You're pretty much saying the same thing I am: namely that humans are a reminder to the engineers of the emptiness of technological creation.

Those cave paintings were made tens of thousands of years before the engineers' decided to wipe out humanity. There is no reason to think they were using the moon as a "military experiment planet" until just before the engineers themselves succumbed to their own creation. Doubtful that would take even 5 years.

There is nothing in the movie that even remotely hints at that. The myth of Prometheus itself--the namesake of the film--involves a demigod that fully believes in the promise of humanity. This STRONGLY suggests a benign motive for giving humans the gift of life and the knowledge to determine where they came from.

Makes no sense given the lack of any such motive hinted in the film. The engineers show no sign of wars being waged.

One thing you will not learn from repeated viewings is the myth of prometheus, which is really an allegory for the engineers. The statement made by Shaw when confronted by the fact that the engineers made us: "who made them" strongly suggests a higher/divine being that created the engineers just as the titans were lesser beings than the Gods in the myth of Prometheus.

Thanks for your interpretations! What's your theory for why they were directing them to that planet rather than their home planet, unless you believe that was their home planet? or alternatively whether you think it was an invitation at all.

There was nothing in the film to show that the engineers had extended an invitation. That was Shaw and Hollaway's interpretation of the cave paintings. But I would say that pointing to one's place of origin is just that: showing where you came from. That's what Shaw and Hollaway were trying to discover, regardless of whether they were invited.

I think this is a story that needed a lot more time to tell.
Certainly not all the flaws/plot holes/open ends could simply be blamed on a lack of direction and shitty writing.
The way the story unfolds has a lot to do with keeping the movie short, which clearly it shouldn't have been. I envision that whoever it was that made the decision to edit the story/movie to keep it within 2 hours, knowing full well a story like this needs damn near 4 hours must have had an agenda similar to Meredith Vickers.
I remembered seeing all kinds of cool preview footage that showed Peter Wayland at TED, and David as a product being unwrapped and activated - yet somehow none of this ended up in the film. Pretty disappointing and makes me wonder what else might have been left out.

The Visual Effects Oscar was essentially decided months ago. The big thing to remember is that if a film in that category is also nominated for Best Picture, that film typically wins the award. The voters are extremely predictable in this regard.

No, they should be at TRU in a couple weeks, at least ...so far they're arriving at a few retailers online. I got mine from Amazon, where a couple sellers have them. I didn't want to wait much longer...... so it's a bit more pricey now, but the TRU price is definitely the best.

Yeah, who's to say (other than Shaw & Holloway) that the Engineer isn't pointing to his place of origin and saying to the primitives, "We rule - you drool! So whatever you do, don't go there! EVER! It would be...bad."

Saw it yesterday, was pretty good even if I heard a lot of people seem to be disapointed by it.

Granted I am not a big expert on the Alien series. I saw the first four movies maybe a few times each but never seen the AvsP nor the books or comics. So I had a few questions about the story maybe that would clear out a few things.

At the start of the movie,
[Show spoiler]the alien mix his DNA to Earth or implant it on Earht? Was that something new or was it mention before in books?

I not sure I understood right but they mention that those tall Alien were just doing genetic testing on a grand scale,
[Show spoiler]something went wrong but I am unclear what made her (Naomie Rapace) believe they wanted to destroy Earth? I may have miss something somewhere?

Again not being an expert here but
[Show spoiler]the actual Alien as we know them in the movies are a result of a mix between some genetic materials and the tall Alien DNA?

In any case the movie was not bad, will look forward to see the sequel
