Very impressive. Hard to believe there are now almost 200 TT releases.

I used to buy almost all the TT releases every month but I've really cut back, having become quite disillusioned by their double-dipping policy. I don't have a problem with them re-releasing sold-out titles but I do object to them including extras and improved transfers. I want the best edition available and for the price of TT's product, I expect to get that the first time round.

It'd be more respectful if they'd at least offer a discount on upgrades to the people who bought the original disc but I know that won't happen: They want to make as much money as possible, which is understandable and may well subsidise less commercial releases. But loyalty's a two-way street and these days, I'm more likely to wait for sales or buy cheaper versions from other countries. You reap what you sow, as they say.

That's about how many I have. Have a bunch of dups though, from getting signed copies I already owned. Have to sell them some day.

Different distributors place a different meaning or values on the term "limited edition" I guess. Here's what a German distributor thinks of it.

Quote:
The philosophy: As we expect our customers to pay lots of hard earned money for our products, we would like to at least “reward” them with the knowledge that our limitation is genuine (we will not manufacture more, even if we have miscalculated and there is still demand) and that the prices will not drop. Meaning, even years later you will be able to sell our special editions for the same price you bought it or very likely even way more. They usually don’t loose their value. In order to keep it that way, we “dismantle” re-releases. For example, the Universal titles that we now release on Blu-rays were previously available on DVD. More expensive, but also featured tons of bonus (for example, an exclusice commentary by Mick Garris for MONOLITH MONSTER). This bonus is not included on the Blu-rays in order to NOT bring the value of the initial product down. Because, one thing for sure: People really get pissed when they bought a high priced product and later an upgraded version is released for a cheaper price.

It's the inclusion of extras that I most resent, especially when one suspects the same materials could have been included on the first release. That very much strikes me as a strategy to encourage double-dipping, rather than simply to allow access to those who missed out the first time round.

It's common practice by the major studios, of course, but I expect a little more integrity from a boutique label, I guess. Especially at such a premium price.

I would think TT gets the best transfer they can from the studios, and after 3-4years TT has developed into quite a little company which may give them more leverage when dealing with the studios. Plus TT didn't think there would be re-releases when they first started.

Also studios seeing a title has sold out may be more inclined to do a new transfer knowing TT will license it again and maybe even sellout again. Also if a title is re-released and a new transfer/extras exist wouldn't most people cry out if they weren't utilized?

Don't know if anyone noticed...but TT actually charged my CC immediately this time.

In the past months, their commitment was to charge as it shipped...makes me wonder why they changed this policy.

Yeah, I mean those are the predictable responses - some valid, some not - and funnily enough they usually come from people who didn't buy the first releases.

A new transfer is about the best excuse for a re-release because I understand they're at the mercy of the studios. But could they really not have included the in-house commentary on THE BIG HEAT on the first release, for example? Or licensed the extras for the first release of MYSTERIOUS ISLAND? And is including these new extras worth it when it means that you now have three thousand vaguely resentful customers who bought the lesser version? Is that a good policy in the long-term?

I'd like to think it isn't; but then again, I still usually buy at least one a month so I'm under no illusions about how much of a damn TT gives about my opinion.

Drop a line to support@twilighttimemovies.com and ask if there's a policy shift or if this was simply an anomaly.

Duggie, we do care about your opinion, and take a note of most reasonable requests and complaints. We agree with you that the subject of reissues is a problematic area, which is why when we have fulfilled our commitments to MGM/UA this year, who essentially mandated that we put out again 4 of their titles, we will effectively discontinue "double-dipping"in the future.
Wth regard to THE BIG HEAT, MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, and their new extras, when we first started licensing from Sony extras were precluded, but now, as our relationship with them has solidified, that position has softened and we took the opportunity to do something different. With JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH at Fox, we were offered a fantastic new 4k transfer.

The 4 MGM/UA reissues this year will all be essentially the same as the previous releases, so little need to "double-dip." We are aiming these toward the people that missed out first time around and have written to us asking for a second chance, and as stated earlier, that will be the end of the reissue program - in the 5 short years that TT has been in business, the home video world has changed exponentially. And, as a result, studios, and boutique labels will constantly have to realign with the new market forces, and be adaptable to any variant. It is our desire to keep on giving what home theater enthusiasts want, and in order to do that decisions have to be made that will always be unpopular with a segment of the community, but hopefully beneficial to the majority. If we don't, we'll have to pick up our chips and find another game.

Thank you Twilight Time! Your honest response is most sincerely appreciated, and I am glad "Hawaii" is selling well. I figured that you agonized over the "Hawaii" decision, and in the end, I am happy it was released. As a huge movie buff I truly treasure the films you bring to us and will always support your efforts. You have my trust, and I will immediately order the films I mentioned as being reluctant to purchase until reviewed. I also hope my "MORE HARRYHAUSEN" and other specific film suggestions bear fruit.

Thanks again!

How about the The Egyptian? Any plans for another Blu-ray reissue?

Edit: To answer this question...No, not at the moment.

I emailed TT directly and here is the response.

If you just scroll back up about 3 posts, you will see we commented on reissues and suggested that *no* more will be coming after this year's 4 MGM/UA titles.

Out of curiousity, could someone say what those 4 MGM/UA titles might be?
