Funny, i don't think it's at all dated but more relevant than ever.
Leave out the white girl and black man, and bring in their place 2 gays (leave the rest the same) and you have yourself a contemporary film.
this is what i was thinking when i was watching it.
The central themes are always the same. it's the wrapping that changes. You've got to see the bigger picture here. it's not a story about interracial marriage, but about love and marriage between 2 people (whoever they may be), whose love is in contrast with most of society's beliefs.

It was remade as Guess Who in 2005, with Bernie Mac, Ashton Kutcher, and Zoe Saldana.

First Men in the Moon is another "don't miss out on this release or you'll regret it" bd. Spectacular 4k scan and a terrific movie to boot. If TT gets to put out 4k uhd discs I hope it's their Harryhausens. Every one of them has a high quality scan.

Please note the word "some". That means "not all". Here's hoping your missed title is one of them.
Seems like their first, direct, sale has been quite a hit since 21 titles are no longer available through TT since the start of the sale.

For those looking for suggestions during the current Twilight Time sale (or any other time):

Undoubtedly one of the most joyous films TT has released. If you are a fan of musicals, this one is top shelf. If you are not a fan of musicals, get this anyway and be amazed. The performances are worked into the plot as show numbers put on by the entertainers; in fact, the plot is pretty simple and serves to string a series of musical, dance, and full blown stage extravaganzas together from the likes of the incomparable Lena Horne, Bill Robinson (aka the legendary Mr. Bojangles), Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Ada Brown, the Nicholas Brothers, and many more. Stormy Weather is a historic film, often considered one of the two best examples of cinema entertainments featuring a cast entirely made up of African-Americans (the other, according to several articles I have read, is Cabin in the Sky, also featuring Lena Horne).

I have been a fan of Lena Horne for many years. She is one of the top female performers of all time and features prominently in my album/CD collection. The film's title comes from a 1933 song, performed by Horne near the end of the brisk 78 minute run-time. Although the song Stormy Weather has been recorded by other famous singers including Billie Holiday, Ethel Waters, Dinah Washington, and even Frank Sinatra, it is Horne's rendition that immediately comes to mind when I think of it.

While Horne's stage presence captured on film is worth the price of admission alone, Stormy Weather showcases so much talent from its cast it boggles the mind. There is the good-natured and wonderful role portrayed by Bill Robinson, who entertains us with athletic shoe shuffling grace and makes us completely unaware that in 1943 he was in his 60s! The presence of Cab Calloway is another highlight. For those who, like me, only became aware of this legendary performer from his appearance in The Blues Brothers (1980), his energetic zoot-suited showman persona with his floppy bangs flying as he sings and struts to the sounds of his famous band is as mesmerizing here as it was in John Landis's film homage to the original greats of blues and jazz.

And then, just as the kinetic Calloway has brought beads of sweat to the foreheads of his audience, the energy on display is ramped up to cardiac arrest levels with the introduction of the incredible Nicholas Brothers. Words cannot describe what has to be one of the greatest dance sequences ever captured on film. Their routine is jaw dropping.

Picked up ten of the handful that I was missing from the sale: The Purple Rose of Cairo, A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy, Shadows and Fog, Born Free, Stormy Weather, Broken Lance, Sense and Sensibility, Black Widow, Kings Go Forth and The Bride Wore Black. Shipping was quick and well packed in a box. I do occasionally skip a release (other region quicker or lower mainly) but have kept up fairly complete and between sales, promos and rather obsessively scouring for needed titles on eBay, have rarely paid full retail. This label, along with a few others (incl. Kino Classics, Arrow, Code Red and Scorpion) piques my collecting interests with a huge percentage of their releases.

Definitely agree with you on this one. It's one I plan to order this coming Friday for my second batch of sale titles, assuming that TT still has copies in stock by then.

I'd love Cabin in the Sky, too. Too bad it's languishing in Warner's catalog, along with two other major studio film featuring an African-American cast: 1929's Hallelujah and 1936's The Green Pastures. At least all three are available from Warner on DVD (I recommend them highly).

Thanks oildude, for your terrific write up of Stormy Weather. This had been on my unwatched pile for a while and your great review incited me to give it a viewing last night. I'd seen clips of it before, but never the whole thing. There are a lot of great numbers, including the title song by Lena Horne, Fats Waller singing "Ain't Misbehavin'", and Cab Calloway, but the highlight is the Nicholas Brothers. No wonder they are the last number in the film -- there was no way to top that performance. Amazing!

For anyone interested in learning more about the Nicholas Brothers, there is this A&E documentary from the several years back.
