I thought it looked horribly over matted. I have a HUGE collection of Blu-ray's and the only title that comes close to that letterbox is Ben-Hur. Bedazzled (1968) was just a normal Panavision film and looks insane at that ratio.

[Show spoiler] Then you are wrong. 2.69 is not the intended aspect ratio of "The Great Escape". |

The only thing I know about The Great Escape is an early DVD release had a lot more picture info compared to later releases.

Just because there is more info, it doesn't mean that it was intended to be seen by audiences. In the '98 DVD, there are shots where composition is off and interior scenes where you can see the edge of the set or stage crew.

You are right. The Great Escape was a very odd case. Where they had a lot of additional picture information on the side that wasn't actually supposed to be seen. I can't think of too many other films like that. Very strange. Usually when there is picture info that is not supposed to be seen it is on the top or bottom and not on the side.

That really is a LOT of additional picture info. I kind of think the 1998 version looks nice, but we now know that we are not supposed to see that picture information, so just pretend you don't see it. Just please throw away the 1998 DVD and forget that you saw anything.

For "Bedazzled" 2.35 is probably correct, but I would never use IMDB as a reference for that. They get the OAR wrong for dozens of films. Best reference for that (in my opinion) is the American Widescreen Museum.

I can't believe all the dogpiling negativity I am reading about The Pink Panther films. Not all are great, the Blake Edwards' series went a few films too many, but Sellers was a comic genius, Burt Kwouk and Herbert Lom portrayed two of the best supporting characters ever, and these movies totally rock.
I waited years for them to reach Blu-ray. Year after year I waited, and then one day they were announced, the world was suddenly a glorious place, and I developed an overwhelming desire to start speaking with an outlandish French accent that I struggle to control to this day. This isn't TT related, but I will just leave this as a reminder to the misguided souls who cast doubt on the brilliance of these films that their opinions are simply wrong. ![]() Oh, and my Screen Archives order of all four February titles shipped today. I'm really not sure what the deal is with Bedazzled. The Twilight Time Blu-ray is 2.35:1, but the picture does seem like it's a bit vertically stretched (in particular, Eleanor Bron's face looks too skinny). Is that just how the film is intended to look?
