I enjoy 'Pulp Fiction' for much, much more than just dialogue, and I think 'Brown' is an example of Tarantino going with the popular feedback that his "witty" dialogue is what carries his movies, while for me that is not the case; so we have a movie with the same type of dialogue, but not nearly as entertaining of a show. I think he milks a one-note formula of stylized dialogue and pastiche, without much regard to the overall quality of the product... that is why I find his movies to be very "hit-and-miss", I've only liked three of them (Fiction, Kill Bill, and to a lesser extent, Reservoir Dogs).
Point taken. What's your favorite KB? Mine is vol 2..... for the dialogue (LOL) and the soundtrack.

I know what you mean about "dialogue and pastiche" - he really knows how to make those scenes last. What was interesting for me about Jackie Brown is that it was much more of a drama film over Pulp Fiction (a film which for me seemed to be QT celebrating going to the movies), and for sure, it doesn't seem like a "Tarantino film" per se either, so it was something different.

You know, I really enjoyed Death Proof when I first saw it, but on repeat viewings I can't stand it for the most part because of exactly what you complained about in Jackie Brown; it's a slow film which builds up to one key moment, and a lot of that build up was just talk-talk-talk-talk-talk.

Jackie Brown, for me anyway, had a lot more depth to it than many of his other films. The characters were less caricatures a la Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill (or most certainly Inglourious Basterds), and seemed a lot more interesting, if less witty and circumstantially entertaining.

I totally understand that you didn't enjoy it, but to say that someone won't enjoy anything if they didn't like it once the first time is a little bit close-minded.

Volume 1 is sooooo much better. The cinematography, soundtrack, and fight sequences are stunning.

I totally agree with what you say about volume one, but I always come out of vol 2 with a better sense that I've witnessed a real, beginning to end movie. The cinematography, soundtrack, and fight sequences are stunning in volume two also!

Kill Bill is one single movie to me... neither episode is complete without the other.

...and CJ, as far as the repeat viewing thing, I think either you just misunderstood me, or I wasn't clear enough, or whatever. I was trying to dispute the ridiculous assertion that if you didn't like 'Brown', then it must only be because you just haven't watched it enough times.

I think both films are great - personally I like Jackie Brown a little more overall.

A little off-topic here, but regarding second viewings of movies - I've found that sometimes a film gets better on its second viewing, but usually it is either the same as I originally thought, or worse, kinda like "WTF was I thinking the first time?" I'm a little curious as to how second viewings play out with other people.

I just watched Devil with a Blue Dress a second time, and although I still enjoyed it, it wasn't quite as great as I remembered it.

You're right, I just re-read what you said without a 3am daze, and forgive me, I understand entirely where you're coming from now.

It must be George Lucas's fault.

I like Jackie Brown better than Pulp Fiction, too. I think Jackie Brown is the more mature film, and it has some depth to the characters that Pulp Fiction lacks. Pulp Fiction seems more shallow to me, like a campy parody of the type of films Tarantino loves too much. Tarantino also indulges his penchant for sadism in that film. Worse, he makes it part of a sick joke.
