The sales model was based on limited edition at a fixed price and I think the sales undermined that. So instead of people preordering at full price when they came out, most people just waited for a sale. They should have just tweaked the LE model along the way to adjust for the declining physical market, either by reducing the quantity to be available (for example from 3000 to 2000), the price (for example from $30 to $25), or a combination of both. But the fixed price, no sales ever, LE model inspired the mindset of prioritizing TT's releases (and I always had a long list of wants, but TT's were near the top because of this).

OMG, just thinking about a death cage match between directors has my head spinning. Too funny!!

A few years ago, I started a thread in the Movies sub-forum asking people which four directors they would memorialize on a “Movie Director Mount Rushmore.”

I would have to look my own up again, but I’m pretty sure that I listed Fritz Lang, John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, and Akira Kurosawa.

I'd put my money on Fleischer - he was small and wiry and easy to underestimate in close quarters combat.

Yeah I wasn't saying that those are the 4 greatest directors to ever live; rather, they're probably the 4 I would choose when it came to being masters of various genres.

Gotcha. I actually wish that the most highly esteemed directors had branched out even more. I would love to have seen an actual honest-to-goodness supernatural horror film directed by Billy Wilder, for example.

That's true or, given Ford's adroitness with the camera and preoccupation with tradition, a biting film noir on corruption within the police force.

I'll put my money on John Milius. I don't think anyone wants to get into the Octagon with that bear of a man!

Milius is actually a loveable teddy bear of a guy behind all that bravado, but sadly that near-fatal stroke a few years ago took a lot out of him, though he's made a lot of progress since then.

The Milius documentary was fascinating. Really need to revisit that one again. Good to know about the progress!

I don't know if this was a deliberate choice of words, but in case you (or many others) are not aware, John Milius was the creative director for the original UFC and actually invented "the Octagon" based on the fighting pit from Conan the Barbarian.

That would pretty much be my top 4 too. Might have to make a couple smaller mountains for guys like Hawks, Capra, Wilder, Curtiz, Wyler, Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, Melville and others which were hard to keep out of that top tier since there just is not just enough spots. For example, I hold guys like Curtiz in super high regard and the level of disrespect for him among some today is disappointing. To emphasize on what I mean lately someone felt this need to bring up that Curtiz wasn't great in a conversation where I was mentioning that Curtiz is probably the best director many have never heard of, but saying that Hal Wallis was the true pioneer who deserved all the credit.

An ironic joke to make, since Billy Wilder literally learned how to direct a film by following Howard Hawks around.

It was not deliberate, but I seem to remember that it was mentioned in the Milius documentary. So, maybe it was subliminal

No irony intended, as I was unaware of that. Nice little nugget of info, however

My earliest experience with a Fleischer film was with me having no idea of who he was before or even after seeing the film. This is in the early '60s: My mom liked shopping in the downtown department stores in Washington D.C. She didn't drive so getting there involved several different busses and transfers. My treat for going along this particular time was a afternoon showing of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at one of the fancy downtown theaters. We got there and noticed it was double billed with something called The Vikings. Must be another kids film, right? Well, it was the first film being shown when we got there and by the time it was over I thought it was the greatest film my young eyes had ever seen. My immediate request was "Can we watch it again?" Somehow my mom said ok and that Disney film took forever to finish before I could watch that neat film with the loppings and the bird attacks, etc. My mom became a saint in my eyes that afternoon for indulging me in seeing a film (twice) that I'm sure she didn't want to watch once. To this day this is still one of my treasured theater experiences and for sure the oddest double bill I ever attended.
