I've not seen ONE review of Chato's Land anywhere. Even if it's a relatively obscure film, you'd think that SOMEBODY would have something to say about it at this point.

Great Owl posted about it on the last page, but as far as "professional" reviews go, yeah :P DVD Talk tends to review most of their stuff eventually.

I would feel safe purchasing a BD recommended by The Great Owl; in fact, I added Chato's Land to my Wish List based on his review on the previous page. He may not be a '"professional"' reviewer on this site but being ranked in popularity at 5th out of over 8,000 reviewers says a lot!

Yeah, I'm looking for professional reviews.

I love Chato's Land but am really anxious to see how the Blu stacks up against the $hitty MGM DVD. I'm sure quite favorably, but I like to read reviews before I buy.

I'm with you, i'd be nice if the review happened before the sale was over.

Received Follow That Dream on Friday from the sale, and watched it Saturday, however the disc was defective and froze about a third of the way into the film. Contacted with them regarding a return this morning so we'll see how this goes.

I'm not a "professional" either but I could try and look at it tonight and post some thoughts to go along with Owl's. In a lot of cases forum members are a lot more exacting than the pro reviews. Also I would bet you significant cash it looks roughly on par with every other MGM catalog dump Twilight Time and Kino have put out.

Can anybody vouch for Night of the Generals (quality of the actual film, and quality of the PQ on the Twilight Time disc)?

I blind bought it when it was released. I liked it. It takes some unexpected turns and has a few surprises. The film plays out as part police procedural and part horror film set during the Second World War. The killer is a German general, but which one? There are three suspects, but it is pretty clear early on who it is.
[Show spoiler]Peter O'Toole
portrays one of the scariest characters ever captured on film. A deadly soldier, cold, charming when he chooses to be, barely in control of his rage, and a psychotic sex murderer. An officer (but not much of a gentleman) who controls the destinies of his subordinates makes him even more terrifying. Even though we suspect the identity of the killer, we are held on edge as the investigation into the murders unspools and the killer's urges are held in check until something sets them off and he strikes again. The fact he is a general during wartime allows him to more easily cover his tracks as he moves between assignments and countries.

I have no complaints regarding the PQ and recall it being very good.

I just bit and ordered The Fabulous Baker Boys. Blind buy, but I do love me some Pfeiffer and Bridges so... yeah. It looks good.

My assessment of the film itself would be about halfway between the official site review and oildude's. The site review is a tad harsh, particularly with respect to Maurice Jarre's score. There's nothing terrible about the film at all, it's good but isn't really as exciting or as intriguing as its unique premise would suggest. If you're interested, I would say definitely get it on sale but maybe think twice about paying full price for it.

Well I don't want to denigrate a respected member whom I like, but I always get the sense that The Great Owl has never met a Blu-ray he didn't like. That and he didn't/doesn't go into sordid detail regarding the A/V quality. I already like the film, at this stage I'm more concerned about its HD presentation.

Is there any advantage of owning the original The Big Heat release, aside from that it's rarer? Thinking about selling it and buying the new version, for the special features. Plus I kinda like the new cover art more.

You'd lose the cachet of being a premier edition owner, and getting to rub that in the faces of we plebeians that missed out.

I could see you saying that. I love the dude but he isn't the pickiest person when it comes to video, and I think he would say that himself. I'm not as exacting as Geoff or Mike but I do alright, I'll load up the flick here in a minute.

Have you ever seen him post a negative review?

Chato's Land looks pretty rough on a quick, cursory inspection. Tons of soft shots and rough footage, more than I expected. Lot of poorly resolved grain that turns into noise in the bright blue skies. A decent amount of print damage but nothing too distracting, makes it feel more like film IMO. Some very well detailed shots scattered around, especially the campfire scene around the middle.

Overall expect a lower-end MGM catalog dump transfer, maybe a little worst than 10 to Midnight got but hard to say as of now. I'm sure it still handily beats the DVD, but it ain't gonna blow your socks off either. This is just a cursory look though, I'll correct it when I watch the whole film.

Much appreciated. I think it's among Bronson's best efforts from the 70s. Though I still can't believe that
[Show spoiler]they had him opposite Jack Palance and failed to get a scene with the two of them.

Yeah, reminds me of Heat almost. Looking forward to watching this one this week, hopefully.
