That's a terrific selection of films. Not a bad one in the list, IMO.

"The Disappearance" is one of my favorite releases from TT. They have the two cuts of the film and an insightful interview from director Stuart Cooper. Although, I believe the newer shortened cut on there is closer to Cooper's original vision than the one that originally played theatrically. Very strange, but fascinating film. |

Yeah, I was excited for the moment I saw The Mad Magician, but scrolling down the email I found this was all I wanted in the batch. Then, here I found it is not even included in the promo... Definite pass this time.

Actually there are 11 titles in this bundle not included in the last one, so we felt it was sufficiently "refreshed..." Additionally many of the 26 titles are now very low quantity so it will be the last go-round for a lot of them...

Some good choices there. Zulu is a definite classic and Bite the Bullet is a personal favourite.

(1) Buy the 6 I need from the sale list at SAE, and pick one I already have to keep around as a duplicate (or use to trade with, or sell it to a local store). At worst, I can figure it as paying $11.50 each for the 6 I need, and getting the dupe for free. (2) Wait a while to see if any titles are added to the sale list (I recall that during the previous 7-fo-70 sale, SAE added some more titles) that I might need, to get to 7. This runs the risk of ones I want selling out before I get them. (3) Buy the three $9.95 titles from TT, and hope that four more that I need are added to the SAE list (which would be a long shot). I'm leaning towards (1), but I'll have to give it some thought (for budgetary reasons, I can't order anything until tomorrow anyway). |

A big thank you to TT for finally releasing Comes A Horseman and for trying to manage expectations (and to that end lowering the price).
Yeah, the master is clearly an older one. But the only thing that really stuck out at me was one or two hiccups in some scenes with fast movement and lots of detail (when they are chasing after errant steers running through the woods for example), and in some faint instability along sharp straight edges (like the edges of the house seen from a distance). Things like this contributed to a slight sense of a more 'electronic' look on occasion. As far as the level of dirt and print damage- I grew up in a small town with a two screen theater that only got films in months after they had opened. They usually arrived with a decent amount of wear and tear accumulated from their first runs. Seeing the condition of this print really conjured up that old long lost analog theater going feeling. Sure, a pristine print would have been much appreciated- but the level of damage here really isn't all that bad- it's only when seen in relation to most other studio catalog releases which are usually much cleaner, but hardly ever perfect themselves. On the plus side, I didn't notice any deleterious effects of DNR, nor was the film a victim of revisionist color grading. Either of which would have been just as, if not more unfortunate than the issues it does have IMO. For the most part the image was highly detailed and the impressively lensed locations came through loud and clear. As one of the few fans of the film who was eagerly awaiting it's release on Bd, I came away very happy all in all. Having expectations lowered, definitely helped though. |

If you have 6 you want, I would say just pick a blind buy that you think you'd like. Even with these perennial low sellers, you'll be able to get $10 back on the secondary market if you don't like it. And you might find a gem -- they certainly have a few. |
