Well, this isn't true anymore. You go to your local Cineplex one week and they are showing 10 different films. Go the next week and there might be 2-3 left, replaced by others to bring in more $$$$$. That business model will obviously trickle down to home entertainment. That is not "caused" by smartphone viewing, it's driven by shareholders who pull all the strings. As far as I know the people in power are NOT 18-25, and they will never listen to the elite if the masses don't care, that the cash cow there. Also, it really isn't only the kids who use phones and tablets. In my friends and family the users of these devices are usually the parents, not everyone out there can afford to give their kids an iPad. And let's be honest, we, as adults and parents are the ones who have fueled the adoption of smart devices, don't know many 17 and younger who can afford those, so it's always a gift (in a vast majority anyways). But most of the younger crowd does have a smartphone, so they just use it, as we all do. But if you ask them if they would rather see it in the theaters they will mostly all say "Sure, yes, god, how else". But teens, like it's always been, don't want to fit in the family entertainment time but would rather do their own thing, on their own stuff, I know I did. But if we look at the music industry as an example, quality went out the door way back with mp3. But now in 2014, vinyl is making a comeback, hi res audio is one the rise, etc. Kids aren't dumb, actually they are way more aware of things than we ever were at their age, but we, as adults, have sold them ease 1st, the rest later. They took it all in. But in no way can I think they will continuously be more & more asking for bad. We screwed them up with fast and cheap, they bought in and now we have to teach them all over on why quality is important. In short, if there is blame to give, do aim at the right people, the content providers and the adults that have given them cheap. |

You are at that point in life where you think the younger generation are wrong and your generation was 'the good old days'. It is called being a cranky old man.

Cinema should not be treated as a cheap disposable form of media watched on crappy smartphones. I will take that opinion to the grave. It just cheapens the medium and no amount of 'down with the kids' crap is going to convince me otherwise. Last edited by Steedeel; 04-09-2014 at 06:48 PM. |

Two, though I'd rather watch movie on my 60 inch TV, I do at times watch a movie on my iPad as I'm commuting on the tran. Nothing wrong with that. Which is why the Game of Thrones Blu-ray sets also come with digital copies. Could you try just once not to insult people. You're very disrespectful. I'm not asking if you ever saw a guy watching an episode of Castle on the train. I'm asking if you personally know any of these kids who supposedly do all their movie watching on smartphones. Quote:
http://www.mpaa.org/wp-content/uploa...ics-Report.pdf In 2012 people between the ages of 12-24 made up 18% of the population but accounted for almost a third (31%) of all tickets sold in the US and Canada. The 40 and over crowd? The ones with the real passion for movies? We made up 48% of the population and we accounted for 34% of ticket sales. There were more than twice as many of us movie lovers and yet we barely outbought the smartphone crowd. We might love movies more but these kids today, they're kicking our asses when it comes to actually supporting them. |

But don't you think it odd that the smartphone crowd is twice as likely to see films in all their cinematic splendor? |

Guys, what many fail to realize is that we, the blu-ray.com crowd are the weird ones. How many people do you know who own hundreds of BDs outside of this place? In your surroundings I'm sure you are the "nuts". Collectors like us make up such a tiny fraction of the market that imo we don't make much waves in the big picture.
More money in selling 10 million copies to the general public time and again (who cares if they are not the same every time) than all to 0.05%. Our views are not the norm, in any age group. I know some young people (i.e. under 30) who buy much more than all the others in my age group around me. And please (sorry steed) stop blaming the young generation. Their entertainment dollar is now called upon for much more than we had. Gaming didn't exist then for example. And they didn't create all this, we did (we being the generation that calls the shot), they just bought into it. But we also use it as I doubt the only ones streaming Netflix are all under 30 and the only ones that use personal devices for entertainment are the young ones (I know for one I use my phone when not at home). It's the industry that has changed, evolved with the technology. And to be honest I would rather know they watch movies on their phones (while buying into the theater concept highly) than not caring about movies at all, that would be danger. Also, I don't know too many under 30 who can afford to put down a few Ks on HT. In that age group your kids take a big chunk, your house has to be paid for and at 30 you usually are not at top level salaries yet. They are not the enemy, they are the future, and whether you agree or not, it's where the industry will concentrate. Seriously, how many others like us do you guys know? Some seem to think that because we spend tons we are entitled to be considered. If collectors played a huge part of the income, trust me they would cater, and as far as I know, we haven't been left out yet. The world changed, adapted and as the older gen, we have to adapt, not the other way around. Sucks getting old doesn't it? ![]() |

I do enjoy watching blu-ray films at home -- but I'd go to theaters far more than I do if there was more variety being offered. |
