). Compliance with this profile will be mandatory for player models introduced to the market after October 31, 2007,[1] but existing products will be unaffected. As of July 24, 2007, only the Denon DVD-3800BDCI and DVD-2500BTCI have been announced as supporting this feature.[2] Some profile 1.0 players may be upgradeable via firmware update to profile 1.1 if they have the appropriate hardware, but no manufacturer has announced any such upgrade. When software authored with interactive features dependent on Profile 1.1 hardware capabilities are played on profile 1.0 players some features may not be available or may offer limited capability. Profile 1.0 players will still be able to play the main feature of the disc, however. Profile 2.0 (BD-Live) Profile 2, also known as BD-Live, adds network connectivity to the list of mandatory functions and increases mandatory local storage capability to 1 GB. No players have been announced as compatible with this profile. Players of earlier profiles will still be able to play the main feature of the disc, however. Profile 3.0 (audio only) Profile 3 is meant for an audio-only player and does not require video decoding or BD-J. |
