My order of two titles from Twilight Time arrived today. This was my maiden order direct from Twilight Time and was ordered during the sale. It shipped on April 18th and arrived ten days later. For shipping to Canada, that's crazy fast. Shipments from SAE usually take about three weeks. My only dislike, the movies were in a huge padded envelope which seemed to have lots of room for bouncing around, but alas there was no damage whatsoever. The customs sticker included a value of $5 for each title. For any Canadian customers out there, I would not hesitate to order from them.

I order a lot of clothes from the UK and movies from the USA, and so far I've been lucky not to have had paid customs charges (and now that I've said that, my shirts from ASOS Marketplace will arrive with a customs charge to be paid ![]() |

I just finished watching my Twilight Time Blu-ray of Birdman of Alcatraz, and I am glad that I finally took the time to get this one out of my still-unwatched stack.
Birdman of Alcatraz is loosely based on the true story of Robert Stroud, who kept birds in his cell in Leavenworth and became a highly respected ornithologist, but was not allowed to keep the birds when he was transferred to Alcatraz. The legendary Burt Lancaster shines in the title role, and gives a fascinating portrayal as a violent man who gradually becomes a noted intellectual. Karl Malden (Where the Sidewalk Ends, On the Waterfront) is excellent as a warden whose career parallels Stroud's imprisonment, Neville Brand (Riot in Cell Block 11, Stalag 17) delivers a great role as a guard who eventually befriends Stroud, and Thelma Ritter (Rear Window, All About Eve) is multi-layered as Stroud's mother. Director John Frankenheimer (The Manchurian Candidate, Seconds) helms a lengthy, but well-paced film here as an early effort. I saw bits and pieces of Birdman of Alcatraz during my childhood, and I'm glad that I've finally, at long last, seen in full this iconic story about the importance of individuality over conformity. I'm now listening to the commentary track as I post online, and I'm really enjoying the debates about the movie's accuracy regarding Robert Stroud. The Blu-ray is impressive in terms of both audio and video presentations, and Kirgo's booklet packs a lot of quality info into four pages. |

I don't think that revealing the Lancaster character as being gay would have made him sympathetic to the audiences of the day.

From what a friend who worked at Hecht Hill Lancaster told me, Lancaster would probably been okay with it and had a couple of projects he could never get off the ground in the 70s where he would have played gay characters (though that wasn't the focus of the films), but it would have been an incredibly hard sell to a studio at the time. Even in the 70s at the height of his fame Paul Newman was never able to find a studio that would back him playing a gay coach who falls in love with the male athlete he's training in The Front Runner, and that was based on a book that sold ten million copies.
