You'd think something hipper like ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS would be an exception, especially after Bowie's passing, but no word on Low Quantity yet (mind you, it was only released last year). Such a visual movie (I saw it in a cinema), it was on my list of most wanted for quite some time so I snapped it up.

A telling example of this can be found in the review for Fox's box office blockbuster, Jesse James. My knowledge of this film is extensive because it was filmed here in my hometown back in the late summer of 1938, the year my mother was born. In the fabled year of its release, 1939, it was the fifth highest-grossing film of the year behind Gone With the Wind, Babes in Arms, Drums Along the Mohawk, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, bringing in more money than such classics as The Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Dark Victory, Stagecoach, Ninotchka, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, etc., etc. It was such a tremendous hit that Fox re-released it theatrically in 1945 and again in 1951. I think one of the reasons that the film was so popular is because it was breathtakingly beautiful. Growing up, I saw original silver nitrate prints of the film projected on the big screen on a yearly basis, and I can attest that the color was incredible, rich and vibrant, even riotous. It popped. The blu-ray is the best the film has ever looked on home video, and I've owned it on every format ... Beta, VHS, Super VHS, LaserDisc, DVD, "remastered" DVD, and now blu-ray ... but I can tell you that what you see today is but a pale, bland imitation of what the film looked like originally. I've been told that the film could be upgraded in terms of picture quality using newer technology, but that such an investment is unthinkable given the current cost. I'll be very interested to see what Heaven Can Wait looks like when the 4k remaster debuts on blu-ray. A 1943 nominee for the Best Picture Oscar, the current Criterion DVD is a marked improvement over the VHS and LaserDisc releases, but again, it's still a disappointment in terms of the color palette and overall picture clarity (several scenes are marred by ghosting); those needle-point titles are supposed to be red and blue on a white background, not a background that shifts between ivory and pale yellow on a frame-by-frame basis. Here's hoping ...! |

Hi,
I purchasedtons of TT blu-rays over the years and I am in need of money. I'm only considering selling ones that have the most value. Do you guy's know what TT movies have the most resale value at this time? Thanks! Last edited by leeza; 02-13-2016 at 02:04 AM. |

I'd venture to guess any of the OOP Editions...especially now that TT says there will only be 4 more reissues of OOP releases

I would check the completed sales on eBay. I've seen some sales go as high as $45-$50 and those weren't even OOP. I think there are a lot of people who've never heard of Twilight Time or Screen Archives.

I am REALLY behind in my TT purchases and need to make a few big orders. I have to make a habit of following this thread more closely and jump on the upcoming promotions.

It's definitely time for a bonus. I've got an itchy trigger finger on this shopping cart at SAE.

Summer Lovers is not a movie I was dying for, so you'll get no competition from me. Good luck.

I just checked SO DEADLY SO PERVERSE, the guide to giallo films from 1963 to 1973, for their opinion of LA BAMBOLA DI SATANA... it's really quite funny:
"Casapinta's directorial filmography appears to begin and end with this film. This is probably just as well. Casapinta's approach is generally limited to bolting down the camera and zooming in and out, with only the most basic of coverage for dialogue scenes and a little wobbly moving camera action to generate "mood." With its over-lit interiors, unconvincing day-for-night exteriors, bad acting, choppy editing and appalling score, La bambola di Satana is a strong contender for the contender for the worst giallo of the 1960s." La Bambola di Satana should fit in well with my collection as a low standard bar by which Blood and Black Lace, A Bay of Blood, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin, and others can be judged. |
