I just finished watching my recently acquired copy of 10 Rillington Place, and was blown away by the film, and by the quality of Twilight Time's transfer. This was not the first time I had seen the movie, although it took me a while to realize it; it seems that I had watched it within the past couple of years when TCM screened it as part of a Richard Attenborough memorial tribute. TCM's print was, to be kind, decidedly lackluster, and the movie failed to make much of an impression on me; the Twilight Time blu-ray, on the other hand, was dazzling, and the improved picture and audio quality allowed me to fully appreciate the cinematography, the score, and the fine performances of Attenborough, Judy Geeson, and John Hurt, who stole every scene in which he appeared.
Kudos to Twilight Time on the superb job they did with this underappreciated title; even the theatrical trailer sparkled. This is an example of why we love blu-ray, and I am pleased to recommend it highly. |

Was interested in picking up Rapture based on the effusive praise in this thread, but reviews peg Eureka! as having the superior presentation.

I'm aware that SAE will begin taking preorders tomorrow for the August slate of titles (HARDCORE, THEATRE OF BLOOD, TONY ROME, et al). When will the Twilight Time site begin to accept preorders? I've never ordered directly from TT, so I'm unfamiliar with their policies.

I just pre-ordered...
Theatre of Blood Hardcore Tony Rome/Lady in Cement Good times! I was on the fence about Hardcore, but I ultimately decided to give in after reading the late Roger Ebert's review. |

"Hardcore" is the ultimate Paul Schrader movie. His older movies, both in direction and writing, are very uncompromising. His "Rolling Thunder" script, for example, which is not exactly a lighthearted romp as is, had to be doctored to make it less bleak. And "Rolling Thunder" is a very bleak film as is.

John Flynn directed. Schrader wrote the original script, and then Heywood Gould came on and doctored the script a bit. But its definitely a Schrader movie in terms of its tone. Flynn did a nice job of translating his vision to screen though

I don't know, there has been a lot of love for it in these boards and forums, and on TT's page, too, since it was announced. It doesn't SEEM like one that would sell out, but maybe it will.
I just pre-ordered it. It is a GREAT film. Very gritty, very 70s. George C. Scott, as usual, is phenomenal. His famous "Turn it Off!" scene is now legendary. It's been used for parody so much, I hope people can still take it seriously. It's actually a heartbreaking scene. Season Hubley later would play a hooker again, in "Vice Squad". Peter Boyle shows up,too. Just awesome. Goes pretty damn dark in places, too (Snuff, anyone?). And Schrader's use of Gospel songs in the soundtrack is oh-so-haunting... I also just pre-ordered "The Most Beautiful Wife", which is an Italian film of the they-don't make-em-like-they-used-to-anymore variety.... |
