Yup, Ride The High Country is a brilliant western, TCM showed a great looking HD transfer a short time ago, so Warner must have done the HD work. They also showed a nice looking HD Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid (unfortunately it was the Seydor cut). I enjoyed Major Dundee when I saw it at the cinema all those years ago, but I don't rate it too much now, too talky & a bit of a mess at times.

I'm going to take a break from the western genre after tonight, though, since I purposely dedicated the past month to watching westerns in my still-unwatched Blu-ray stack. After I watch Bite the Bullet tonight, I'll be caught up with all of my westerns. I've had a great movie month, though, because these westerns have been a blast.
It's not to your discredit that you haven't seen Ride the High Country yet ... but you will want to catch it sooner rather than later. It's a perfect little cinematic gem, one that was added to the National Film Registry in 1992. In a historical context, many critics and film scholars have argued that it was the apex of the "Classic American Western" genre. That may be true enough, but personally, I appreciate the film for its transcendent performances by a once-in-a-lifetime cast (Joel McCrea, Randolph Scott in his last film role, Mariette Hartley making a glowing debut, R. G. Armstrong, Edgar Buchanan, James Drury, Warren Oates, John Anderson, and stalwart character actors Percy Helton and Byron Foulger); Peckinpah's sure-handed direction; Lucien Ballard's stunning widescreen cinematography; and George Bassman's soaring, majestic and exquisitely orchestrated musical score.

Bassman's score, which was released on a limited edition, currently out-of-print CD by FSM, is the main reason that Ride the High Country would make the ideal Twilight Time release. It truly is a thing of beauty that alternately gives me goose-flesh and brings tears to my eyes.

Knowing your tastes, Great Owl, I can't help but believe that you will love and appreciate the film as much as I do. I look forward to learning of your reaction when you finally do see it.

Why is Bite the Bullet $5 more than most other TT titles?

I bought Bite the Bullet during the big sale a few weeks ago, and it was the same price ($19.95) as the other sale titles.

I don't know why it's $34.95 right now.

Some of the early Sony titles (Bite the Bullet, Picnic, et. al.) were released at higher price points.

I bought the film during one of the earlier sales at $24.95. Obviously, this time around they lowered the sale price, probably to try and get more sold.

And oddly enough, The Sound and the Fury is priced at $19.95 even as we speak ...

Ride The High Country is Warner (a sixties MGM film), so it'll never be a Twilight Time release.

My copies of APRIL LOVE and MISS SADIE THOMPSON are out for delivery.

This might be a good time to give a hint to Canadians who may not be aware of this fact but when Asendia says "End of Electronic Tracking", that's not true.

The "End of Electronic Tracking" message appears when the package crosses the border and the tracking is not longer updated on the Asendia site. But, after a day or two, you can plug that tracking number into the Canada Post website and it will pick up tracking in Canada. I tracked my SAE package from Montreal to Winnipeg on Canada Post...after Asendia stopped tracking it.

Correct. But I never suggested that it would. I simply said that it would be an ideal Twilight Time release.

Yes, I realized this myself only quite recently.

I watched MAJOR DUNDEE on dvd a few weeks ago to see if I should get the TT version.
RG Armstrong was a classmate of Andy Griffith's at the University of North Carolina. I best remember him as Arnold Schwarzenegger's former commanding officer in PREDATOR and appearing with Robert Redford in THE TWILIGHT ZONE episode "Nothing in the Dark".
He also has a small role in Warren Beatty's HEAVEN CAN WAIT----which I'm still waiting for the Blu-ray version.

He was a pretty solid character actor. He also appeared in Peckinpah's Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, and co-starred with Arnie in Stay Hungry.

As baheidstu said, a handful of the earliest Sony BD releases were priced at $34.95. The specific titles in question were:

Mysterious Island
Picnic
Pal Joey
Bite the Bullet
Bell, Book, and Candle

Major Dundee was also priced at $34.95, but that was because it was a 2-disc set.

What are the chances? Wishful thinking, slight possibility or could actually happen lol
Well. TT would have to cut a deal with Paramount first.

Dumb question: if I order one in stock item and one pre-order (out 8/16) when do they ship & when do they bill? I assume both ship/bill after 8/16, correct? Or not? Anyone?

If you are paying via credit card, that is correct. It is possible though that if they get the pre-order item in stock early they will ship the parcel to you prior to the 16th.

Is that something that could happen? Is Paramount good to work with or do they keep their catalog titles for themselves?

Hope this isn't a question thats been asked before. Looked back a few pages and didn't see any Paramount mentions lol

Thanks.

In response to a question posed to TT on Facebook about whether or not they have "The Seven-Ups":

We do, just holding off for the 4k transfer that's in progress now.

Great news. Especially as I just got an order update email from Amazon UK saying they are "still trying to obtain" the Region B release I ordered on July 13 (which was shown as available at that time). They don't seem optimistic, and even suggest I may want to cancel and buy from another vendor.

Fantastic film. Happy to now wait for the TT release.

With Miss Sadie Thompson being the number one seller at SAE for about a month, I wonder if The Mad Magician will be in the next batch (November and December) of releases by TT.
